Infrared (IR) stealth with thermal management is highly desirable in military applications and astronomy. However, developing selective IR emitters with properties suitable for IR stealth and thermal management is challenging. In this study, we present the theoretical framework for a selective emitter based on an inverse-designed metasurface for IR stealth with thermal management. The emitter comprises an inverse-designed gold grating, a Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) dielectric layer, and a gold reflective layer. The hat-like function, which describes an ideal thermal selective emitter, is involved in the inverse design algorithm. The emitter exhibits high performance in IR stealth with thermal management, with the low emissivity (ɛ3–5 µm =0.17; ɛ8–14 µm =0.16) for dual-band atmospheric transmission windows and high emissivity (ɛ5–8 µm =0.85) for non-atmospheric windows. Moreover, the proposed selective emitter can realize tunable control of thermal radiation in the wavelength range of 3–14 µm by changing the crystallization fraction of GST. In addition, the polarization-insensitive structure supports strong selective emission at large angles (60°). Thus, the selective emitter has potential for IR stealth, thermal imaging, and mid-infrared multifunctional equipment.

The nanostructure composed of nanomaterials and subwavelength units offers flexible design freedom and outstanding advantages over conventional devices. In this paper, a multifunctional nanostructure with phase-change material (PCM) is proposed to achieve tunable infrared detection, radiation cooling and infrared (IR)-laser compatible camouflage. The structure is very simple and is modified from the classic metal–dielectric–metal (MIM) multilayer film structure. We innovatively composed the top layer of metals with slits, and introduced a non-volatile PCM Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) for selective absorption/radiation regulation. According to the simulation results, wide-angle and polarization-insensitive dual-band infrared detection is realized in the four-layer structure. The transformation from infrared detection to infrared stealth is realized in the five-layer structure, and laser stealth is realized in the atmospheric window by electromagnetic absorption. Moreover, better radiation cooling is realized in the non-atmospheric window. The proposed device can achieve more than a 50% laser absorption rate at 10.6 μm while ensuring an average infrared emissivity below 20%. Compared with previous works, our proposed multifunctional nanostructures can realize multiple applications with a compact structure only by changing the temperature. Such ultra-thin, integratable and multifunctional nanostructures have great application prospects extending to various fields such as electromagnetic shielding, optical communication and sensing.

Laser-guided detector and infrared detection have attracted increasing attention in a wide range of research fields, including multispectral detection, radiative cooling, and thermal management. Previously reported absorbers presented shortcomings of lacking either tunability or compatibility. In this study, a metamaterial perfect absorber based on a Helmholtz resonator and fractal structure is proposed, which realizes tunable perfect absorptivity (α1.06μm>0.99,α10.6μm>0.99) of guided-laser radar dual operating bands (1.06 µm and 10.6 µm) and a low infrared average emissivity (ε¯3−5μm=0.03,ε¯8−14μm=0.31) in two atmospheric windows for compatible camouflage. The proposed perfect absorber provides a dynamically tunable absorptivity without structural changes and can be applied to optical communication, military stealth or protection, and electromagnetic detection.

Ultra-compact multifunctional integrated photonic modules have great practical significance to photonic integrated circuits (PICs). However, the design effect and efficiency of the existing mainstream inverse design algorithms are incompetent when designing these modules. We analyze their shortcomings in this task, and propose a new, to our knowledge, inverse design algorithm named polygon search (PS) algorithm to address these problems. We utilize the PS algorithm to design an integrated dual-channel mode-conversion-crossing waveguide module. This module integrates three functions: interconversion between TE0 and TE1, interconversion between TE0 and TE2, and channel crossing within only a 4 μm×4 μm footprint, and its performance is verified by experimental testing. It not only greatly reduces the total footprint of many PICs but also greatly improves their fabricating robustness. Furthermore, we propose a PS-designed mode mixer and a PS-designed bending waveguide, and connect them with the integrated modules to form a four-channel crossing-mode-division-multiplexing system. This system can provide multiple modes on the basis of channel crossing and transmit the output signal in the same direction in parallel within a single output waveguide, which significantly increases the communication bandwidth and decreases the footprint of PICs. At last, we demonstrate the effect and efficiency advantages of the PS algorithm over several mainstream inverse design algorithms by a comprehensive contrast experiment and explain these advantages in theory from several perspectives.

The modulation of thermal radiation is essential for advanced photonic applications, offering a novel perspective for information carriers. However, current carriers are limited to a few discrete radiation states at isolated time points and cannot capture the entire dynamic process along the full temporal axis, resulting in substantial information loss. Here, we propose and experimentally validate a novel spatiotemporal modulation strategy that dynamically tailors emissivity across the entire temporal domain, where gentle and uniform modulation of atomic configurations enables the creation of entirely novel permittivity libraries. To realize flexible thermal radiation tailoring, we utilize an Ag–In 3 SbTe 2 (IST) interface atomic rearrangement metamaterial (ARM). As a dynamic optical control platform, ARM exhibits continuous spectral modulation with remarkably high amplitudes (64.74% in the 3- to 5-μm band and 73.94% in the 8- to 14-μm band), together with rich variations across the temporal domain to realize tailored infrared emissivity and infrared information encryption. This work establishes a unified framework for continuous, atomic-scale spatiotemporal control of thermal radiation, opening new pathways for spectral modulation and photonic information regulation in the time domain.

Based on the novel concept of a fully-digitized module, we employ a forward-designed-assisted inverse design method to design a nonvolatile reconfigurable mode generator and an optical circulator, assisted with a phase change material. The mode generator can selectively output different modes. The fundamental transverse electric (TE 0 ) or TE 1 modes can be selectively generated when the TE 0 mode is launched in the input port. The mode generator with an effective footprint of 2.4 μm × 16 μm exhibits the simulated insertion losses of less than 1.0 dB and the simulated crosstalks of lower than –19.0 dB for both the TE 0 and TE 1 modes from 1540 nm to 1560 nm. The optical circulator enables the light unidirectional propagation. Photons can be precisely routed from each input port to one adjacent output port in clockwise or counterclockwise directions. The simulated results indicate that the circulator with an effective footprint of 24 μm × 24 μm, can provide both the simulated insertion losses of less than 0.8 dB and the simulated crosstalks of lower than –16.3 dB from 1540 nm to 1560 nm in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. The fabrication tolerances caused by the expansion or contraction of the etched pattern contour are also investigated. In principle, the proposed frameworks can be extended to an arbitrary number of ports for designing mode generators and optical circulators.
