The phytoplankton size class (PSC) plays an important role in biogeochemical processes in the ocean. In this study, a regional model of PSCs is proposed to retrieve vertical PSCs from the total minus water absorption coefficient (at-w(λ)) and Chlorophyll a concentration (Chla). The PSC model is developed by first reconstructing phytoplankton absorption and Chla from at-w(λ), and then extracting PSC from them using the support vector machine (SVM). In situ bio-optical data collected in the South China Sea from 2006 to 2013 were used to train the SVM. The proposed PSC model was subsequently validated using an independent PSC dataset from the Northeast South China Sea Cruise in 2015. The results indicate that the PSC model performed better than the three components model, with a value of r2 between 0.35 and 0.66, and the absolute percentage difference between 56% and 181%. On the whole, our PSC model shows a remarkable utility in terms of inferring vertical PSCs from the South China Sea.

Nutrients are crucial factors for the growth of phytoplankton, and their biogeochemical processes directly impact marine biodiversity. In this study, based on two cruise observations in spring and summer of 2024, the seasonal and spatial variations of nutrients, chlorophyll a, and other ecological indicators in Daya Bay were explored. The results indicated that the average concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silicate were 3.61 ± 3.99 µM and 26.27 ± 13.91 µM in summer, respectively, compared with 2.48 ± 1.53 µM and 23.8 ± 6.77 µM in spring. The average concentration of dissolved inorganic phosphate was 0.29 ± 0.12 µM in summer, lower than 0.32 ± 0.09 µM in spring. The stoichiometric proportion among nutrients at most monitoring stations were far from Redfield ratio, and a succession from N-limited to P-limited was observed. A transformation has been observed in the dominant composition of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, shifting from ammonia to total oxidized nitrogen as the main component, which is mainly attributable to the decrease in aquaculture activities in Daya Bay over the last 3 years. In addition, the warm wastewater discharge from nuclear power stations directly influences the distribution of phytoplankton in the surrounding areas. This study provides timely information regarding recent shifts in ecological indicators and is significant to the ecological protection, environmental management, and policy adjustment in Daya Bay.

The standing stock of phytoplankton carbon is a basic and essential property for understanding oceanic ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles, and regional climates. However, current related algorithms mainly focus on remote-sensed application, which cannot describe the vertical profile of phytoplankton carbon throughout the whole euphotic zone. In this study, we modified a previous absorption-based bio-optical algorithm to acquire vertical variabilities of the total and size-partitioned phytoplankton carbon based on field data from the South China Sea (SCS). The mean absolute errors and the biases between estimated and field picophytoplankton carbon were <2.14 and 0.6–2.0, respectively. The results showed that the vertical profile of total phytoplankton carbon displayed a Gaussian distribution in the stratified SCS basin. The picophytoplankton carbon was always the fundamental component of the total phytoplankton carbon within the whole euphotic zone. The dominant picophytoplankton species changed from Synechococcus-like cyanobacteria at the sea surface to pico-sized haptophytes at the phytoplankton carbon maximum layer. The strong covariation between total phytoplankton carbon and chlorophyll-a concentration suggested that they can be converted into each other through an accurate carbon-to-chlorophyll ratio in the open SCS. These results provide essential information that can be used to decipher the three-dimensional structure of total and size-partitioned phytoplankton carbon in the open SCS.

This study presents an innovative technique for the in situ analysis of aquatic biochemical elements detected through wet chemical processes. A new compact in situ phosphate analyzer based on sequential injection analysis, liquid waveguide capillary flow cell and spectrophotometry was developed, and a safe and modular electronics-chemical separation mechanical structure was designed. The sequential injection system of this analyzer was optimized, and the major functions of this analyzer were studied and estimated. With a 10 cm liquid waveguide capillary flow cell and a 6.3 min time cost of detection, the analyzer reaches a detection limit of 1.4 μg·L−1 (≈14.7 nM, [PO43−]) and a consumption of 23 μL at most for each reagent. This analyzer was operated in situ and online during two scientific research cruises in the Pearl River Estuary and northern South China Sea. The advantages of this analyzer include its simple versatile manifold, full automation, low chemical consumption and electronics-chemical separate safe structure. Long-term in situ performance of this analyzer will be validated in the future.
