The effectiveness of a closed-loop supply chain strategy for a tenable circular economy heavily depends on consumers' willingness to purchase such products. However, research has documented that consumers are skeptical about these products, thus making of interest the understanding of consumers' attitude and purchase intention. The literature provides limited evidence about the role of specific contextual marketing stimuli in shaping consumers' intention to purchase products derived from a closed-loop supply chain approach. This study aims to fill this important gap by examining the effect of the importance paid by consumers to seller reputation and distribution on consumers׳ intention to purchase a particular type of these products, i.e. refurbished smartphones. To do so, this study combines insights deriving from the stimulus response model and prospect theory. Findings from structural equation modeling indicate that the importance paid by consumers to seller reputation and distribution are significantly related to perceived value and risk, which in turn affect attitude and the intention to purchase refurbished products. In addition, findings highlight the centrality of the attitude construct in the model. The implications of these results can be useful for closed-loop supply chain managers, remanufacturers, and sellers, as they can help to improve their marketing initiatives and policies. Eventually, our theoretical model can also help scholars to improve the understanding of consumers’ mental processes when evaluating refurbished products.

Ongoing economic, social and environmental developments have forced the production system to undertake a profound transformation, shifting from a linear to a circular model. The transformation towards a circular economy poses significant challenges for established companies, in many cases requiring a strong modification of their current business models, start-ups and new ventures. Firms need to completely rethink their value proposition, modifying how the product or service is produced, delivered to the customers and disposed of. As a result, interest in business model innovation with a view to a circular system has increased significantly over the last five years, leading to a flourishing literature production. Although several literature reviews have been published on the topic of the circular business model, few of them include the innovation dimension. Moreover, the time horizon covered by the previous reviews extends to 2019 and in one case to 2020. Since 2020 saw a 135% increase in scientific production compared to the previous year, it is necessary to update the prior works, taking into account the new contributions. Our paper aims to bridge this gap by proposing a literature review based on keywords analysis. In this way, it is possible to analyze the issues addressed in the circular business model innovation (CMBI) by categorizing them as core, emerging/phantom, trendy or intermittent. This analysis is particularly suitable for identifying future research directions as signaled by the emerging themes.

Logistics plays an essential role in supply chain management to plan and coordinate the movement of products in a timely, safely and effectively way. The recent term Logistics 4.0 focusses on the specific applications of Industry 4.0 in the area of logistics and was created as an integral part of the Industry 4.0 concept. This study aims to contribute to the state‐of‐the‐art about this topic by analysing and reviewing the scientific literature relating to Industry 4.0 applied to the logistics field. By means of a query on the Scopus database (www.scopus.com), 131 articles were retrieved and judged in line with the research topic. A bibliometric analysis identified the most relevant articles, authors, keywords, countries and journals on this subject. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first systematic review of Logistics 4.0 using bibliometric analysis. Finally, the research gaps identified will provide a reference point that will encourage and guide interested researchers for future study.

The growing interest of the scientific literature regarding purchase behavior, circular economy and new business models has generated the need, as well as the opportunity, for a comprehensive review and categorization of the state of the existing research carried out so far. The present study aims at reconciling the wide but fragmented literature dealing with the purchase intention of recycled products. An integrative theoretical framework, able to combine several constructs, perspectives, and theories discussed to date on the topic, is proposed. Such framework represents a further step toward a comprehensive understanding of behavioral theories and constructs, which need to be understood to design effective business models for the circular economy. This effort could be highly valuable both for scholars interested in the topic—as the integrative framework could assist them in theorizing additional effects—and for firms’ managers—who can understand, more in depth, the drivers of the consumers’ purchasing process and act accordingly.

Innovation is considered as one of the main elements of a company success. In recent years, it has assumed a relevant role also in the food industry that was generally defined as a rather mature and slow-going sector. The aim of this paper is to analyse the innovation models applied to the food industry and to carry out a systematic review of the literature. In particular, we overview the most relevant innovation models and identify the main thematic areas discussed in the period from 2016 to 2020. We also provide recommendations for future research directions.

Purpose Through a comprehensive review of the literature on open innovation (OI), this study aimed to achieve two objectives: (1) to identify the main thematic areas discussed in the past and track their evolution over time; and (2) to provide recommendations for future research avenues. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the first objective, a method based on text mining was implemented, with the analysis focusing on 1,772 journal articles published between 2003 and 2018. For the second objective, a review based on recent and relevant papers was conducted for each thematic area. Findings The paper identified nine thematic areas explored in existing research: (1) context-dependency of OI, (2) collaborative frameworks, (3) organizational dimensions of OI, (4) performance and OI, (5) external search for OI, (6) OI in small and medium-sized enterprises, (7) OI in the pharmaceutical industry, (8) OI and intellectual property rights, and (9) technology. The analysis of the most recent papers belonging to the more investigated areas offers suitable suggestions for future research avenues. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no review has yet been undertaken to reorganize the OI literature.

Purpose Starting from the model of the initiation and evolution of inter-firm knowledge transfer in R&D relationships developed by Faems et al. (2007), the purpose of this paper is to refine and improve this model, assessing its reliability in a different and wider context and extending it according to the outcomes. Design/methodology/approach A multiple case-study approach was implemented, examining 34 dyadic inter-firm R&D relationships. This methodology suited the research goal of exploring the validity of a model in an area where little data or theory exists. Findings The theoretical model proposed by Faems et al. (2007) was improved, confirming the adequacy of the overall structure of their intuition and highlighting several differences in terms of factors that lead to the dissolution of R&D relationships. These differences mainly refer to partners’ similarities before starting R&D relationships, co-opetition situations, knowledge leakage/opportunistic behavior and reputation issues. Originality/value This work is the first to investigate two open research gaps related to the model of the initiation and evolution of inter-firm knowledge transfer in R&D relationships: the need for additional case studies in other contexts to develop a more general theory and the lack of research incorporating issues such as relational capital between partners, governance form and alliance scope in an integrated analysis.

This paper examines a Complex Product System (CoPS) project, Metis, an externally occulted coronagraph that is part of the ESA’s Solar Orbiter mission and whose development required the involvement of scientists, international firms and space agencies. Specifically, this study attempted to investigate two main issues: (i) the main structural inter-organizational tensions emerged over the years, and (ii) if and how they were solved, distinguishing between contingent and structural solutions. The coronagraph was successfully delivered to the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2017, notwithstanding two main tensions related to the shortage of financial resources and to the organizational design of the ESA mission. This study takes different theoretical lenses (contingency theory, paradox theory, and social balance theory) to infer about how structural inter-organizational tensions were mitigated, proposing the need to combine several theoretical perspectives. The contingent and structural solutions identified and discussed could have implications for several future CoPS projects.

By adopting multiple case-studies, this paper attempts to investigate, in the engineering to order companies’ context, knowledge leakage problems. It proposes a framework for managing knowledge leakage that represents the first attempt to depict together different knowledge threats, knowledge identification methods, and defensive mechanisms. Results confirm, in the context investigated, the existence of the knowledge threats and the adoption of knowledge identification and defensive mechanisms identified in the literature, even if with some exception, and recognize three “new for the literature” methods. Findings neglect the significance of knowledge management systems, thus raising doubts about their usefulness in knowledge leakage situations. Our study is valuable not only for scholars interested in the topic but also for firms’ managers, as it could help them in understanding, detecting and preventing knowledge leakage situations.

The existing literature provides a ‘piecemeal’ approach to our understanding of Industry 4.0 as a ‘technological revolution’. However, such an approach leads to scattered literature and the possibility (or risk) that the focus could spin out of control in terms of the existing themes and future research trends. Consequently, the aim of this research is twofold: (i) to identify the main overarching themes discussed in the past and track their evolution over time, and (ii) propose a future research agenda for each overarching theme that considers the multidisciplinary nature of research efforts made on the topic. To reach the first objective, a method based on text mining was implemented. To reach the second one, a review based on recent and relevant paper was made for each overarching theme. Text mining suggests four overarching themes: (i) business, (ii) operations, (iii) technological solutions and (iv) work and skills. ‘Business’ includes studies that investigate the impact of Industry 4.0 on business perspectives and they suggest that governments and industries have a change in manufacturing perspective and attempt to benefit from this industrial revolution wave. ‘Operations’ includes studies investigating the impact of Industry 4.0 new technologies on production, logistics, and supply-chain processes. Manuscripts belonging to ‘Technological solutions’ discuss technological solutions at the core of Industry 4.0. ‘Work and skills’ stream of literature attempts to under the human element lurking behind the scene of Industry 4.0 regarding opportunities and implications. Finally, the paper suggests a future research agenda for each overarching theme, thus paving the way for new research on the topic.

The impact of environmental regulation on the competitiveness of firms and industries remains a hot topic. Since the formulation of the Porter hypothesis, scholars from different research areas have tried to confirm or deny it. However, despite a vast literature engaging this debate, it remains unclear whether and under what conditions the hypothesis could be considered valid. We believe that this is due to the need to consider some additional factors. The aim of this review is to propose additional and significant themes, namely value appropriation and pollution intensity, to be considered when examining the impact of environmental regulation on the innovation and profitability of firms. Results show that the validity of the Porter hypothesis cannot be proved in any condition, but at the same time, there are additional factors that have a relevant influence on that construct, which can lead to a validation or rejection of the hypothesis.

Increasingly, the effects of supply chains on environmental issues have been a focal point in discussions involving stakeholders, authorities, and customers. The aim of this paper is to inspect how innovation and sustainability are integrated into the wider context of the supply chains. To this end, a systematic literature review was carried out with a particular focus on papers published in recent years (2015–2017) so as to continue from a previous review on the sustainable supply chain innovation topic covering the time span of 1996–2014. The descriptive aspects of the published papers are firstly examined, i.e., the year of publication, journal, research methodology, industry field and country of the study, followed by the thematic ones, i.e., key themes of the innovation process, the types of innovation found, their newness, dimensions, and main theories that emerged. The analysis shows an upward trend of literature in numerical terms and a wider spread of sustainable innovations. Additionally, the research highlights further areas of research that are deserving of attention. These areas include analyses of specific industrial sectors which have been less covered in the published literature; research activities in the less developed countries; more attention on the social dimension of sustainability; a more general contribution from some nations that turned out to be less productive or even inactive on the sustainable supply chain innovation topic. Finally, a framework is developed which could constitute the basis for further developments and research on this issue.

Notwithstanding the paradigm of open innovation that was introduced and studied within large companies, in the last decade, studies on this concept in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have experienced a rapid growth (e.g., van de Vrande et al., 2009; Spithoven et al., 2013). However, several issues remain unexplored. Theories and models for the management of open innovation in this context are not well established in the literature, but are necessary for SMEs’ managers. The aim of this chapter is to understand, through a systematic review of the literature, if and how the specific characteristics and behaviors of SMEs affect their implementation of the open innovation paradigm. Specifically, a “4W open innovation model” including motives, facilitators and hindering factors (Why/why not), type of exchanged knowledge (What), practices and activities (hoW), and actors (With whom) is proposed. The results allow us to point out a future research agenda.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is threefold: first, to identify the unique characteristics of family firms in terms of the ability to manage and the willingness to engage in collaborative innovation; second, to investigate the existence of contingent factors affecting the heterogeneity of family firms’ behavior regarding these dimensions; and third, to propose a future research agenda. Design/methodology/approach This study consists of a systematic literature review. Findings Based on the results of a systematic review, the authors explain why family firms have a different behavior in terms of collaborative innovation if compared to the non-family counterparts and, following the contingent-based perspective, the authors also explain how different contingent factors can contribute to cause the heterogeneity of family firms’ behavior when facing collaborative innovation. Finally, the authors present a research agenda aimed at stimulating and guiding future research. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of the review is the wide definition of collaborative innovation provided at the beginning of the manuscript, in the introduction. In fact, with the aim of including all the studies dealing with collaborative innovation in the family firms’ context, the authors adopt a broad definition of external collaborative innovation that encompasses each process by which organizations work together to achieve an innovation outcome. Originality/value To the knowledge, this is the first systematic review addressing this relevant topic and proposing a future research agenda. The authors believe it could represent an important guide (but also a stimulus) for scholars interesting in the topic.

The notion of sustainability, in its three-fold meaning (economic, environmental, and social), is being adopted more and more by companies. Today it is widely accepted that sustainability cannot be achieved by firms in isolation, but requires the collaboration of all supply chain players. This issue is particularly relevant in industrial contexts where the supply chains are complex in terms of structure and number of players, such as the construction industry. Thus, the aim of the paper is to explore the sustainability practices adopted in the construction industry, with a particular attention to the role of environmental collaboration of supply chain partners in achieving sustainability. By means of multiple case study-based research, we investigate sustainability practices on a sample of construction companies of Italy, thus identifying three main sustainability approaches, which differ in both the strategic orientation towards sustainability and the level of implementation in design, purchasing, and governance processes, as well as the main variables driving the adoption of these approaches.
