Prof. Liliana Mammino is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Venda (South Africa), where she has been working since 1997, and where she has initiated and developed research capacity in computational chemistry. She holds a degree in chemistry from the University of Pisa (Italy, her own country) and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Moscow State University (Russia), both with theses in theoretical chemistry. Her earlier work experience includes chemistry lecturing at the National University of Somalia (1975–1975), the University of Zambia (1988–1992), and the National University of Lesotho (1993–1996). Her major research interest focuses on the computational study of biologically active molecules. She is also keenly interested in chemistry education (with particular attention to conceptual understanding, the role of language in chemistry teaching and learning, and education for sustainable development) and in cross-disciplinary explorations. She has authored over 180 publications (comprising papers in journals and in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and chapters in books) and eight books. She has been editor or co-editor of seven collaborative books and is currently editing new ones. She is a member of the Interdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development of IUPAC. She was one of the recipients of the IUPAC Award for Distinguished Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in 2013. She received an award for sociolinguistics from ALASA in 2016.
