Jochen Mattner is currently affiliated as a Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Infection Immunology and a specialist in Microbiology, Virology and Infection Epidemiology at the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. He studied medicine and received his MD from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in 2001. After graduation he completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Chicago and obtained a tenured faculty appointment at the Cincinnati Children´s Hospital before returning to his alma mater.
His research focuses on the interactions between commensal microbiota and the mucosal immune system. In particular, his research group studies the pathogenesis of many immune-mediated diseases of the gastrointestinal system, including inflammatory bowel disease, Type 1 diabetes and hepatitis.
Jochen Mattner is an author for many high-ranking journals and has obtained many national and international awards. He is also a member of the German Society of Immunology and the German Society of Microbiology and Hygiene.
