Human activity recognition (HAR) based on sensor networks is an important research direction in the fields of pervasive computing and body area network. Existing researches often use statistical machine learning methods to manually extract and construct features of different motions. However, in the face of extremely fast-growing waveform data with no obvious laws, the traditional feature engineering methods are becoming more and more incapable. With the development of deep learning technology, we do not need to manually extract features and can improve the performance in complex human activity recognition problems. By migrating deep neural network experience in image recognition, we propose a deep learning model (InnoHAR) based on the combination of inception neural network and recurrent neural network. The model inputs the waveform data of multi-channel sensors end-to-end. Multi-dimensional features are extracted by inception-like modules by using various kernel-based convolution layers. Combined with GRU, modeling for time series features is realized, making full use of data characteristics to complete classification tasks. Through experimental verification on three most widely used public HAR datasets, our proposed method shows consistent superior performance and has good generalization performance, when compared with the state-of-the-art.

Near-ground localization is a special type of localization scenario that is widely considered in both academic and industry. In this communication, with considering the multipath condition in near-ground environments, we conducted field measurements and proposed an antenna height-dependent time of arrival (TOA) ranging error model. Experiment results show that TOA distance measurement errors accord with Gaussian distribution, and its mean and variance are directly related with antenna height and communication distance. Based on the proposed TOA ranging error model, Cramer-Rao lower bound under typical scenarios have been calculated, and localization performance simulation has been studied. The experiment results indicate that the proposed TOA ranging error model has significant theoretical and practical application values.

Human motion tracking could be viewed as a multi-target tracking problem towards numerous body joints. Inertial-measurement-unit-based human motion tracking technique stands out and has been widely used in body are network applications. However, it has been facing the tough problem of accumulative errors and drift. In this paper, we propose a multi-sensor hybrid method to solve this problem. Firstly, an inertial-measurement-unit and time-of-arrival fusion-based method is proposed to compensate the drift and accumulative errors caused by inertial sensors. Secondly, Cramér–Rao lower bound is derived in detail with consideration of both spatial and temporal related factors. Simulation results show that the proposed method in this paper has both spatial and temporal advantages, compared with traditional sole inertial or time-of-arrival-based tracking methods. Furthermore, proposed method is verified in 3D practical application scenarios. Compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, proposed fusion method shows better consistency and higher tracking accuracy, especially when moving direction changes. The proposed fusion method and comprehensive fundamental limits analysis conducted in this paper can provide a theoretical basis for further system design and algorithm analysis. Without the requirements of external anchors, the proposed method has good stability and high tracking accuracy, thus it is more suitable for wearable motion tracking applications.

The position is one of the foremost imperative properties of an object. The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) development has enabled the system to continuously decrease in size, reduce power consumption, and become more and more universal. Although IMU meets the real-time needs of the localization system, it faces accumulative error and drifting problems. This paper presents an error constraint enhanced particle filter algorithm using quantum particle swarm optimization (EC-QPF), which achieves high-precision position estimation of target tracking with IMU. First, we proposed a quantum particle swarm optimization-based resampling method taking the place of the traditional weight-based resampling method in the particle filter, which avoids the particle impoverishment problem and keeps the particles’ diversity. The theoretical foundation of error constraint was raised applied to enhance the performance of the proposed particle filter. The error constraint is established utilizing the known estimated center and confidence scale to achieve particle screening based on the geometrical position of particles. Numerical experimental results show that the proposed EC-QPF has a 67% improvement instead of other modified particle filters and more efficiently eliminates the cumulative error. Furthermore, higher accuracy and stability are obtained under the exact condition, demonstrating better performance than traditional particle filter methods.
