Nowadays, computer science increasingly uses formal methods to enhance understanding of complex software systems and to reason about their behavior with respect to a formal specification. To let future generations of software developers and engineers profit from these exciting developments, however, it is necessary to adequately educate and train them in the basics of formal logic and formal language semantics. However, preciously few software tools do exist that substantially aid this educational process. Because the semantics is an integral part of a formal definition of a programming language, we have prepared a package of modules, that help us and to students to understand the most popular semantic method - structural operational semantics. The first module translates a program written in a programming language to abstract machine code, the second module makes reverse translation from code to program source text and the third one emulates stepwise execution of abstract machine code. Our package can be easily extended for other semantic methods.

Category is a mathematical structure consisting of objects and morphisms between objects with some specific properties. Categories examine in abstract way the properties of particular mathematical concepts by formalizing them as collections of objects and morphisms. Categorical structures are widely used in computer science for exact mathematical modeling. This paper highlights the most typical use of categories for constructing the model of part of differential calculus by using special category named arrow category; and codomain and domain functors.

Identifying and classifying the commonness of errors made by novices learning to write computer programs has long been of interest to both: researchers and educators. When teachers understand the nature of these errors and how students correct them, instruction can be more effective. Some errors occur more frequently than others. In this paper, we examine the most common programming errors made by beginning first-year high school gifted mathematics students in Mathematical High School. Notwithstanding the extensive coverage of these error types in lectures and learning materials, we found that these errors still occur when students write programs. Our results suggest that students who habitually make all common errors have lower grades, but even excellent students make logical errors in loop conditions. Therefore, we advise more practice in logical reasoning for novice programmers and an introduction to formal semantics.

Computer-aided visualization provides meaningful insight into geography teaching, which helps improve comprehension. With dynamic geometry software (DGS), a teacher can easily create interactive mathematical learning materials. To fully benefit from DGS applied to subjects other than mathematics, their functionality must be extended with features which are inherent to those subjects. We demonstrate how a DGS, extended with components, can be applied to geography teaching. For this purpose we have developed SLGeometry, an experimental platform for dynamic geometry, which supports extensibility via components. Through experiments, we confirmed the benefits of our approach in practice.
