Elva Bonifácio Andrade graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Porto (UP) in 2005 and earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS-UP) in 2013. Her doctoral work dissected innate immune mechanisms underlying neonatal susceptibility to Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae, GBS) infection. During postdoctoral training, she established a mouse model that recapitulates key features of human neonatal GBS pathogenesis, enabling mechanistic and translational studies. Since 2020, she has been a Research Scientist at i3S, where she leads a research line on neuro-immune interactions during GBS disease, with a particular focus on meningeal immunity and neuroprotection in the neonatal period. Her group integrates experimental models with advanced single-cell RNA sequencing to identify therapeutic and neuroprotective targets. Elva is also an Invited Assistant Professor at ICBAS-UP and at the School of Health, Polytechnic Institute of Porto, where she has been enrolled in teaching Immunology.
