Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce a co-simulation method to study the ground maneuvers of aircraft anti-skid braking and steering. Design/methodology/approach – A virtual prototype of aircraft is established in the multibody system dynamics software MSC.ADAMS/Aircraft. The anti-skid braking control model, which adopts the multi-threshold PID control method with a slip-velocity-controlled, pressure-bias-modulated (PBM) system, is established in MATLAB/Simulink. EASY5 is used to establish the hydraulic system of nose wheel steering. The ADAMS model is connected to block diagrams of the anti-skid braking control model in MATLAB/Simulink, and is also connected to the block diagrams of nose wheel steering system model in EASY5, so that the ground maneuvers of aircraft anti-skid braking and steering are simulated separately. Findings – Results are presented to investigate the performance of anti-skid braking system in aircraft anti-skid simulation. In aircraft steering simulation, the influence of two important parameters on the forces acting on the tires is discussed in detail, and the safe area to prevent aircraft sideslip is obtained. Originality/value – This paper presents an advanced method to study the ground maneuvers of aircraft anti-skid braking and steering, and establishes an integrated aircraft model of airframe, landing gear, steering system, and anti-skid braking system to investigate the interaction of each subsystem via simulation.

A dynamic model is proposed and validated to analyze the landing performance of a vertical landing reusable launch vehicle (RLV) with a novel oleo-honeycomb two-stage damper. Based on this model and design requirements, seven critical landing conditions are found as a foundation of the following multiobjective and multiconstraint optimization for oleo-honeycomb damper. In order to overcome the time-consuming and variable coupling problem of the optimization, a combinatorial optimization method is proposed and verified with collaborative optimization (CO) combined with an archive-based micro-genetic algorithm (AMGA). Meanwhile, relaxation factors and the radial basis function (RBF) model are employed to improve the computational accuracy and efficiency. After obtaining the optimal solution, the influences of the landing strut friction coefficient and ground friction coefficient on the soft-landing process are analyzed. The results show that the combinatorial optimization method is feasible and efficient, and the selection of honeycomb crushing force and hydraulic damper’s parameters affect and restrict each other. The oleo-honeycomb damper has some advantages over traditional dampers and two factors of initial landing conditions have different influences on touchdown stability, impact acceleration, and nozzle ground clearance.

Landing gear system is a key part of the implementation of reusable vertical takeoff and vertical landing launch vehicle, where its buffing performance is directly related to the vehicle whether it can land safely or stably. According to the reusable launch vehicle general scheme, outrigger landing legs are designed, and the hydraulic absorber is used for the landing gear system. Meanwhile, a scaling principle prototype of landing gear system is developed, and the landing impact test is carried out. A dynamic simulation model of the landing vehicle has been set up, researching the influence of parameters, such as the horizontal velocity, initial inclination, surface friction coefficient, and pitch angular velocity on the landing performance. Four kinds of extreme conditions are identified, and dynamic response characteristics of landing system under each extreme condition are conducted. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The buffing performance of the vehicle meets the design requirements, which provides a reference for the design of landing gear system of the vehicle.

Based on the technical platform of electrically actuated nose wheel steering systems, a new type of damping shimmy reduction technology is developed to break through the limitations of traditional hydraulic damping shimmy reduction methods, and an electrically actuated nose wheel steering structure scheme is proposed. The mathematical model of the electromagnetic damper is established, the derivation of skin depth, damping torque and damping coefficient is completed, and the design of the shape and size of the electromagnetic damper is combined with the derivation results and the technical index of shimmy reduction. The electromagnetic field finite element simulation results show that the mathematical modeling method of the electromagnetic damper has good accuracy, and its application to the shimmy reduction module of the electrically actuated nose wheel steering system is also feasible and superior. Finally, the key factors influencing the performance of electromagnetic damper shimmy reduction are studied and analyzed, thus forming a complete electromagnetic damper shimmy reduction technology for the electrically actuated system, and laying the foundation for the design of novel all-electric aircraft and landing gear.

There are many factors causing the shimmy of the aircraft landing gear and structural clearance of landing gear is a typical factor. Some aircraft in service or operation did not shimmy before, but suddenly appeared after a period of use. To solve the problem of clearance shimmy during the service of a certain aircraft, we established a dynamic model of rotating gear with clearance based on the flexible multi-body dynamics model of landing gear and L-N contact theory. We defined different types of clearance and established a mechanical model of aircraft pendulum vibration considering the clearance of landing gear structure for dynamic simulation, and studied the effects of different clearance types, clearance size of motion pair and different clearance positions on the stability of pendulum. The results show that the axial clearance has little effect on the shimmy performance of landing gear; the radial clearance has a certain effect on the shimmy performance of medium speed running, which slightly improves the shimmy damping required by medium speed running; the rotational clearance affects the shimmy performance of the nose landing gear by affecting the force transmission of structural components. The required shimmy damping coefficient increases at low speed and decreases at high speed. The main reason for the return clearance is that during the return, the shimmy damper does not work, which leads to the decrease of the shimmy damping performance and the increase of the required shimmy damping coefficient in the whole speed range. Meanwhile, the structural clearance will increase the shimmy frequency of the nose landing gear. By analysing the yaw angle of the nose landing gear and the time domain curve of the yaw angle of the yaw damper, we can determine which structure of the landing gear and which type of clearance is the cause of the yaw. Finally, the coupling effect caused by the main structural parameters of the landing gear in “gap shimmy” was analysed according to different mechanical stability distances and strut stiffness of the nose landing gear, providing reference for aircraft anti-shimmy design, nose landing gear fault diagnosis and nose landing gear maintenance support.

In order to improve aircraft ground handling characteristics and airport working efficiency, large handling angle and torque are requested for the nose wheel steering system of large civil aircraft. A following swivel selector valve is firstly designed to meet the demand for the hydraulic pressure commutating as soon as the dual actuator nose wheel steering mechanism passes through its dead center position. Considering the multiple objective functions of nose wheel steering mechanisms, those core design parameters are multiobjective optimized. A nose wheel steering electrohydraulic servo system with handling and antishimmy functions is designed for the steering mechanism. Then the prototypes of the steering mechanism and electrohydraulic servo system are researched to validate the design. Using the swing actuator to provide the load torque and ground excitation, the steering test bench is prepared to test the system working. The steering test and the antishimmy test are conducted to verify the functions of the system. The test results, such as steer angle, steer torque hydraulic pressure, and antishimmy torque, are analyzed in detail and compared with the theoretical results. The results show that the property of the prototype achieves the design objectives, such as work mode, steer angle, and steer torque.
