Rapid and effective access to the spatiotemporal patterns and evolutionary trends of the regional eco-environment is key to regional environment protection and planning. Based on the Google Earth Engine platform, we use 165 Landsat images from the summer and autumn seasons (May–November) of 2000, 2010, and 2018 as data sources to calculate the RSEI, which represents the quality of the eco-environment, and then analyze the factors influencing the spatial heterogeneity of the eco-environment and the relationship between eco-environment and land-use changes based on RSEI. The results showed the following: (1) From 2000 to 2018, the overall ecological environment quality of the Taihu Lake Basin showed a stage of rapid decline (2000–2010) and a stage of slow decline (2010–2018). (2) The factors were ranked in order of their explanatory power for the spatial heterogeneity of the RSEI: land-use (0.594) > population density (0.418) > slope (0.309) > elevation (0.308) > GDP (0.304) > temperature (0.233) > precipitation (0.208). An interactive effect was found for each factor of the RSEI, which is mainly represented by a mutual enhancement. (3) From 2000 to 2010, the rapid urban expansion was the main reason for the deterioration of ecological quality. From 2010 to 2018, urban expansion slowed down, and the trend of ecological quality deterioration was effectively curbed. Therefore, promoting the intensive use of land and reducing construction land expansion are key to ensuring sustainable regional socio-economic development.

The water yield module of the InVEST model was used to estimate the water yield and its temporal and spatial variation characteristics in Shaanxi Province from 2000 to 2020. Moreover, the influences of future precipitation changes and land use changes on water yield in Shaanxi Province were discussed in the 2030s and 2050s. The results showed that: (1) from 2000 to 2020, the multi-year average water yields in northern Shaanxi, Guanzhong and southern Shaanxi were 33.23 × 108 m3, 73.75 × 108 m3, and 280.63 × 108 m3, respectively; (2) the spatial pattern of water yield depth displayed a characteristic of gradually increasing from north to south; (3) under the precipitation change scenario, the water yield under different emission scenarios wa s in the order of RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) 8.5 > RCP2.6 > RCP4.5; under the land use change scenario, the water yield depth of Shaanxi Province as a whole and in the three regions in the 2030s and 2050s showed a decline. The research results can provide scientific support for water ecological security, water resources, and regional high-quality sustainable development in Shaanxi Province.

As the largest inland saltwater lake in China, Qinghai Lake plays an important role in regional sustainable development and ecological environment protection. In this study, we adopted a spatial downscaling model for mapping lake water at 10 m resolution through integrating Sentinel-2 and Landsat data, which was applied to map the water extent of Qinghai Lake from 1991 to 2020. This was further combined with the Hydroweb water level dataset to establish an area-level relationship to acquire the 30-year water level and water volume. Then, the driving factors of its water dynamics were analyzed based on the grey system theory. It was found that the lake area, water level, and water volume decreased from 1991 to 2004, but then showed an increasing trend afterwards. The lake area ranges from 4199.23 to 4494.99 km2. The water level decreased with a speed of ~0.05 m/a before 2004 and then increased with a speed of 0.22 m/a thereafter. Correspondingly, the water volume declined by 5.29 km3 in the first 13 years, and rapidly increased by 15.57 km3 thereafter. The correlation between climatic factors and the water volume of Qinghai Lake is significant. Precipitation has the greatest positive impact on the water volume variation with the relational grade of 0.912, while evaporation has a negative impact.

Runoff erosion capacity has significant effects on the spatial distribution of soil erosion and soil losses. But few studies have been conducted to evaluate these effects in the Loess Plateau. In this study, an adjusted SWAT model was used to simulate the hydrological process of the Xihe River basin from 1993 to 2012. The spatial variabilities between runoff erosion capacity and underlying surface factors were analyzed by combining spatial gradient analysis and GWR (Geographically Weighted Regression) analysis. The results show that the spatial distribution of runoff erosion capacity in the studying area has the following characteristics: strong in the north, weak in the south, strong in the west, and weak in the east. Topographic factors are the dominant factors of runoff erosion in the upper reaches of the basin. Runoff erosion capacity becomes stronger with the increase of altitude and gradient. In the middle reaches area, the land with low vegetation coverage, as well as arable land, show strong runoff erosion ability. In the downstream areas, the runoff erosion capacity is weak because of better underlying surface conditions. Compared with topographic and vegetation factors, soil factors have less impact on runoff erosion. The red clay and mountain soil in this region have stronger runoff erosion capacities compared with other types of soils, with average runoff modulus of 1.79 × 10−3 m3/s·km2 and 1.68 × 10−3 m3/s·km2, respectively, and runoff erosion power of 0.48 × 10−4 m4/s·km2 and 0.34 × 10−4 m4/s·km2, respectively. The runoff erosion capacity of the alluvial soil is weak, with an average runoff modulus of 0.96 × 10−3 m3/s·km2 and average erosion power of 0.198 × 10−4 m4/s·km2. This study illustrates the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of hydraulic erosion in the Xihe River Basin from the perspective of energy. It contributes to the purposeful utilization of water and soil resources in the Xihe River Basin and provides a theoretical support for controlling the soil erosion in the Hilly-gully region of the Loess Plateau.

Introduction: The Danjiang River Basin has experienced significant alterations to its runoff patterns in recent years, primarily as a result of climate change and anthropogenic activities. Methods: This study aims to investigate these factors’ influence on the basin’s runoff between 1960 and 2016 using the Mann–Kendall (M-K) test and Accumulative Anomaly Curve (AAC) to assess the abrupt change characteristics of runoff. Furthermore, the study evaluates the effects of climate and anthropogenic factors on runoff evolution using eight independent Budyko hypotheses. Results: The findings indicate that annual precipitation in the basin remained stable (P > 0.1), while annual runoff decreases significantly to −4.08 mm/a (P < 0.05) and the annual potential evapotranspiration slightly decreases to −1.76 mm/a (P < 0.05). The study also reveales that the reduction of runoff is primarily attributable to anthropogenic activities, contributing between 133.66 and 147.50%, while climate change contributes between −33.66 and −47.50%.Discussion: The increased vegetation cover in the basin is identified as the primary cause of the reduction in runoff production and increase in evapotranspiration. Additionally, the construction of hydraulic engineering facilities in the basin is found to have had some impact on reducing runoff. These findings have significant implications for water resource management and soil and water conservation in the Danjiang River Basin.

In the context of the continuous change in global climate, the frequency and intensity of drought and heatwaves are increasing. This study took the extreme drought event in southwest China in 2009/2010 as a case study. Based on the sunlight-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), we explored the effects of high-temperature weather on the photosynthetic efficiency, the vegetation responses to drought in two ecosystems, and the differences in influencing factors. The results showed a disproportionate change between the vegetation productivity represented by SIF and the greenness symbolized by the leaf area index (LAI). The response of photosynthetic efficiency to drought was significantly inequitable between the grassland and cropland. The geodetector showed that grassland ecosystems with more superficial canopy structures were more susceptible to high temperature. The correlation between the Photosynthesis efficiency index (PEI) and temperature (T) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) of the grassland ecosystem was above 0.6. This study suggests that drought exacerbates the disproportionate change between vegetation productivity and greenness, and grasslands are more vulnerable to drought. The result is helpful for ecosystem management.
