This paper proposes a novel Convolutional Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (CKAN) model for Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) in an IoT environment. The CKAN model is developed by replacing the Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) layers with Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs) layers inside the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) architecture. The KANs give high performance compared to the MLPs layers with fewer parameters. The performance of the proposed CKAN model has been evaluated against other well-known Deep Learning (DL) models like CNN, recurrent neural networks (RNN), and Autoencoder. The evaluation process has been carried out with three benchmark datasets: NSL_KDD, which is treated as a standard IDS dataset; CICIoT2023; TONIoT, which are IoT IDS datasets. The results point out the superiority of the CKAN model over other DL models for both binary and multi-classification tasks as per the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. The proposed CKAN model achieved accuracies of 98.71%, 99.22%, and 99.93% for binary classification, and 99.2%, 98.84%, and 93.3% for multi-classification on the NSL_KDD, CICIoT2023, and TONIoT datasets, respectively. The CKAN model gives better performance metrics with a smaller number of parameters compared to other DL models. In this way, our findings point out that KANs are promising for being a substitute for MLPs.
Intrusion detection has been of prime concern in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment due to the rapid increase in cyber threats. Majority of traditional intrusion detection systems (IDSs) rely on centralized models, raising significant privacy concerns. Federated learning (FL) offers a decentralized alternative; however, many existing FL-based IDS frameworks suffer from poor performance due to suboptimal model architectures and ineffective hyperparameter selection. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel trust-centric FL framework based on the tab transformer (TTF) model for IDS. We enhance the Tab model through an optimization process, utilizing a hyperparameter tuning algorithm inspired by the nature-based electric eel foraging optimization (EEFO) algorithm. The goal of the developed framework is to improve the detection of IDS without using centralized data to preserve privacy. Whereas it enhances the processing and detection capability of huge amounts of data generated from IoT devices. Our framework is tested on three IoT datasets: N-BaIoT, UNSW-NB15, and CICIoT2023 to ensure the model's performance. Experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly exceeds traditional methods in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall. The results presented in this study confirm the effectiveness and superior performance of the proposed FL-based IDS framework.

Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges in communication, social interactions, and repetitive behaviors. The heterogeneity of symptoms across individuals complicates diagnosis. Neuroimaging techniques, particularly resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI), have shown potential for identifying neural signatures of ASD, though challenges such as high dimensionality, noise, and small sample sizes hinder their clinical application. Methods: This study proposes a novel approach for ASD detection utilizing deep learning and advanced feature selection techniques. A hybrid model combining Stacked Sparse Denoising Autoencoder (SSDAE) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) is employed to extract relevant features from rs-fMRI data in the ABIDE I dataset, which was preprocessed using the CPAC pipeline. Feature selection is enhanced through an optimized Hiking Optimization Algorithm (HOA) that integrates DynamicOpposites Learning (DOL) and Double Attractors to improve convergence toward the optimal subset of features. Results: The proposed model is evaluated using multiple ASD datasets. The performance metrics include an average accuracy of 0.735, sensitivity of 0.765, and specificity of 0.752, surpassing the results of existing state-of-the-art methods.Discussion: The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid deep learning approach for ASD detection. The enhanced feature selection process, coupled with the hybrid model, addresses limitations in current neuroimaging analyses and offers a promising direction for more accurate and clinically applicable ASD detection models.
Extensive growth in the number of Internet Of Things (IoT) devices has significantly increased susceptibility to various cyber-attacks and hence emphasized the need for robust intrusion detection systems (IDS) for ensuring IoT network security. While deep learning (DL) methodologies have proven effective in the application of IDS, their success greatly depends on the availability of large datasets and significant computational resources during training. To overcome the limitations associated with this dependence on large datasets and significant computational capacity for training, the current work suggests employing the transfer learning (TL) mechanism by combining Swin Transformers with long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Utilizing the beneficial properties of Swin Transformers in learning hierarchically structured data combined with the proficiency of LSTM in processing sequential dependencies, the hybrid model generates pre-trained weights in the first phase. These pre-trained weights are further transferred into another instance of the new model for subsequent fine-tuning. Experiments are carried out on several benchmarking datasets, namely NSL-KDD, ToN-IoT, BoTIoT, MQTTIoT, and CICIoT2023, which include both binary and multi-class classification scenarios. The proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art DL models, for example, the Autoencoders, ResNets, CNN, RNN, and LSTM models, and achieved an average of 98.97% in accuracy, of 98.97% in precision, of 99.02% in recall, of 98.97% in F1 score, across all datasets. Experimental results establish that the hybrid approach achieves better detection accuracy and better performance measures compared to the latest state-of-the-art methods, thus proving itself effective in increasing the scalability and adaptability of IDS in IoT.
