A novel intelligent fault diagnosis method for motor roller bearings which operate under unsteady rotating speed and load is proposed in this paper. The pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD) and the relative crossing information (RCI) methods are used for extracting the feature spectra from the non-stationary vibration signal measured for condition diagnosis. The RCI is used to automatically extract the feature spectrum from the time-frequency distribution of the vibration signal. The extracted feature spectrum is instantaneous, and not correlated with the rotation speed and load. By using the ant colony optimization (ACO) clustering algorithm, the synthesizing symptom parameters (SSP) for condition diagnosis are obtained. The experimental results shows that the diagnostic sensitivity of the SSP is higher than original symptom parameter (SP), and the SSP can sensitively reflect the characteristics of the feature spectrum for precise condition diagnosis. Finally, a fuzzy diagnosis method based on sequential inference and possibility theory is also proposed, by which the conditions of the machine can be identified sequentially as well.

This paper proposes a new signal feature extraction and fault diagnosis method for fault diagnosis of low-speed machinery. Statistic filter (SF) and wavelet package transform (WPT) are combined with moving-peak-hold method (M-PH) to extract features of a fault signal, and special bearing diagnostic symptom parameters (SSPs) in a frequency domain that are sensitive to bearing fault diagnosis are defined to recognize fault types. The SF is first used to adaptively cancel noises, and then fault detection is performed by exploiting the optimum symptom parameters in a time domain to identify a normal or fault state. For precise diagnosis, the SSPs are calculated after the signals are processed by M-PH and WPT. A decision tree is used to structure intelligent diagnosis rules in each step until the states are fully and automatically detected. The efficacy of this method was confirmed by applying it to an experimental low-speed rotation machine.

Rotating machinery often works under time-varying speeds, and nonstationary conditions as well as harsh environments make its key parts, such as rolling bearings and gears, prone to faults. Therefore, a number of fault diagnosis methods including nonstationary signal processing methods and data-driven methods have been developed. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the fault diagnosis of rotating machinery under time-varying speeds proposed mainly during the last five years. First, spectrum analysis-based methods, including order tracking, cyclic spectrum correlation and generalized demodulation, are reviewed. Second, the time-frequency analysis (TFA) methods in machinery fault diagnosis are divided into postprocessing methods and chirplet transform-based methods and are reviewed. Then, the artificial feature extraction- and deep learning-enabled intelligent diagnosis methods proposed specifically for time-varying speed conditions are reviewed. Finally, the research prospects are discussed. We not only review the relevant state-of-art methods and analyze how they overcome the problems caused by speed fluctuations but also discuss their advantages and disadvantages as well as the challenges that will be encountered when applying them to industrial applications. This paper is expected to provide new graduate students, institutions and companies with a preliminary understanding of the methods on this topic.

Rolling bearings are key components of rotating machinery. Thus the prediction of remaining useful life (RUL) is vital in condition based maintenance. This paper proposes a new method for RUL prediction of bearings based on time-varying Kalman filter, which can automatically match different degradation stages of bearings and effectively realize the prediction of RUL. The evolution of monitoring data in normal and slow degradation stages is linear trend, and the evolution in accelerated degradation stage is non-linear. So Kalman filter models based on linear and quadratic functions are established respectively. Meanwhile, a sliding window relative error is constructed to adaptively judge the bearing degradation stages. It can automatically switch filter models to process monitoring data at different stages. Then the RUL can be predicted effectively. Two groups of bearing run-to-failure datasets are utilized to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.

An enhanced intelligent diagnosis method for rotary equipment is proposed based on multi-sensor data-fusion and an improved deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models. An improved CNN based on LeNet-5 is constructed that can enhance the features of the samples by stacking bottleneck layers without changing the size of the samples. A new conversion approaches are also proposed for converting multi-sensor vibration signals into color images, and it can refine features and enlarge the differences between different types of fault signals by the fused images transformed in red-green-blue (RGB) color space. In the last stage of network learning, visual clustering is realized with t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) to evaluate the performance of the network. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, examples in practice such as the diagnosis for the wind power test rigs and industrial fan system are provided with the prediction accuracies of 99.89% and 99.77%, respectively. In addition, the efficiency of other comparative baseline approaches such as the deep belief network (DBN) and support vector machine (SVM) is evaluated. In conclusion, the proposed intelligent diagnosis method based on multi-sensor data-fusion and CNN shows higher prediction accuracy and more obvious visualization clustering effects.
