The fracture toughness of shale is a basic parameter that can provide effective theoretical support for wellbore stability and hydraulic fracturing of a shale reservoir. Due to the composition and microstructure, there are many problems in evaluating the mechanical properties of shale in a macroscopic test. In this paper, the composition and pore distribution of shale were studied by X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the pore structure. The setting of experimental parameters and the selection of the indenter were discussed. Micro-indentation technique was proposed and applied to fracture toughness analysis of shale. The results show that Berkovich indenter is more suitable for shale indentation test than Vickers indenter. Fracture toughness of shale indentation is obviously affected by surface roughness and indentation position. Fracture toughness of shale decreases slightly with the increase of the indentation load. The energy analysis result presents that the effect of cracking on the ratio of total/unloading work is minimal when there is no significant stripping on the shale surface. Compared with the experimental method, energy methods can obtain all the analysis parameters from a single indentation test. The results of comparative analysis with macroscopic experiments display that micro-indentation test can effectively predict the macroscopic fracture toughness of shale.

Energy storage fracturing technology is a technical means by which oil displacement fluid is injected into the reservoir before the traditional hydraulic fracturing and subsequent implement fracturing. It provides a good solution for developing tight oil reservoirs. The efficiency of this technology significantly depends on the injection performance of the fracturing fluid, and the ability of its liquid phase to penetrate the formation. According to the needs of energy storage fracturing, four surfactants were selected. Then, based on the performance evaluation of the four surfactants, the compositions of two surfactant systems were determined. The performance of slickwater fracturing fluids for energy storage hydraulic fracturing was evaluated. The mechanism of tight oil displacement in energy storage hydraulic fracturing was analyzed. The results showed that the compositions of oil–displacement agents 1 and 2 for energy storage fracturing were successfully acquired. The performance of oil–displacement agent 2 was slightly better than that of oil–displacement agent 1 at a concentration of 0.25 wt%. The defined composition of the fracturing fluid met requirements for energy storage hydraulic fracturing. It was demonstrated that the tight oil in small pores was effectively substituted by the fracturing fluid, and subsequently aggregated in the large pores. The tight oil displacement ratio increased with an increase in temperature, and the difference among the tight oil displacement ratios of tight sandstone cores increased with increases in their permeability differences.

Shale reservoirs are the hot issue in unconventional resources. The key to the development of shale reservoirs lies in the complex fractures, which are the only path for fluid to migrate from the matrix to the wellbore in shale reservoirs. Therefore, the characteristics of shale fracture surface morphology directly affect fluid migration in shale reservoirs. However, there are few reports about the characteristics of shale fracture surface morphology as the parallel plate model was commonly used to characterize the fracture, neglecting its surface morphology characteristics and leading to great deviation. Thus, description methods were introduced to characterize shale fracture surface morphology with the aim to provide a foundation for the development of shale resources. Three shale samples were fractured by the Brazilian test, and the height distribution of the fracture surface was captured by a three-dimensional profilometer. Then, three-dimensional fracture surface morphology was regarded as a set of two-dimensional profiles, which converted three-dimensional information into two-dimensional data. Roughness, joint roughness coefficient, fractal dimension, tortuosity, and dip angle were employed to characterize shale fracture surface morphology, and their calculation methods were also, respectively, proposed. It was found that roughness, joint roughness coefficient, fractal dimension, tortuosity, and dip angle were all directional, and they varied greatly along with different directions. Roughness, joint roughness coefficient, fractal dimension, tortuosity, absolute dip angle, and overall trend dip angle were among 0.0834–0.2427 mm, 2.5715–10.9368, 2.1000–2.1364, 1.0732–1.1879, 17.7498°–24.5941°, and −3.7223°–13.3042°, respectively. Joint roughness coefficient, fractal dimension, tortuosity, and dip angle were all positively correlated with roughness.

The technology of radial-well-assisted hydraulic fracturing is applied in the stimulation of low-permeability hydrocarbon reservoirs where commercial production cannot be achieved by the conventional fracturing method. Here, a study on the reservoir stimulation effect and the fracture propagation pattern of radial-well-assisted deflagration fracturing was carried out. Based on smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH), rock mechanics theory, and finite element theory, a numerical model of radial-well-assisted deflagration fracturing was established by integrating the JWL state equation. Research on the effects of the deflagration position, radial well azimuth and horizontal principal stress difference on the fracture propagation was carried out. The results show that the deflagration position, radial well azimuth and horizontal principal stress difference have significant effects on the fracture area in deflagration fracturing. The closer distance from the deflagration position is, the larger the radial well azimuth and the smaller the horizontal stress difference are, leading to a larger fracture area, which is conducive to reservoir stimulation. During fracturing, both shear fractures and tensile fractures are formed. The formation and conversion of shear fractures and tensile fractures are related to the deflagration position, radial well azimuth, horizontal principal stress difference, etc.

To evaluate how field-applied imbibition agents affect oil recovery and pore-scale oil mobilization in Chang 8 tight sandstone, natural cores from Longdong, Ordos Basin, were tested using CNI-A, CQH-1, and EOS-3. Surface tension, oil–water interfacial tension, and contact angle were measured at different concentrations. Solutions with a mass fraction of 0.3% were selected for 144 h macroscopic imbibition tests and 96 h nuclear magnetic resonance measurements at 18 MPa. All three agents reduced surface and oil–water interfacial tension and altered core wettability. At a mass fraction of 0.3%, EOS-3 achieved the lowest oil–water interfacial tension (0.03 mN/m), whereas CQH-1 produced the highest average recovery after 144 h (32.9%), compared with 21.9% for CNI-A and 20.6% for EOS-3. Nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation-time distributions indicated oil mobilization across different pore populations and supported the stronger sustained performance of CQH-1. This contrast shows that interfacial tension alone cannot determine imbibition performance. In the field trial, Well X treated with CQH-1 showed a 28.4% increase in average daily oil production during the first month and a 23.1% increase in cumulative oil production over 90 days. Imbibition performance reflects the combined effects of wettability alteration, capillary driving force, interfacial resistance, and pore-throat structure. This study provides an experimental basis for selecting imbibition agents for Chang 8 tight sandstone reservoirs in Longdong.
