Biography

I am a faculty member at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. I have been providing medical microbiology courses to graduate and undergraduate students since 2008. Additionally, I have been also involved in clinical microbiology service and research with a background in Medical Microbiology and Infection Epidemiology. I began my work with clinical virology in graduate school at Addis Ababa University, studying Human Papillomavirus (HPV), HPV-based screening, and cervical cancer in the context of Ethiopia. During my PhD journey, I studied the genotype distribution of high-risk HPVs from cervical samples and the role of HPV E6/E7 mRNA in the detection of high-grade cervical lesions. I did my laboratory work at the Institute of Virology, Leipzig University Hospital, Germany. I do have expertise in a wide range of laboratory techniques such as clinical microbiology, molecular testing on clinical samples, working in BSL-2 and BSL-3 containment laboratories, handling biohazardous substances, thesis supervision (both BSc and MSc students), manuscript writing and publication, and various Software programs. I am very much interested and excited to work in clinical/molecular virology, especially, on oncogenic viruses: understanding the complex virus-host interactions, the mechanisms of how viruses persist in the host, and and looking for novel screening, diagnostic, and prognostic markers.
