Nina Van Goethem obtained a Master's degree in both Biomedical Sciences (2015) and Epidemiology (2017) at the University of Antwerp. She specialized in infectious diseases, and completed internships at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Antwerp), the Medical Research Council Unit (The Gambia), and the Agency of Public Health in Antwerp (Agentschap Zorg en Gezondheid). She then pursued a PhD in Public Health at UCLouvain (under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Annie Robert), while based at Sciensano (under supervision of Prof. Dr. Herman Van Oyen), on the integration of pathogen genomic data to support infectious disease surveillance and epidemiological investigations, which she obtained in 2022. Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020, she has been closely involved in Sciensano's crisis team, and coordinated the hospital Surge Capacity surveillance. Currently, she is working at Sciensano's Public Health Genomics unit as an epidemiologist.
