The management of infectious diseases has proven to be a daunting task for clinicians worldwide, and the rapid development of antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative bacteria is making it even more challenging. The first-line therapy is empirical, and it most often comprises β-lactam antibiotics. Among Gram-negative bacteria, Proteus mirabilis, an important community and hospital pathogen associated primarily with urinary tract and wound infection, holds a special place. This review’s aim was to collate and examine recent studies investigating β-lactam resistance phenotypes and mechanisms of Proteus species and the global significance of its β-lactam resistance evolution. Moreover, the genetic background of resistance traits and the role of mobile genetic elements in the dissemination of resistance genes were evaluated. P. mirabilis as the dominant pathogen develops resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins (ESC) by producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases (p-AmpC). β-lactamase-mediated resistance to carbapenems in Enterobacterales, including Proteus spp., is mostly due to expression of carbapenemases of class A (KPC); class B (metallo-β-lactamases or MBLs of IMP, VIM, or NDM series); or class D or carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinases (CHDL). Previously, a dominant ESBL type in P. mirabilis was TEM-52; yet, lately, it has been replaced by CTX-M variants, particularly CTX-M-14. ESC resistance can also be mediated by p-AmpC, with CMY-16 as the dominant variant. Carbapenem resistance in Proteus spp. is a challenge due to its intrinsic resistance to colistin and tigecyclin. The first carbapenemases reported belonged to class B, most frequently VIM-1 and NDM-5. In Europe, predominantly France and Belgium, a clonal lineage positive for OXA-23 CHDL spreads rapidly undetected, due to its low-level resistance to carbapenems. The amazing capacity of Proteus spp. to accumulate a plethora of various resistance traits is leading to multidrug or extensively drug-resistant phenotypes.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria of the utmost importance are extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CRE), carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB), carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus spp. (VRE). In this study, an evaluation of MDR bacteria in surgical intensive care units in a tertiary referral hospital was conducted. The study aimed to characterize β-lactamases and other resistance traits of Gram-negative bacteria isolated in surgical intensive care units (ICUs). Disk diffusion and the broth dilution method were used for antibiotic susceptibility testing, whereas ESBL screening was performed through a double disk synergy test and an inhibitor-based test with clavulanic acid. A total of 119 MDR bacterial isolates were analysed. ESBL production was observed in half of the Proteus mirabilis, 90% of the Klebsiella pneumoniae and all of the Enterobacter cloacae and Escherichia coli isolates. OXA-48 carbapenemase, carried by the L plasmid, was detected in 34 K. pneumoniae and one E. coli and Enterobacter cloacae complex isolates, whereas NDM occurred sporadically and was identified in three K. pneumoniae isolates. OXA-48 positive isolates coharboured ESBLs belonging to the CTX-M family in all but one isolate. OXA-23 carbapenemase was confirmed in all A. baumannii isolates. The findings of this study provide valuable insight of resistance determinants of Enterobacterales and A. baumannii which will enhance surveillance and intervention strategies that are necessary to curb the ever-growing carbapenem resistance rates.

This study analyzes the dynamics of sugar beet root, crown, and leaves fresh and dry matter (FM and DM, respectively) accumulation per plant and their mass ratio at different plant densities and nitrogen fertilization. The biennial field trials were set as four different planting densities (60,000, 80,000, 100,000 and 140,000 plants ha-1) and three methods of nitrogen application in spring: control – without nitrogen fertilization (N0), presowing only (N1), and presowing with topdressing (N2). Close to the maturation, the mean DM of the whole root, crown, and leaves on September 20, 2014 amounted to 28.8, 7.3 and 4.0 t ha-1, respectively, whereas it amounted to 20.7, 4.1 and 2.3 t ha-1 in 2015, respectively. Moreover, with regard to the plant densities, the highest root DM was at 140,000 and 100,000 (31.6 t ha-1 in 2014 and 22.4 t ha-1 in 2015), compared to the wider plant densities of 80,000 and 60,000 plants ha-1 (22.4 t ha-1 in 2014 and 18.1 t ha-1 in 2015). Nitrogen fertilization positively influenced on dry matter accumulation, but it was different within the years. On September 20, 2014, a presowing fertilization (N1) increased the root DM by 17%, compared to the control, whereas in 2015 the presowing with topdressing (N2) increased the root DM by 30%. The root-to-leaves FM ratio amounted to 1:3.9 on May 30, 2014, whereas it amounted to 1:0.1 on September 20, 2014. The leaves FM was at its largest on June 20, 2015, when the root-to-leaves ratio amounted to 1:1.1, and gradually decreased to 1:0.1 on September 20, 2015.

K. pneumoniae harbors various antibiotic resistance determinants like extended-spectrum and plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases and carbapenemases. In the last three years, in the period of intense population aging, migrations and climate changes in Europe and Croatia as well, we observed changes in antibiotic resistance patters of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP) isolates obtained routinely in community and inpatient setting. The aim was to compare and subsequently analyze CRKP hospital and community isolates resistance mechanisms, traits and molecular epidemiology, in order to analyze the dynamic of resistance trends, carbapenemase types and plasmid epidemiology. Disk diffusion and broth dilution method were the methods of choice to determine antibiotic susceptibility. β-lactamases were screened by phenotypic methods and confirmed with PCR. In total 113 isolates were analysed. Resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanate and ertapenem was confirmed in all strains. High resistance rates (over 90%) were observed for extended-spectrum cephalosporins, and ciprofloxacin. OKNV (OXA-48, KPC, NDM, VIM) testing and PCR detected OXA-48 in 106, NDM in 7 and KPC in only one isolate. ESBLs accompanied carbapenemases in 103 isolates. IncL, associated with OXA-48, was the dominant plasmid type. No significant differences in the resistance profile and resistance determinants were found between hospital and community isolates plasmid type. The predominance of OXA-48 carbapenemase is in line with the reports from the neigbouring countries.

Nitrogen fertilization greatly affects the development of sugar beet leaf and photosynthetic activity. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of leaf SPAD index, chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), carotenoids (Caro), and the macronutrient status (N, P, K, Na, Mg) in different N fertilization rates in sugar beet production. This study set up a two-year field experiment in Eastern Croatia. The N fertilization rate was applied as: N0—control, N1—only presowing fertilization (45 kg/ha), and N2—presowing with topdressing (99 kg/ha in 2014 and 85.5 kg/ha in 2015). In general, N fertilization has a significant (p ≤ 0.05) influence on leaf pigments, except for Chl b. With the highest N dose (N2), the Chl content in the leaves increased by 12% compared to the control treatment (0.75 mg/g FW). The Caro dynamics in the leaves of vegetative growth were significantly different (p ≤ 0.05); leaves in the younger growth stage at the end of May had the highest Caro content (0.011 mg/g FW). In general, the SPAD index was significantly different (p ≤ 0.05), among N fertilization, whereas the lowest SPAD was found at the control treatment (38.7) and the highest at the N2 treatment (40.8). In general, regarding nitrogen fertilization, the lowest SPAD readings had sugar beet leaves at the control treatment (38.7), whereas the highest was determined at the N2 treatment (40.8). A strong positive relationship (p ≤ 0.01) was determined for Chl a, Chl b, Chl a + b, and Chl a + b/Caro with the SPAD index, whereas an inverse relationship with the SPAD index was determined for Caro and Chl a/b. The results demonstrate that nitrogen application, particularly at higher rates, positively influences chlorophyll and carotenoid content, as well as overall plant health, which can inform agricultural practices for more sustainable and efficient sugar beet cultivation.

This paper presents a three-year study of the influence of different amounts of nitrogen on the properties of flax plants and fibres. At the same time, the acclimatization ability of five different cultivars of fibre flax was estimated through the valorisation of their morphological (technical stem length, stem thickness) and physical-mechanical properties of the fibres (length, fineness, tenacity). Cultivar trials with fibre flax were set up across three years (2008–2010) at the following locations: the experimental fields of the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb on anthropogenized Eutric Cambisol and the College of Agriculture at Križevci on pseudogley on level terrain. The selected cultivars were fertilized without and with different nitrogen rates (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha) in different time. The trials were carried out according to the RCBD in four replications. According to the results of the three-year study of flax and fibres, significant differences were established among the cultivars and among the added nitrogen rates under study. Based on the results of the morphological and textile-technological properties of flax, the cultivars Viola and Agatha achieved higher values at the location of Križevci, where it was not necessary to add more than 30 kg N/ha.
