This review aims to describe and critically analyze studies published over the past four years on the application of polymeric dental nanomaterials as antimicrobial materials in various fields of dentistry. Nanoparticles are promising antimicrobial additives to restoration materials. According to published data, composites based on silver nanoparticles, zinc(II), titanium(IV), magnesium(II), and copper(II) oxide nanoparticles, chitosan nanoparticles, calcium phosphate or fluoride nanoparticles, and nanodiamonds can be used in dental therapy and endodontics. Composites with nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite and bioactive glass proved to be of low efficiency for application in these fields. The materials applicable in orthodontics include nanodiamonds, silver nanoparticles, titanium(IV) and zinc(II) oxide nanoparticles, bioactive glass, and yttrium(III) fluoride nanoparticles. Composites of silver nanoparticles and zinc(II) oxide nanoparticles are used in periodontics, and nanodiamonds and silver, chitosan, and titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles are employed in dental implantology and dental prosthetics. Composites based on titanium(IV) oxide can also be utilized in maxillofacial surgery to manufacture prostheses. Composites with copper(II) oxide nanoparticles and halloysite nanotubes are promising materials in the field of denture prosthetics. Composites with calcium(II) fluoride or phosphate nanoparticles can be used in therapeutic dentistry for tooth restoration.

The dressings containing nanoparticles of metals and metal oxides are promising types of materials for wound repair. In such dressings, biocompatible and nontoxic hydrophilic polymers are used as a matrix. In the present review, we take a look at the anti-microbial effect of the nanoparticle-modified wound dressings against various microorganisms and evaluate their healing action. A detailed analysis of 31 sources published in 2021 and 2022 was performed. Furthermore, a trend for development of modern antibacterial wound-healing nanomaterials was shown as exemplified in publications starting from 2018. The review may be helpful for researchers working in the areas of biotechnology, medicine, epidemiology, material science and other fields aimed at the improvement of the quality of life.

This review addresses research and development on the use of ionic liquids as extractants and diluents in the solvent extraction of metals. Primary attention is given to the efficiency and selectivity of metal extraction from industrial wastewater with ionic liquids composed of various cations and anions. The review covers literature sources published in the period of 2010–2021. The bibliography includes 98 references dedicated to research on the extraction and separation of lanthanides (17 sources), actinides (5 sources), heavy metals (35 sources), noble metals, including the platinum group (16 sources), and some other metals.

In the present review, works on the classes of chelating extractants for metals, compounds with several amide and carboxyl groups, azomethines, oximes, macrocyclic compounds (crown ethers and calixarenes), phenanthroline derivatives, and others are systematized. This review focuses on the efficiency and selectivity of the extractants in the recovery of metals from industrial wastewater, soil, spent raw materials, and the separation of metal mixtures. As a result of this study, it was found that over the past seven years, the largest number of works has been devoted to the extraction of heavy metals with amino acids (16 articles), azomethines and oximes (12 articles), lanthanids with amide compounds (15 articles), lanthanides and actinides with phenanthroline derivatives (7 articles), and noble metals with calixarenes (4 articles). Analysis of the literature showed that amino acids are especially effective for extracting heavy metals from the soil; thiodiglycolamides and aminocalixarenes for extracting noble metals from industrial waste; amide compounds, azomethines, oximes, and phenanthroline derivatives for extracting actinides; amide compounds for extracting lanthanides; crown ethers for extracting radioactive strontium, rhenium and technetium. The most studied parameters of extraction processes in the reviewed articles were the distribution ratios and separation factors. Based on the reviewed articles, it follows that chelate polydentate compounds are more efficient compounds for the extraction of metals from secondary resources compared to monodentate compounds.

The existing additives for dental restorative materials used in therapeutic dentistry, dentures, orthodontic appliances and adhesives (for example, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles) and also additives to root canal irrigants used in endodontics and to mouthwashes can be toxic to humans, cause allergic reactions and accumulate in organs and tissues. Today, a relevant trend is development of dental materials that have an antimicrobial effect and are non-toxic to humans. A promising alternative to the above-mentioned additives are phyto-components, including plant and propolis extracts, since they are cheap and non-toxic. This review is devoted to natural antimicrobial additives to dental materials used in orthodontics, dentures, therapeutic dentistry and endodontics. The review makes recommendations regarding additional research required for practical implementation of the considered dental materials (filling materials, mouthwashes, orthodontic adhesives and orthopaedic dental products), examines the influence of antimicrobial additives on the physicochemical and physicomechanical properties of polymer dental materials, and outlines the advantages and disadvantages of natural additives compared to synthetic ones. The main challenges in this research area are the narrow range of microorganisms for which the antimicrobial effect was studied (which are mainly S. mutans, E. faecalis, C. albicans) and the predominance of in vitro studies over clinical studies. The review covers published data of the past five years. The bibliography includes 123 references.

Modified polymeric gels, including nanogels, which play not only the role of a bioinert matrix, but also perform regulatory, catalytic, and transport functions due to the active fragments introduced into them, can significantly advance the solution to the problem of targeted drug delivery in an organism. This will significantly reduce the toxicity of used pharmaceuticals and expand the range of their therapeutic, diagnostic, and medical application. This review presents a comparative description of gels based on synthetic and natural polymers intended for pharmaceutical-targeted drug delivery in the field of therapy of inflammatory and infectious diseases, dentistry, ophthalmology, oncology, dermatology, rheumatology, neurology, and the treatment of intestinal diseases. An analysis was made of most actual sources published for 2021–2022. The review is focused on the comparative characteristics of polymer gels in terms of their toxicity to cells and the release rate of drugs from nano-sized hydrogel systems, which are crucial initial features for their further possible application in mentioned areas of biomedicine. Different proposed mechanisms of drug release from gels depending on their structure, composition, and application are summarized and presented. The review may be useful for medical professionals, and pharmacologists dealing with the development of novel drug delivery vehicles.
