Ana Chegão holds a MSc in Biochemistry and is currently finishing her PhD at Chronic Diseases Research Center (CEDOC) at NOVA Medical School. Ana graduated in Biochemistry in 2011 from Universidade da Beira Interior, where she also pursued her Master's degree in Biochemistry in 2013. Since September 2016 onwards, Ana has been working under the supervision of Professor Hugo Vicente Miranda at CEDOC - NMS, studying the interplay between neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes. Particularly, Ana is dedicated to investigate the underlying role of glycation in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and to explore the potential of anti-diabetics as novel therapeutic approach to ameliorate alpha-synuclein pathology. The results from her research have been published is several peer-reviewed articles and have been presented in more than 20 posters and more than 10 oral communications at both national and international meetings and congresses. Ana was awarded with 8 honorable prizes.
The research interests of Ana are focused on neurodegeneration and the role of metabolic disorders on brain health and disease. She aims to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms that drive neuropathological events in synucleinopathies and to identify novel neuronal targets and to assess their role on neurodegenerative disorders.
