Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising paradigm for training machine learning models across distributed devices while preserving their data privacy. However, the robustness of FL models against adversarial data and model attacks, noisy updates, and label-flipped data issues remain a critical concern. In this article, we present a systematic literature review using the PRISMA framework to comprehensively analyze existing research on robust FL. Through a rigorous selection process using six key databases (ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, Springer, Web of Science, and Scopus), we identify and categorize 244 studies into eight themes of ensuring robustness in FL: objective regularization, optimizer modification, differential privacy employment, additional dataset requirement and decentralization orchestration, manifold, client selection, new aggregation algorithms, and aggregation hyperparameter tuning. We synthesize the findings from these themes, highlighting the various approaches and their potential gaps proposed to enhance the robustness of FL models. Furthermore, we discuss future research directions, focusing on the potential of hybrid approaches, ensemble techniques, and adaptive mechanisms for addressing the challenges associated with robust FL. This review not only provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in robust FL but also serves as a roadmap for researchers and practitioners seeking to advance the field and develop more robust and resilient FL systems.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are commonly recognized as environmentally friendly modes of transportation. They function by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy using different types of motors, which aligns with the sustainable principles embraced by smart cities. The motors of EVs store and consume electrical power from renewable energy (RE) sources through interfacing connections using power electronics technology to provide mechanical power through rotation. The reliable operation of an EV mainly relies on the condition of interfacing connections in the EV, particularly the connection between the 3- $\phi $ inverter output and the brushless DC (BLDC) motor. In this paper, machine learning (ML) tools are deployed for detecting and classifying the faults in the connecting lines from 3- $\phi $ inverter output to the BLDC motor during operational mode in the EV platform, considering double-line and three-phase faults. Several machine learning-based fault identification and classification tools, namely the Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, Stochastic Gradient Descent, AdaBoost, XGBoost, K-Nearest Neighbour, and Voting Classifier, were tuned for identifying and categorizing faults to ensure robustness and reliability. The ML classifications were developed based on the datasets of healthy and faulty conditions considering the combination of six critical parameters that have significance in reliable EV operation, namely the current supplied to the BLDC motor from the inverter, the modulated DC voltage, output speed, and measured speed, as well as the output of the Hall-effect sensor. In addition, the superiority of the proposed fault detection and classification approaches using ML tools was assessed by comparing the detection and classification efficiency through some statistical performance parameter comparisons among the classifiers.

To efficiently capture diverse fluctuation profiles in forecasting crude oil prices, we here propose to combine heterogenous predictors for forecasting the prices of crude oil. Specifically, a forecasting model is developed using blended ensemble learning that combines various machine learning methods, including k-nearest neighbor regression, regression trees, linear regression, ridge regression, and support vector regression. Data for Brent and WTI crude oil prices at various time series frequencies are used to validate the proposed blending ensemble learning approach. To show the validity of the proposed model, its performance is further benchmarked against existing individual and ensemble learning methods used for predicting crude oil price, such as lasso regression, bagging lasso regression, boosting, random forest, and support vector regression. We demonstrate that our proposed blending-based model dominates the existing forecasting models in terms of forecasting errors for both short- and medium-term horizons.

The rise of social media has changed how people view connections. Machine Learning (ML)-based sentiment analysis and news categorization help understand emotions and access news. However, most studies focus on complex models requiring heavy resources and slowing inference times, making deployment difficult in resource-limited environments. In this paper, we process both structured and unstructured data, determining the polarity of text using the TextBlob scheme to determine the sentiment of news headlines. We propose a Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD)-based Ridge classifier (RC) for blending SGDR with an advanced string processing technique to effectively classify news articles. Additionally, we explore existing supervised and unsupervised ML algorithms to gauge the effectiveness of our SGDR classifier. The scalability and generalization capability of SGD and L2 regularization techniques in RCs to handle overfitting and balance bias and variance provide the proposed SGDR with better classification capability. Experimental results highlight that our string processing pipeline significantly boosts the performance of all ML models. Notably, our ensemble SGDR classifier surpasses all state-of-the-art ML algorithms, achieving an impressive 98.12% accuracy. McNemar’s significance tests reveal that our SGDR classifier achieves a 1% significance level improvement over K-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree, and AdaBoost and a 5% significance level improvement over other algorithms. These findings underscore the superior proficiency of linear models in news categorization compared to tree-based and nonlinear counterparts. This study contributes valuable insights into the efficacy of the proposed methodology, elucidating its potential for news categorization and sentiment analysis.
