Recent improvements in networking technologies have led to a significant shift towards distributed cloud-based services. However, adequate management of computation resources by providers is vital to maintain the costs of operations and quality of services. A robust system is needed to forecast demand and prevent excessive resource allocations. Extensive literature review suggests that the potential of recurrent neural networks with attention mechanisms is not sufficiently explored and applied to cloud computing. To address this gap, this work proposes a methodology for forecasting load of cloud resources based on recurrent neural networks with and without attention layers. Utilized deep learning models are further optimized through hyperparameter tuning using a modified particle swarm optimization metaheuristic, which is also introduced in this work. To help models deal with complex non-stationary data sequences, the variational mode decomposition for decomposing complex series has also been utilized. The performance of this approach is compared to several state-of-the-art algorithms on a real-world cloud-load dataset. Captured performance metrics ( $$R^2$$ R 2 , mean square error, root mean square error, and index of agreement) strongly indicate that the proposed method has great potential for accurately forecasting cloud load. Further, models optimized by the introduced metaheuristic outperformed competing approaches, which was confirmed by conducted statistical validation. In addition, the best-performing forecasting model has been subjected to SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis to determine the impact each feature has on model forecasts, which could potentially be a very useful tool for cloud providers when making decisions.

Monitoring heart electrical activity is an effective way of detecting existing and developing conditions. This is usually performed as a non-invasive test using a network of up to 12 sensors (electrodes) on the chest and limbs to create an electrocardiogram (ECG). By visually observing these readings, experienced professionals can make accurate diagnoses and, if needed, request further testing. However, the training and experience needed to make accurate diagnoses are significant. This work explores the potential of recurrent neural networks for anomaly detection in ECG readings. Furthermore, to attain the best possible performance for these networks, training parameters, and network architectures are optimized using a modified version of the well-established particle swarm optimization algorithm. The performance of the optimized models is compared to models created by other contemporary optimizers, and the results show significant potential for real-world applications. Further analyses are carried out on the best-performing models to determine feature importance.

This study explores crop yield forecasting through weight agnostic neural networks (WANN) optimized by a modified metaheuristic. WANNs offer the potential for lighter networks with shared weights, utilizing a two-layer cooperative framework to optimize network architecture and shared weights. The proposed metaheuristic is tested on real-world crop datasets and benchmarked against state-of-the-art algorithms using standard regression metrics. While not claiming WANN as the definitive solution, the model demonstrates significant potential in crop forecasting with lightweight architectures. The optimized WANN models achieve a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.017698 and an R-squared ( $$R^2$$ R 2 ) score of 0.886555, indicating promising forecasting performance. Statistical analysis and Simulator for Autonomy and Generality Evaluation (SAGE) validate the improvement significance and feature importance of the proposed approach.

Respiratory conditions have been a focal point in recent medical studies. Early detection and timely treatment are crucial factors in improving patient outcomes for any medical condition. Traditionally, doctors diagnose respiratory conditions through an investigation process that involves listening to the patient’s lungs. This study explores the potential of combining audio analysis with convolutional neural networks to detect respiratory conditions in patients. Given the significant impact of proper hyperparameter selection on network performance, contemporary optimizers are employed to enhance efficiency. Moreover, a modified algorithm is introduced that is tailored to the specific demands of this study. The proposed approach is validated using a real-world medical dataset and has demonstrated promising results. Two experiments are conducted: the first tasked models with respiratory condition detection when observing mel spectrograms of patients’ breathing patterns, while the second experiment considered the same data format for multiclass classification. Contemporary optimizers are employed to optimize the architecture selection and training parameters of models in both cases. Under identical test conditions, the best models are optimized by the introduced modified metaheuristic, with an accuracy of 0.93 demonstrated for condition detection, and a slightly reduced accuracy of 0.75 for specific condition identification.

The concepts of smart agriculture, with the aim of highly automated industrial mass production leaning towards self-farming, can be scaled down to the level of small farms and homesteads, with the use of more affordable electronic components and open-source software. The backbone of smart agriculture, in both cases, is the Internet of Things (IoT). Single-board computers (SBCs) such as a Raspberry Pi, working under Linux or Windows IoT operating systems, make affordable platform for smart devices with modular architecture, suitable for automation of various tasks by using machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV). Similarly, the Arduino microcontroller enables the building of nodes in the IoT network, capable of reading various physical values, wirelessly sending them to other computers for processing and furthermore, controlling electronic elements and machines in the physical world based on the received data. This review gives a limited overview of currently available technologies for smart automation of industrial agricultural production and of alternative, smaller-scale projects applicable in homesteads, based on Arduino and Raspberry Pi hardware, as well as a draft proposal of an integrated homestead automation system based on the IoT.
