We describe the technologically simple route for the fabrication of the superhydrophobic coatings on top of wrought magnesium alloy MA8 based on nanosecond laser processing followed by the chemical vapor deposition of fluorosilane. The chemical and phase composition, surface morphologies, and variation of the coating wettability during prolonged contact with 0.5 NaCl solution or with salt aerosol were characterized using X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy measurements, and the wettability analysis. The as-prepared coatings demonstrate corrosion current of more than eight orders of magnitude lower, while after 30 days of sample immersion into corrosive solution, the current was four orders of magnitude lower than that obtained for a polished sample which was for only 2 h in contact with electrolyte. The mechanisms of the protective activity of fabricated coatings were discussed.

The interest in magnesium-based materials is promoted by their biocompatibility, their bioresorbability, and their recently discovered antibacterial potential. Until now, the widespread use of magnesium alloys in different corrosive environments was inhibited by their weakly controllable degradation rate and poorly understood microbiologically induced corrosion behavior. To better understand the degradation and usability of magnesium-based alloys, in this study we have fabricated superhydrophobic coatings on a magnesium-based alloy, and analyzed the behavior of this alloy in bacterial dispersions of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae cells in phosphate-buffered saline. It was shown that the immersion of such coatings in bacterial dispersions causes notable changes in the morphology of the samples, dependent on the bacterial dispersion composition and the type of bacterial strain. The interaction of the superhydrophobic coatings with the bacterial dispersion caused the formation of biofilms and sodium polyphosphate films, which provided enhanced barrier properties in magnesium dissolution and hence in dispersion medium alkalization, eventually leading to the inhibition of magnesium substrate degradation. The electrochemical data obtained for superhydrophobic samples in continuous contact with corrosive bacterial dispersions for 48 h indicated a high level of anticorrosion protection.

Fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings for magnesium alloys is in high demand for various industrial applications. Such coatings not only extend the service life of metal structures, but also impart additional useful functional properties to the coated surface. In this study, we show that nanosecond laser processing of long, thin stripes of magnesium alloys followed by the deposition of a hydrophobic agent onto the magnesium oxide layer is a simple, convenient, and easily reproducible method for obtaining superhydrophobic surfaces with property gradient along the sample. The mechanism of the gradient in wettability and electrochemical properties of the magnesium alloy surface is discussed based on the high-temperature growth of magnesium oxide and its following degradation. The latter is related to the development of internal stresses and the formation of cracks and pores within the oxide layer at prolonged exposure to high temperatures during the interaction of a laser beam with the substrate. The effect of heating during laser processing of magnesium materials with limited sizes on the protective properties of the forming coatings is elucidated.

Hydrophilic or superhydrophilic materials in some cases are considered to be potentially icephobic due to a low ice-adhesion strength to such materials. Here, the evolution of the properties of a superhydrophilic aluminum alloy with hierarchical roughness, fabricated by laser processing, was studied in contact with water during prolonged cyclic variation in temperature. It was shown that the chemical interaction of rough alumina with water molecules caused the substitution of the surface oxide by polymorphic crystalline gibbsite or bayerite phases while preserving hierarchical roughness. Due to such substitution, mechanical durability was notably compromised. Thus, in contrast to the superhydrophobic laser-processed samples, the superhydrophilic samples targeted on the exploitation in an open atmosphere as a material with anti-icing properties cannot be considered as the industrially attractive way to combat icing.

A new approach to studying the strength of an adhesion contact is presented. This approach provides statistically reliable results and is based on the measurement of centrifugal force that causes a shear of ice on a solid surface. The developed experimental setup is employed to study the effects of environmental temperature and duration of ice incubation after crystallization on the measured adhesion strength for samples with different wettabilities. A noticeable temperature dependence is revealed for the shear strength of the adhesion contact between ice and solid surfaces of hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and superhydrophobic samples of an aluminum alloy. At the same time, substantially lower shear strength values of adhesion is observed for superhydrophobic surfaces, with these values decreasing with an increase in ice relaxation time.
