Intelligent ultrasound imaging based on deep learning is one of the important applications in the field of intelligent medical care. In this article, we propose an automatic fetal ultrasound standard plane recognition (FUSPR) model based on deep learning in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environment. We build a distributed ultrasound data processing and predicting platform by using the IIoT and high-performance computing (HPC) technology. The FUSPR model deployed in the HPC center consists of a convolutional neural network (CNN) component and a recurrent neural network (RNN) component, which learns the spatial and temporal features of the ultrasound video stream by using multitask learning, respectively. The CNN component identifies fetal key anatomical structures from each video frame and accurately recognizes the potential four fetal standard planes. The RNN component obtains the temporal information between adjacent frames, and it realizes precise localization and tracking of fetal organs across frames. In addition, we introduce two feature fusion strategies into the FUSPR model, i.e., CNN fusion and RNN fusion, to fit the spatial sequence and motion representation in the video stream, thereby effectively improving the accuracy and robustness of the model. Extensive experiments conducted on more than 1000 ultrasound videos show that the FUSPR model is superior to the competing baselines in terms of accuracy and performance.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease that has caused thousands of deaths and infected millions worldwide. Thus, various technologies that allow for the fast detection of COVID-19 infections with high accuracy can offer healthcare professionals much-needed help. This study is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art pretrained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) on the automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 from chest X-rays (CXRs). The dataset used in the experiments consists of 1200 CXR images from individuals with COVID-19, 1345 CXR images from individuals with viral pneumonia, and 1341 CXR images from healthy individuals. In this paper, the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) in the rapid and precise identification of COVID-19 from CXR images has been explored based on different pretrained deep learning algorithms and fine-tuned to maximise detection accuracy to identify the best algorithms. The results showed that deep learning with X-ray imaging is useful in collecting critical biological markers associated with COVID-19 infections. VGG16 and MobileNet obtained the highest accuracy of 98.28%. However, VGG16 outperformed all other models in COVID-19 detection with an accuracy, F1 score, precision, specificity, and sensitivity of 98.72%, 97.59%, 96.43%, 98.70%, and 98.78%, respectively. The outstanding performance of these pretrained models can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of COVID-19 diagnosis. However, a larger dataset of COVID-19 X-ray images is required for a more accurate and reliable identification of COVID-19 infections when using deep transfer learning. This would be extremely beneficial in this pandemic when the disease burden and the need for preventive measures are in conflict with the currently available resources.

It is known that the Pareto-based approach is not well suited for optimization problems with a large number of objectives, even though it is a class of mainstream methods in multiobjective optimization. Typically, a Pareto-based algorithm comprises two parts: 1) a Pareto dominance-based criterion and 2) a diversity estimator. The former guides the selection toward the optimal front, while the latter promotes the diversity of the population. However, the Pareto dominance-based criterion becomes ineffective in solving optimization problems with many objectives (e.g., more than 3) and, thus, the diversity estimator will determine the performance of the algorithm. Unfortunately, the diversity estimator usually has a strong bias toward dominance resistance solutions (DRSs), thereby failing to push the population forward. DRSs are solutions that are far away from the Pareto-optimal front but cannot be easily dominated. In this article, we propose a new Pareto-based algorithm to resolve the above issue. First, to eliminate the DRSs, we design an interquartile range method to preprocess the solution set. Second, to balance convergence and diversity, we present a penalty mechanism of alternating operations between selection and penalty. The proposed algorithm is compared with five state-of-the-art algorithms on a number of well-known benchmarks with 3-15 objectives. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can perform well on most of the test functions and generally outperforms its competitors.

Echocardiography is an essential procedure for the prenatal examination of the fetus for congenital heart disease (CHD). Accurate segmentation of key anatomical structures in a four-chamber view is an essential step in measuring fetal growth parameters and diagnosing CHD. Currently, most obstetricians perform segmentation tasks manually, but the pixel-level operation is labor-intensive and requires extensive anatomical knowledge and clinical experience. As such, efficiently and accurately detecting structures from real-world fetal ultrasound images is a key challenge. In this paper, we propose a YOLOX-based deep instance segmentation neural network (i.e., IS-YOLOX) for cardiac anatomical structure location and segmentation in fetal ultrasound images. Specifically, we reconstruct a new instance segmentation branch based on a multi-task deep learning framework. We then design a new multi-level non-maximum suppression (NMS) mechanism to further improve the segmentation performance that consists of three levels of selection. Moreover, unlike two-stage instance segmentation approaches, our method does not rely on object detection results. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study regarding instance segmentation on 13 types of anatomical structures in the fetal four-chamber view. Extensive experiments were carried out on clinical datasets, and the experimental results show that our method outperforms nine competitive baselines.

Novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) is a contagious disease that has already caused thousands of deaths and infected millions of people worldwide. Thus, all technological gadgets that allow the fast detection of COVID-19 infection with high accuracy can offer help to healthcare professionals. This study is purposed to explore the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) in the rapid and reliable detection of COVID-19 based on chest X-ray imaging. In this study, reliable pre-trained deep learning algorithms were applied to achieve the automatic detection of COVID-19-induced pneumonia from digital chest X-ray images. Moreover, the study aims to evaluate the performance of advanced neural architectures proposed for the classification of medical images over recent years. The data set used in the experiments involves 274 COVID-19 cases, 380 viral pneumonia, and 380 healthy cases, which was derived from several open sources of X-Rays, and the data available online. The confusion matrix provided a basis for testing the post-classification model. Furthermore, an open-source library PYCM was used to support the statistical parameters. The study revealed the superiority of Model vgg16 over other models applied to conduct this research where the model performed best in terms of overall scores and based-class scores. According to the research results, deep Learning with X-ray imaging is useful in the collection of critical biological markers associated with COVID-19 infection. The technique is conducive for the physicians to make a diagnosis of COVID-19 infection. Meanwhile, the high accuracy of this computer-aided diagnostic tool can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of COVID-19 diagnosis.

Glaucoma is a chronic eye condition that seriously impairs vision and requires early diagnosis and treatment. Automated detection techniques are essential for obtaining a timely diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel method for feature selection that integrates the cuckoo search algorithm with Caputo fractional order (CFO-CS) to enhance the performance of glaucoma classification. However, when using the infinite series, the Caputo definition has memory length truncation issues. Therefore, we suggest a fixed memory step and an adjustable term count for optimization. We conducted experiments integrating various feature extraction techniques, including histograms of oriented gradients (HOGs), local binary patterns (LBPs), and deep features from MobileNet and VGG19, to create a unified vector. We evaluate the informative features selected from the proposed method using the k-nearest neighbor. Furthermore, we use data augmentation to enhance the diversity and quantity of the training set. The proposed method enhances convergence speed and the attainment of optimal solutions during training. The results demonstrate superior performance on the test set, achieving 92.62% accuracy, 94.70% precision, 93.52% F1-Score, 92.98% specificity, 92.36% sensitivity, and 85.00% Matthew’s correlation coefficient. The results confirm the efficiency of the proposed method, rendering it a generalizable and applicable technique in ophthalmology.
