The millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar technology has attracted significant attention because it is susceptible to environmental lighting, wall shielding, and privacy concern. This article proposes a novel noninvasive human activity recognition system using a mmWave radar. The proposed framework first transforms mmWave signals into point clouds. Generally speaking, it consists of four major components: denosing, enhanced voxelization, data augmentation, and dual-view machine learning to lead to accurate and efficient human activity recognition. The proposed new methodology considers the spatial–temporal point clouds in physical environments through a modified voxelization approach, enriches the sparse data based on the symmetry property of radar rotations, and learns the activity using a dual-view convolutional neural network. To evaluate the performance of the proposed learning models, a dataset involving seven different activities has been established using a mmWave radar platform. The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed system can achieve 97.61% and 98% accuracies during the tests of fall detection and activity classification, respectively. In comparison, the proposed scheme greatly outperforms four other conventional machine learning schemes in terms of the overall accuracy.

In this paper, a novel robust graph-based adequate and concise information representation paradigm is explored. This new signal representation framework can provide a promising alternative for manifesting the essential structure of random signals. A typical application, namely, target detection within sea clutter, can thus be carried out using our proposed new graph-based signal characterization. According to Monte Carlo simulation results, the proposed graph-based signal (target) detection method leads to the outstanding performance, compared to other existing techniques, especially when the signal-to-noise ratio is rather small (0-6 dB). This new graph-based target detector can be expected to be the future backbone technique for identifying and tracking marine vessels using high-resolution radars.

With a flourish of wireless technologies, indoor localization is becoming an emerging topic for crucial practical research including homeland security, police patrolling, machinery fault-detection, target tracking, etc. Generally speaking, indoor localization technology involves three primary types of methodologies, namely range-based localization , fingerprint-based localization and inertial localization . This paper is aimed to present an overview of these prominent indoor localization techniques and the state-of-the-art solutions. To manifest this important topic, the general localization mechanisms are analyzed. Finally, performance requirements such as accuracy, cost, robustness are presented for benchmarking localization system performances.

Because of rapid growth of multimedia data over the Internet, the infobesity has been emerging in recent years. Many recommender systems (RSs) have been proposed using a variety of techniques, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical analysis, and data mining. Nowadays, E-commerce companies such as Amazon, eBay, Netflix, etc. have applied RSs conveniently to provide better customer services than before by enabling customized multimedia-content recommendations. It is well known that classical RSs are almost all based on the user-item attribute matrices. However, this two-fold user-item relationship should be extended to the emerging many-fold relationship among an arbitrary number of attribute groups so that the corresponding new RSs may lead to better performances. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel personalized multimedia recommender system (PMRS) according to our proposed new parallel higher-order tensor singular-value-decomposition (PHOTSVD) algorithm. This PHOTSVD algorithm is capable of accommodating an arbitrary number of entities such as social-media channels, users, queries, webpages, etc. in a robust RS. Furthermore, we also investigate the cold start and data bias problems critical to RSs. Finally, we compare the performances of our proposed new PMRS and three other existing tensor-based RSs over realworld data with respect to the well-adopted metric, namely normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). Our proposed new PMRS greatly outperforms the other three existing tensor-based RSs in terms of NRMSE.

In this work, a novel robust on-line indoor occupancy counting approach is proposed using the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar. The acquired radar data can be represented as sparse three-dimensional (3D) radar point-clouds. The conventional indoor occupancy-counting schemes suffer from various types of errors and uncertainties emerging from mmWave radar sensors. Thus, we propose a novel feature-extraction strategy to obtain the robust features for training the machine-learning driven occupancy-counter. We formulate the underlying indoor occupancy-counting problem as the multi-classification problem such that the k nearest neighbor (KNN) classifier is adopted to identify the number of occupants on line. Experimental results from realworld data demonstrate that our proposed new approach leads to a promising classification-accuracy of 95.8% for indoor occupancy counting. In the comparative study based on the realworld data, our proposed novel indoor occupancy-counting method greatly outperforms other existing schemes.

In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag-recognition method based on blind source separation (BSS), graph-based automatic modulation classification (AMC), and direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS). In our proposed method, RFID tags can be modulated using different modulation schemes according to different scenarios (e.g., different users or different tag devices). For each modulation scheme, the direct-sequence spread-spectrum strategy is employed to allow simultaneous transmissions of multiple commands. In the signal separation phase, BSS is employed to separate different transmitted signals. Then in the first hierarchy of the recognition phase, different modulation types are adopted to distinguish different users, the graph-based AMC is built upon the periodicity of the modulated signals: the cyclic spectrum of the received signal is established; the graph representation is then constructed according to the cyclic spectrum. Ultimately, robust features are extracted from the graph representation. In the second hierarchy of the recognition phase, the DSSS scheme is utilized to differentiate the control or sensed data carried by individual tags; the signature sequence set with low cross-correlations can be generated from Kasami sequences. In the third hierarchy of the recognition phase, the information data are thus spread by these signature sequences. In our proposed new RFID framework, multiple tags can transmit signals simultaneously in the same frequency band where each tag signal can still be separated and identified and its carried information can be recovered. Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate the promising performance of our proposed new RFID scheme.
