Prof. Gianluigi Vendemiale is an Honorary Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics at the University of Foggia (Italy), having previously served as Chief of the Internal Medicine Department and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He earned a medical degree in 1980 and became an Internal Medicine Consultant in 1985. After graduating, he spent two years at the Mount
Sinai School of Medicine - Alcohol Research Center (New York, NY) as a clinical and research fellow, where he investigated the mechanisms of alcohol- and drug-induced hepatotoxicity, their metabolic interactions, and hepatic protective systems. His research fields include oxidative mechanisms of drugs, ethanol metabolism and hepatotoxicity, drug–alcohol interactions, study of alterations in mitochondrial energy metabolism, ATP synthesis, and intracellular glutathione distribution also associated with increased oxidative stress in models of aging and liver regeneration, study of malnutrition and its impact on both pro-inflammatory status and various clinical outcomes across different care settings. He has served as coordinator for several Research Projects of National Interest and as director of the residency program in internal medicine and geriatrics. He has published 280 papers in international journals (H-index 68).
He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics and is currently Project Manager at Universo Salute, Opera Don Uva, Bisceglie – Bari, Italy.
