The main objective for the Three Gorges Reservoir is to help control floods and to protect the Jingjiang and Chenglingji regions in the middle reach of the Yangtze River. Hydrological measurements have demonstrated that the character of flood propagation in the Jingjiang Reach has changed significantly since the Three Gorges Reservoir became operational, meaning that flood control management must be modified accordingly. To explore the effective flood control management, a hydraulic model was developed to simulate the potential causes and impacts. For a natural flood with gradually varying discharge propagated as a diffusive wave, the celerity downside the dam fasted due to the change of the dominant property of the flood wave. For a flood event controlled by a reservoir, the wave was propagated more quickly as a surge with rapidly varying discharge. The rating curve changed for flooding processes associated with a diffusive wave versus a surge event at a particular cross-section, which changed the flow capacity in the river channel. Observed flood events in 2016 and 2017 were also simulated in the hydraulic model using different management schemes, and the modified flood propagation trends along the lower river reach were analyzed. Lastly, from these simulations, we provide suggestions on how to optimize the operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir to control flood damage and protect the Jiangjiang Reach and Chenglingji areas more effectively.

To realize the estimation of rainfall retention capacity for small reservoirs considering spatial soil moisture, a rainfall retention capacity model and its parameter schemes have been developed in this study. An iterative trial solution method considering potential rainfall and soil moisture for the model constructed was proposed for efficient computation. The rainfall retention capacity of 32 pilot small reservoirs located in ungauged basins of Hunan province was calculated starting from 21 August 2023. In addition, a continuous calculation was carried out from 1 August to 30 September 2023 using the proposed method for Heping reservoir. The results show that the Pearson’s correlation coefficients between rainfall retention capacity and available reservoir capacity and soil moisture, are 0.36 and −0.64, respectively. Using Heping reservoir as an example, this study effectively characterized the dynamic change in its rainfall retention capacity, which ranged from 123.6 mm to 68 mm in August 2023. The analysis indicates the rainfall retention capacity of the pilot small reservoirs calculated is reasonably related to the soil moisture, supporting risk visualization for small reservoirs within rain-affected regions. Furthermore, the impact of the antecedent precipitation on rainfall retention capacity can also be dynamically quantified in real time, which provides reference for the continuous management of small reservoirs.

Traditional reservoir flood control operations in China have long relied on a fixed flood-limited water level (FLWL), which frequently results in the underutilization of water resources during flood seasons. Dynamic FLWL regulation and joint reservoir operation have emerged as core strategies to optimize floodwater resource utilization while ensuring flood control safety. However, these approaches typically treat the flood control storage capacity of individual reservoirs as fixed constraints, failing to consider the potential for reallocating this capacity within a cascade reservoir system. This study explores the concept of “equivalent utilization of flood control storage capacity” among cascade reservoirs. Focusing on the four major reservoirs (Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba) in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, a methodology for analyzing the equivalent index of their flood control storage capacity is established. The core of this methodology involves a two-round scheduling simulation under various design flood scenarios. The first round of simulation adheres to standard operating rules, while the second round allows upstream reservoirs to retain additional flood volume—with downstream reservoirs correspondingly reducing their outflow—on the premise that downstream safety targets are satisfied. The equivalent index is defined as the ratio of the reduced storage capacity utilized downstream to the additional storage capacity utilized upstream. Nine design flood scenarios (covering three typical years with 1%, 2%, and 5% exceedance probabilities) for flood control in the Sichuan–Chongqing reach were analyzed, with the tightly coupled Wudongde–Baihetan and Xiluodu–Xiangjiaba reservoir pairs treated as two integrated units. The results indicate that the equivalent indices between these two reservoir groups range from 0.96 to 0.999, demonstrating near-perfect functional interchangeability of their flood control storage capacities for the specified research objective. For practical engineering application, a value of 0.96 is recommended as the lower-bound equivalent index. This study provides a methodological framework and specific index to support the dynamic, coordinated, and more efficient utilization of flood control storage capacity in large-scale cascade reservoir systems.

The pronounced spatial heterogeneity of underlying surface characteristics within the parallel ridge–valley system of eastern Sichuan necessitated hydrological discretization of the watershed into nested subdomains comprising inter-ridge valley units and secondary slope cells. A distributed flood simulation framework specifically adapted to parallel ridge–valley topography was developed, coupled with a sequential intelligent parameter optimization algorithm. Model validation was conducted through the simulation of ninety flood events (2015–2023) in the Lishui watershed, a representative parallel ridge–valley basin. For parameter-calibrated sub-watersheds, mean relative errors of 13.8% (peak discharge) and 12.3% (runoff depth) were achieved, while non-calibrated watersheds exhibited marginally higher inaccuracies at 14.6% and 15.1%, respectively. Spatial parameter estimation was effectively implemented through the assimilation of limited hydrometeorological station data. The integrated modeling framework, incorporating terrain-adaptive parameterization and intelligent calibration protocols, demonstrated high-fidelity flood process simulation capabilities in complex parallel ridge–valley landscapes.

To mitigate water supply security risks induced by saltwater intrusion in the Yangtze Estuary during dry seasons, this study investigates the characteristics of low-flow runoff variation at the Datong Station and develops a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model for the reach from Yichang to Jiangyin. The model is used to simulate the discharge response at Datong under various augmentation release schemes from the upstream reservoir group, dominated by the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). Using the extreme drought event of 2022 as a validation case, we propose optimized freshwater replenishment strategies for salinity suppression. Key findings include the following: (1) The seasonal water-storage operation (i.e., storing wet-season water for dry-season use) significantly increases dry-season discharge at Datong and substantially reduces the frequency of extreme low-flow events. (2) The response time of the maximum influenced discharge depends primarily on the duration of augmentation; as the TGD release duration increases from 1 to 30 days, the peak influenced discharge at Datong appears between 12 and 33.5 days after the start of replenishment. (3) The TGD augmentation release exhibits a linear positive correlation with the maximum influenced discharge at Datong; when augmentation lasts more than 30 days, the replenishment efficiency stabilizes at 80–82.5%. Considering the long-distance runoff propagation time along the mainstream, a steady-discharge mode is recommended for salinity suppression. In emergency conditions, replenishment should be initiated at least 4 days in advance; if augmentation is to be maintained for 10 days, then reservoir regulation should commence 18–20 days before the anticipated saltwater intrusion event. Practical application during the 2022 drought confirms that coordinated augmentation from the upstream reservoir group effectively elevates discharge at Datong and pushes the saltwater front downstream, substantially extending the water intake window for estuarine water sources. The derived runoff response characteristics and optimized dry-season regulation schemes can improve water supply reliability for key water sources in the Yangtze Estuary, ensure water security for Shanghai and surrounding areas, and provide theoretical and technical support for joint salinity-regulation control and estuarine water security management.
