Accurate terrestrial water storage (TWS) estimation is important to evaluate the situation of the water resources over the Yangtze River Basin (YRB). This study exploits the TWS observation from the new temporal gravity field model, HUST-Grace2016 (Huazhong University of Science and Technology), which is developed by a new low-frequency noise processing strategy. A novel GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) post-processing approach is proposed to enhance the quality of the TWS estimate, and the improved TWS is used to characterize the drought and flood events over the YRB. The HUST-Grace2016-derived TWS presents good agreement with the CSR (Center for Space Research) mascon solution as well as the PCR-GLOBWB (PCRaster Global Water Balance) hydrological model. Particularly, our solution provides remarkable performance in identifying the extreme climate events e.g., flood and drought over the YRB and its sub-basins. The comparison between GRACE-derived TWS variations and the MODIS-derived (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) inundated area variations is then conducted. The analysis demonstrates that the terrestrial reflectance data can provide an alternative way of cross-comparing and validating TWS information in Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake, with a correlation coefficient of 0.77 and 0.70, respectively. In contrast, the correlation is only 0.10 for Tai Lake, indicating the limitation of cross-comparison between MODIS and GRACE data. In addition, for the first time, the NCEP/NCAR (National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research) vertical velocity data is incorporated with GRACE TWS in the exploration of the climate-induced hydrological activities. The good agreement between non-seasonal NCEP/NCAR vertical velocities and non-seasonal GRACE TWSs is found in flood years (2005, 2010, 2012 and 2016) and drought years (2006, 2011 and 2013). The evidence shown in this study may contribute to the analysis of the mechanism of climate impacts on the YRB.

Yunnan province in China has rich forest resources but high forest fire frequency. Therefore, a better understanding of the relationship between climate change and forest fires in this region is important for forest fire prevention. This study used the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) terrestrial water storage change (TWSC) data to analyze the influence of climate change on forest fires in the region during 2003–2016. To improve the accuracy and reliability of GRACE TWSC data, we used the generalized three-cornered hat (GTCH) and the least square method to fuse TWSC data from six GRACE solutions. The spatiotemporal variation of forest fires during 2003–2016 was investigated using burned area data. Then, the relationship between burned area and hydrological and climatic factors was analyzed. The results indicate that more than 90% of burned areas are located in northwestern and southern Yunnan (NW and S). On the seasonal scale, forest fires are mainly concentrated in January–April (dry season) and the burned area is negatively correlated with precipitation (correlation coefficient r = −0.83 (NW) and −0.51 (S)), relative humidity (r = −0.79 (NW) and −0.92 (S)), GRACE TWSC (r = −0.57 (NW) and −0.73 (S)) and evapotranspiration (r = −0.90 (NW) and −0.35 (S)). However, the burned area has no significant correlations with the above four factors on the interannual scale. The composite analysis suggests that the extreme climate affects precipitation, evapotranspiration and TWSC in this region, thereby changing water storage of the air in this region, leading to the formation of an environment prone to forest fires. Such conditions have led to an increase in the burned area in the above region. We also found that the difference between TWSC in high- and low-fire years is much greater than the precipitation in the same period. The above results show that GRACE satellites can detect the influence of climate change on forest fires in Yunnan province.

During temporal gravity field model determination, the kinematic empirical parameters are mainly designed to remove the strong bias, drift, and 1‐cycle per revolution variations in range‐rates. In practice, two different strategies are commonly used to process these empirical parameters. One is to determine the empirical parameters before solving spherical harmonic coefficients, called Pure Predetermined Strategy (PPS). The other is to simultaneously determine the empirical parameters and spherical harmonic coefficients, called Pure Simultaneous Strategy (PSS). In this study, apart from these two strategies, a novel processing strategy called Filter Predetermined Strategy (FPS) is also discussed. These different processing strategies may result in different solutions. With the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Level 1B data spanning 2005 to 2010, the impacts of different kinematic empirical parameters processing strategies were assessed in detail. The numerical results indicate that (1) using three different processing strategies and their hybrids can determine the temporal gravity field model, while (2) the solutions via PPS present apparent temporal signal attenuation, which is approximately 15% lower in annual amplitude in Amazon River Basin, and 15% lower in yearly trend in Greenland, and (3) the signal‐to‐noise ratios of the solutions via PPS are generally smaller than those of the solutions via FPS and PSS, and (4) the performance of FPS is superior in terms of postfit range‐rates, but compatible with PSS in terms of other cross comparisons. According to comprehensive comparison results in terms of temporal signals and noise, the performance of our Huazhong University of Science and Technology models determined via FPS is in excellent accordance with other representative temporal gravity field models, such as CSR RL05, GFZ RL05a, and JPL RL05.

Surface mass variations inferred from the Global Positioning System (GPS), and observed by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GFO) complement each other in terms of spatial and temporal coverage. This paper presents an analysis of regional surface mass variations inverted from GPS vertical displacements under different density distributions of GPS stations, and compares the GPS-derived mass variations with GRACE/GFO inversion results in spatial and temporal domains. To this end, GPS vertical displacement data from a total of 85 permanent GPS stations of the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC), the latest GRACE/GFO RL06 spherical harmonic (SH) solutions and GRACE RL06 mascon solutions are used to investigate surface mass variations in four regions or basins, including the Yunnan Province (YNP), Min River Basin (MRB), Jialing River Basin (JLRB), and Wu River Basin (WRB) in Southwest China. Our results showed that the spatial distributions and seasonal characteristics of GPS-derived mass change time series agree well with those from GRACE/GFO observations, especially in regions with relatively dense distributions of GPS stations (e.g., in the YNP and MRB), but there are still obvious discrepancies between the GPS and GRACE/GFO results. Scale factor methods (both basin-scaled and pixel-scaled) were employed to reduce the amplitude discrepancies between GPS and GRACE/GFO results. The results also showed that the one-year gap between the GRACE and GFO missions can be bridged by scaled GPS-derived mass change time series in the four studied regions, especially in the YNP and MRB regions (with relatively dense distributions of GPS stations).

The Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China, is famous for its ecological and economic importance as well as frequent flood characteristics. In this study, multiple satellite remote sensing observations (e.g., GRACE, MODIS, Altimetry, and TRMM), hydrological models, and in situ data are used to characterize the flood phenomena over the Poyang Lake basin between 2003 and 2016. To improve the accuracy of the terrestrial water storage (TWS) estimates over the Poyang Lake basin, a modified forward-modeling method is introduced in the GRACE processing. The method is evaluated using the contaminated noise onboard observations for the first time. The results in both spectral and spatial domains infer a good performance of the method on the suppression of high-frequency noise while reducing the signal loss. After applying forward-modeling method, the TWS derived from the GRACE spherical harmonic coefficients presents a comparable performance with the solution derived from the newly released CSR Release05 mascon product over the Poyang Lake basin. The flood events in 2010 and 2016 are identified from the positive anomalies in non-seasonal TWSs derived by GRACE and hydrological models. The flood signatures also coincide with the largest inundated areas estimated from MODIS data, and the observed areas in 2010 and 2016 are 3370.3 km2 (30% higher than the long-term mean) and 3445.0 km2 (33% higher), respectively. The water levels in the Hukou station exceed the warning water level for 25 days in 2010 and 28 days in 2016. These continuous warning-exceeded water levels also imply the severe flood events, which are primarily driven by the local plenteous precipitation in the rainy season (1528 mm in 2010, 1522 mm in 2016).

Evapotranspiration (ET) is a critical component of the water cycle, and it plays an important role in global water exchange and energy flow. However, accurate estimation and numerical simulation of regional ET remain difficult. In this work, based on the water balance equation, an improved regional ET estimating approach was developed by using Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), daily precipitation, and discharge data. Firstly, the method and algorithm were validated by simulation study. Compared with ET estimated from previous methods, the result derived from our method present significant improvement, with the correlation coefficient great than 0.9. Secondly, using our improved method, the spatially averaged ET over the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) was computed for the period 2003–2013. The ET estimations were in good consistency with different ET products, and the mean annual value of ET estimation over the YRB was close to the difference between precipitation and discharge over the YRB. Thirdly, the comparison between ET estimation and independent estimates of meteorological factors and soil moisture over the entire YRB were conducted through the entire YRB. The analysis indicated that near-surface temperature, as responsive to atmospheric demand, was the limiting factor of time variation of ET, with the correlation coefficients of 0.69. We also analyzed the relationship between the mean annual ET and atmospheric demand for seven subcatchments of the YRB, which indicated that the spatial distribution characteristics of ET estimated by our method were in accord with atmospheric conditions. These results indicated the good performance of our improved approach in estimating ET variations over the YRB. It also demonstrates the applicability of GRACE to the analysis of hydrological features such as regional ET.
