Based on the importance of energy saving in terms of reducing the carbon impact and global warming problems, smart street lighting systems have been proposed in the past few years with different specifications. These systems include sensors for controlling the light intensity and connectivity for recording weather conditions and diagnosing lamp failure remotely. This paper discusses many published research studies regarding smart street lighting systems, providing a comparison between these systems which emphasizes the limitations of each one of them. Current and future trends are highlighted.

This paper presents two new designs of MIMO dual band coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed-slot antennas operating in the 5G frequency band (28 and 38 GHz). The first antenna is an XX MIMO antenna and the second antenna is an XY MIMO antenna. Simulated results for the S-parameters are presented for the two antennas using HFSS. Measured results are also presented for the return loss and gain with both results showing good agreement. The current distribution, group delay, envelope correlation coefficients (ECC), and diversity gain, are also presented for both antennas. The two antennas are fabricated on a substrate having dielectric constant εr = 10.7 and substrate thickness 0.635 mm. The size of the antenna is 4.4 mm x 4.1 mm x 0.635 mm.

Quality and properties of microwave circuits depend on all the circuit components. One of these components is the substrate. The process of substrate material selection is a decision-making problem that involves multicriteria with objectives that are diverse and conflicting. The aim of this work was to select the most suitable substrate material type to be used in antennas in the microwave frequency range that gives best performance and reliability of the substrate. For this purpose, a model was built to ease the decision-making that includes hierarchical alternatives and criteria. The substrate material type options considered were limited to fiberglass-reinforced epoxy laminates (FR4 εr = 4.8), aluminium (III) oxide (alumina εr = 9.6), gallium arsenide III–V compound (GaAs εr = 12.8) and PTFE composites reinforced with glass microfibers (Duroid εr = 2.2–2.3). To assist in building the model and making decisions, the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used. The decision-making process revealed that alumina substrate material type was the most suitable choice for the antennas in the microwave frequency range that yields best performance and reliability. In addition, both the size of the circuit and the loss tangent of the substrates were found to be the most contributing subfactors in the antenna circuit specifications criterion. Experimental assessments were conducted utilising The Expert Choice™ software. The judgments were tested and found to be precise, consistent and justifiable, and the marginal inconsistency values were found to be very narrow. A sensitivity analysis was also presented to demonstrate the confidence in the drawn conclusions.

Two new designs of dual frequency coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed double folded slot antennas are presented. An important advantage of these antennas is that they are self-matched to the feeding CPW without the need for external matching circuit. This reduces the antenna size and simplifies its design. To verify the designs, the return loss and radiation patterns are measured and compared to those obtained using available commercial software with good agreement

A lumped‐element circuit is proposed to model a coplanar waveguide (CPW) interdigital capacitor (IDC). Closed‐form expressions suitable for CAD purposes are given for each element in the circuit. The obtained results for the series capacitance are in good agreement with those available in the literature. In addition, the scattering parameters obtained from the circuit model are compared with those obtained using the full‐wave method of moments (MoM) and good agreement is obtained. Moreover, a multilayer feed‐forward artificial neural network (ANN) is developed to model the capacitance of the CPW IDC. It is shown that the developed ANN has successfully learned the required task of evaluating the capacitance of the IDC. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2005.
