The effects of typical machining errors on the dynamic features of rod-fastened rotor bearing system (RBS) are studied in this paper. Three micron-sized machining errors are considered in a three-dimensional (3D) rod-fastened model. The static effects of machining errors are investigated by applying finite element method. Results demonstrate that machining errors not only bring about mass eccentricity but also cause obvious rotor bending due to large pretightening force. Then, nonlinear dynamic features such as stability and bifurcation are analyzed by using target-shooting technique, track-following method, and Floquet theory. Analysis data indicate that rotor bending originated from machining errors reduces the system stability evidently. It is also observed that the vibration value continues to go up after critical speed as rotating speed increases. It is a particular property compared with integral rotor. It explains the reason why the machining precision of rod-fastened rotor is much higher than that of the corresponding integral rotor to some extent. Moreover, differences between machining errors are compared and the results show that the machining precision of axial assembly interfaces should be paid more attention in the rod-fastened rotor design.

Interfacial cutting faults on assembly surfaces are considered in a three-dimensional (3D) disk-bolt rotor system. The traditional finite element method is used to establish the 3D model of faulted disk-bolt rotor. A contact algorithm is applied to calculate the static features of this combined rotor. It is revealed that interfacial cutting faults produce rotor bending which is gradually strengthened as rotational speed increases besides disk’s mass eccentricity. The 3D dynamic equations of a faulted disk-bolt rotor system include these cutting faults’ static influences. The nonlinear dynamic properties are investigated by Poincaré mapping, Newton iteration and a prediction-correction algorithm. As a result, the rotor bending due to cutting faults reduces the global stability of the complicated rotor and enlarges the vibration amplitude obviously. This speed-variant bending also decides the feature that rotor vibration increases again after critical speed no matter whether dynamic balance is carried out. The maximum allowable fault depth is obtained and it gives an explanation as to why the machining precision of assembly surfaces should be strictly controlled in the disk-bolt rotor. Generally, this paper originally tries to provide a feasible approach to consider a 3D interfacial cutting fault with specific shape and to analyze the static–dynamic coupling characteristics for a disk-bolt rotor.

Different from the crack on the rotating shaft, the crack on the bolt, which is a connecting part of the bolt-disk combined rotor, is a kind of local defect. The local crack on the bolt under high pretension is always in open state, and it increases the overall vibration of the combined rotor significantly in practice. This paper studies the modeling of the crack on the bolt and nonlinear dynamic behaviors of the cracked bolt-disk rotor system. The circumferential bolts with a transverse open crack are treated as several bar elements under the assumption that each bolt has the same original tensile extension length. The cracked correction coefficient is introduced to describe the decreasing amount of bolt's tension due to crack. After this coefficient is obtained according to finite element method, the stiffness matrix of circumferential bolts with crack is built based on total potential energy. The dynamic model consists of a time-independent stiffness matrix for perfect bolts, a time-variant reductive stiffness, and an additional moment. As a result, the crack in bolt reduces rotor's nonlinear stability and leads to greater vibration and fluctuation. In addition, crack depth has much larger influence than crack location on the dynamic behaviors.

The rotor system supported by rolling bearings usually provides a resonance effect due to the nonlinearity of bearings. In this paper, the causes of these anomalous resonance effects are discussed by establishing coupling dynamic model of the flexible rotor-roller bearings system. The 4-degrees of freedom (DOF) Timoshenko finite element and the free interface modal synthesis technique are used to model the elastic rotor. Then, a piece-wise flexible rotor model coupling with a 5-DOF dynamic bearing model is obtained by fixing the inner race to rotor. And waterfall plots are mainly obtained using the method of adaptive Runge-Kutta. Comparisons are made between the simulated response of the rotor-simplified bearing and rotor-bearing coupling models. Firstly, the vibration of cage can cause supercritical anomaly vibration except for the subcritical vibration induced by the variable compliance vibration. Secondly, the vibration amplitude of the coupling model is lower than the rotor-nonlinear springs model.

The stability and bifurcation of a flexible rod-fastening rotor bearing system with a transverse open crack in a fastening rod are investigated. The nonlinear dynamic model of a cracked rod-fastening rotor system is established based on the finite element method. A methodology is introduced where shooting method, path-following technique, and Floquet theory are combined for determining the periodic solutions and stability margins of the system. The effects of crack depth and mass eccentricities on the system are studied by numerical simulations. Results show the system stability will reduce due to the presence of crack, two saddlebacks occur on the periodic-doubling borderline whose bottom location corresponds to the two resonant peak of bearing node, and effects of the crack and mass eccentricity play a dominant position in different conditions respectively. Comparisons between the cracked rotor system and the intact ones referred in the literature indicate that some special characteristics of cracked rod-fastening rotor system in motion orbits and frequency components can be used to detect the presence of crack and its depth.

The stability and bifurcation of a flexible 3D rotor system are investigated in this paper. The rotor is discretized by 3D elements and reduced by using component mode synthesis. Periodic motions and stability margins are obtained by using the shooting method and path-following technique, and the local stability of the periodic motions is determined by using the Floquet theory. Comparisons indicate that 3D and 1D systems have a general resemblance in the bifurcation characteristics while mass eccentricity and rotating speed are changed. For both systems, the orbit size of the periodic motions has the same order of magnitude, and the vibration response has identical frequency components when typical bifurcations occur. The stress distribution and location of the maximum stress spot are determined by the bending mode of the rotor. The type of 3D element has a slight effect on the stability and bifurcation of the rotor system. Generally, this paper presents a feasible method for analyzing the stability and bifurcation of complex rotors without much structural simplification.
