Brain MR images are the most suitable method for detecting chronic nerve diseases such as brain tumors, strokes, dementia, and multiple sclerosis. They are also used as the most sensitive method in evaluating diseases of the pituitary gland, brain vessels, eye, and inner ear organs. Many medical image analysis methods based on deep learning techniques have been proposed for health monitoring and diagnosis from brain MRI images. CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) are a sub-branch of deep learning and are often used to analyze visual information. Common uses include image and video recognition, suggestive systems, image classification, medical image analysis, and natural language processing. In this study, a new modular deep learning model was created to retain the existing advantages of known transfer learning methods (DenseNet, VGG16, and basic CNN architectures) in the classification process of MR images and eliminate their disadvantages. Open-source brain tumor images taken from the Kaggle database were used. For the training of the model, two types of splitting were utilized. First, 80% of the MRI image dataset was used in the training phase and 20% in the testing phase. Secondly, 10-fold cross-validation was used. When the proposed deep learning model and other known transfer learning methods were tested on the same MRI dataset, an improvement in classification performance was obtained, but an increase in processing time was observed.

Diabetes is a long-lasting disease triggered by expanded sugar levels in human blood and can affect various organs if left untreated. It contributes to heart disease, kidney issues, damaged nerves, damaged blood vessels, and blindness. Timely disease prediction can save precious lives and enable healthcare advisors to take care of the conditions. Most diabetic patients know little about the risk factors they face before diagnosis. Nowadays, hospitals deploy basic information systems, which generate vast amounts of data that cannot be converted into proper/useful information and cannot be used to support decision making for clinical purposes. There are different automated techniques available for the earlier prediction of disease. Ensemble learning is a data analysis technique that combines multiple techniques into a single optimal predictive system to evaluate bias and variation, and to improve predictions. Diabetes data, which included 17 variables, were gathered from the UCI repository of various datasets. The predictive models used in this study include AdaBoost, Bagging, and Random Forest, to compare the precision, recall, classification accuracy, and F1-score. Finally, the Random Forest Ensemble Method had the best accuracy (97%), whereas the AdaBoost and Bagging algorithms had lower accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-scores.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an innovative technology with billions of sensors in various IoT applications. Important elements used in the IoT are sensors that collect data for desired analyses. The IoT and sensors are very important in smart cities, smart agriculture, smart education, healthcare systems, and other applications. The healthcare system uses the IoT to meet global health challenges, and the newest example is COVID-19. Demand has increased during COVID-19 for healthcare to reach patients remotely and digitally at their homes. The IoT properly monitors patients using an interconnected network to overcome the issues of healthcare services. The aim of this paper is to discuss different applications, technologies, and challenges related to the healthcare system. Different databases were searched using keywords in Google Scholar, Elsevier, PubMed, ACM, ResearchGate, Scopus, Springer, etc. This paper discusses, highlights, and identifies the applications of IoT healthcare systems to provide research directions to healthcare, academia, and researchers to overcome healthcare system challenges. Hence, the IoT can be beneficial by providing better treatments using the healthcare system efficiently. In this paper, the integration of the IoT with smart technologies not only improves computation, but will also allow the IoT to be pervasive, profitable, and available anytime and anywhere. Finally, some future directions and challenges are discussed, along with useful suggestions that can assist the IoT healthcare system during COVID-19 and in a severe pandemic.

Monkeypox disease is caused by a virus that causes lesions on the skin and has been observed on the African continent in the past years. The fatal consequences caused by virus infections after the COVID pandemic have caused fear and panic among the public. As a result of COVID reaching the pandemic dimension, the development and implementation of rapid detection methods have become important. In this context, our study aims to detect monkeypox disease in case of a possible pandemic through skin lesions with deep-learning methods in a fast and safe way. Deep-learning methods were supported with transfer learning tools and hyperparameter optimization was provided. In the CNN structure, a hybrid function learning model was developed by customizing the transfer learning model together with hyperparameters. Implemented on the custom model MobileNetV3-s, EfficientNetV2, ResNET50, Vgg19, DenseNet121, and Xception models. In our study, AUC, accuracy, recall, loss, and F1-score metrics were used for evaluation and comparison. The optimized hybrid MobileNetV3-s model achieved the best score, with an average F1-score of 0.98, AUC of 0.99, accuracy of 0.96, and recall of 0.97. In this study, convolutional neural networks were used in conjunction with optimization of hyperparameters and a customized hybrid function transfer learning model to achieve striking results when a custom CNN model was developed. The custom CNN model design we have proposed is proof of how successfully and quickly the deep learning methods can achieve results in classification and discrimination.

The vital sign monitoring through Impulse Radio Ultra-Wide Band (IR-UWB) radar provides continuous assessment of a patient’s respiration and heart rates in a non-invasive manner. In this paper, IR UWB radar is used for monitoring respiration and the human heart rate. The breathing and heart rate frequencies are extracted from the signal reflected from the human body. A Kalman filter is applied to reduce the measurement noise from the vital signal. An algorithm is presented to separate the heart rate signal from the breathing harmonics. An auto-correlation based technique is applied for detecting random body movements (RBM) during the measurement process. Experiments were performed in different scenarios in order to show the validity of the algorithm. The vital signs were estimated for the signal reflected from the chest, as well as from the back side of the body in different experiments. The results from both scenarios are compared for respiration and heartbeat estimation accuracy.

In this study, we classify digits written in mid-air using hand gestures. Impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar sensors are used for data acquisition, with three radar sensors placed in a triangular geometry. Conventional radar-based gesture recognition methods use whole raw data matrices or a group of features for gesture classification using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or other machine learning algorithms. However, if the training and testing data differ in distance, orientation, hand shape, hand size, or even gesture speed or the radar setup environment, these methods become less accurate. To develop a more robust gesture recognition method, we propose not using raw data for the CNN classifier, but instead employing the hand’s mid-air trajectory for classification. The hand trajectory has a stereotypical shape for a given digit, regardless of the hand’s orientation or speed, making its classification easy and robust. Our proposed method consists of three stages: signal preprocessing, hand motion localization, and tracking and transforming the trajectory data into an image to classify it using a CNN. Our proposed method outperforms conventional approaches because it is robust to changes in orientation, distance, and hand shape and size. Moreover, this method does not require building a huge training database of digits drawn by different users in different orientations; rather, we can use training databases already available in the image processing field. Overall, the proposed mid-air handwritten digit recognition system provides a user-friendly and accurate mid-air handwriting modality that does not place restrictions on users.
