On a wind farm, the wake has an important impact on the performance of the wind turbines. For example, the wake of an upstream wind turbine affects the blade load and output power of the downstream wind turbine. In this paper, a modified actuator line model with blade tips, root loss, and an airfoil three-dimensional delayed stall was revised. This full-scale modified actuator line model with blades, nacelles, and towers, was combined with a Large Eddy Simulation, and then applied and validated based on an analysis of wind turbine wakes in wind farms. The modified actuator line model was verified using an experimental wind turbine. Subsequently, numerical simulations were conducted on two NREL 5 MW wind turbines with different staggered spacing to study the effect of the staggered spacing on the characteristics of wind turbines. The results show that the output power of the upstream turbine stabilized at 5.9 MW, and the output power of the downstream turbine increased. When the staggered spacing is R and 1.5R, both the power and thrust of the downstream turbine are severely reduced. However, the length of the peaks was significantly longer, which resulted in a long-term unstable power output. As the staggered spacing increased, the velocity in the central near wake of the downstream turbine also increased, and the recovery speed at the threshold of the wake slowed down. The modified actuator line model described herein can be used for the numerical simulation of wakes in wind farms.

The solar trough concentrator is used to increase the solar radiation intensity on absorbers for water heating, desalination, or power generation purposes. In this study, optical performances of four solar trough concentrators, viz. the parabolic trough concentrator (PTC), the compound parabolic concentrator (CPC), the surface uniform concentrator (SUC), and the trapezoid trough concentrator (TTC), are simulated using the Monte Carlo Ray Tracing method. Mathematical models for the solar trough concentrators are first established. The solar radiation distributions on their receivers are then simulated. The solar water heating performances using the solar trough concentrators are finally compared. The results show that, as a high-concentration ratio concentrator, the PTC can achieve the highest heat flux, but suffers from the worst uniformity on the absorber, which is only 0.32%. The CPC can generate the highest heat flux among the rest three low-concentration ratio solar trough concentrators. Compared with the PTC and the CPC, the TTC has better uniformity, but its light-receiving ratio is only 70%. The SUC is beneficial for its highest uniformity of 87.38%. Thermal analysis results show that the water temperatures inside the solar trough concentrators are directly proportional to their wall temperature, with the highest temperature rise in the PTC and the smallest temperature rise in the TTC. The solar trough concentrators’ thermal deformations are positively correlated to their wall temperatures. The radial deformation of the SUC is much larger than those of other solar trough concentrators. The smallest equivalent stress is found in the SUC, which is beneficial to the long-term operation of the solar water heating system.

Film cooling has been widely applied to the highly efficient thermal protection of gas turbines. By using the simplified thermal lattice Boltzmann method (STLBM), a series of large-scale simulations of film cooling are performed to dig up the mixing mechanism of double rows film cooling with the combination of forward and backward jets at the first attempt. The combination of an upstream row with forward jet and a downstream row with backward jet is considered. The Reynolds number is 4000. The blowing ratio of the upstream coolant jet is fixed as BR1=0.5. For the downstream coolant jet (BR2), five values ranging from 0.2–0.8 are considered. The inclination angles of forward jet and backward jet are 35° and 145°, respectively. The numerical results reveal that the performance of film cooling is greatly improved by backward downstream jet due to the suppression of counterrotating vortex pair (CVP). Moreover, the flow structure is changed with the blowing ratio of backward jet. An anti-CVP having the opposite rotational direction to CVP appears as the blowing ratio of backward jet is large. The special flow structure weakens the adverse effect of CVP and transports much coolant jet to the cooled wall. Correspondingly, the time-averaged film cooling effectiveness is increased and the fluctuation of film cooling effectiveness is decreased. All of these indicate that a backward downstream jet with a large blowing ratio improves film cooling performance. The results obtained in this work help to the optimization of film cooling scheme, which also benefit the promotion and application of STLBM in gas turbine engineering.

A series of large-scale parallel simulations of flat-plate film cooling are performed to uncover the qualitative and quantitative relationship between coherent structure dynamics and heat-transfer features. The near-wall flow dynamics and heat-transfer features at five inclination angles of 15∘, 30∘, 45∘, 60∘ and 90∘ are also analyzed in detail. Hybrid thermal lattice Boltzmann method and multiple graphic processing units are used to fulfill the simulation efficiently. The detailed coherent structure dynamics are captured by the high-resolution simulation. The results show that large vertical size of coherent structure and great intensity of negative spanwise vorticity indicate prominent coolant-jet detachment leading to bad cooling performance. Meanwhile, the value of area-averaged film cooling effectiveness is proportional to 4th power of area-averaged non-dimensional turbulent kinetic energy. This quantitative relationship is first proposed to make further understanding of film-cooing mixing mechanism. On the other hand, inclination angle has a complicated impact on flow dynamics and heat-transfer features. The vertical size of coherent structure becomes large and the strength of negative spanwise vorticity is strengthened in the case of large inclination angle, resulting in poor cooling performance. The influence of inclination angle is less remarkable in large-inclination-angle case than that of small inclination angle.

A series of high resolution simulations on film cooling with varying blowing ratios and inclination angles are carried out by using in-house code based on hybrid thermal lattice Boltzmann method. Three blowing ratios ranging from 0.2-0.8 and four inclination angles from 15? to 60? are chosen for the simulations. The evolutionary mechanism of coherent structure in three domains of film-covering region is studied from the view of space and time. Besides, the influencing mechanism of blowing ratio and inclination angle on flow and heat transfer features of film cooling is uncovered. Results show that hairpin vortex, hairpin packet, and quasi-streamwise vortex appearing in rotating domain play a key role in heat transfer process of film cooling. The strong ejection, sweep and vortex rotation resulted from these vortices enhance the convective heat transfer. It is also found that the size of coherent structure varies significantly with blowing ratio and its integral form shows a strong dependence on inclination angle. Moreover, inclination angle of coolant jet has a significant impact on turbulence fluctuation intensity. The influence of blowing ratio on the attachment of coolant film and film-cooling performance is more obvious than that of inclination angle. It is believed that all of these are related closely to the variation of streamwise and wall-normal jet velocity in the case of various blowing ratios and inclination angles.

The spatiotemporal evolution of the flow structures and coolant coverage of double-row film cooling with upstream forward jets and downstream backward jets, having a significant impact on film-cooling performance, is studied using the simplified thermal lattice Boltzmann method (STLBM). Moreover, the effect of the inclination angle of downstream backward jets is considered. The high-performance simulations of film cooling have been conducted by using our verified in-house solver. Results show that special flow structures, such as a sand dune-shaped protrusion, appear in double-row film cooling with upstream forward jets and downstream backward jets, which is mainly because of the blockage effect resulting from the coolant jet with backward injection. The interaction among structures results in the generation of an anti-counterrotating vortex pair (anti-CVP). The anti-CVP with the downwash motion can result in the attachment of coolant to the bottom wall, which promotes the stability and lateral coverage of coolant film. The momentum and heat transport are strengthened as the backward jet is injected into the boundary layer of the mainstream. Although the downstream evolution of the backward jet is not very smooth, its core attaches closely to the bottom wall due to the downwash motion of anti-CVP. Moreover, there is an obvious backflow zone shown in the trailing edge of the downstream backward jet with a large inclination angle. The obvious backflow makes the coolant attach to the bottom wall well. Therefore, the film cooling effectiveness is improved as the inclination angle of the downstream backward jet varies from αdown=135° to αdown=155°, with a constant blowing ratio of BR=0.5. In addition, the fluctuation of the bottom wall’s temperature is weak due to the stable coverage of the coolant layer under αdown=155°. The film-cooling performance with an inclination angle of αdown=155° is the best among all the cases studied in this work. This work provides essential insights into film cooling with backward coolant injection and contributes to obtaining a complete understanding of film cooling with backward coolant injection.
