Information

I am a Professor of Ecology and Biodiversity and P.I. of the Laboratory of Ecology and Biodiversity at the Dept. of Biological Sciences (Univ. of Cyprus) since 2012. I hold a degree in Biology (1988) from the Univ. of Athens (Greece), and a PhD diploma from the same institute (1994). My main research interests include island biogeography, phylogeography and community ecology, as well as phylogeny, focusing on terrestrial taxa, mainly terrestrial isopods (Crustacea, Oniscidea), of which I have described >20 species new to science. I explore evolutionary diversification of taxa on insular habitats, as well as elevational gradients of arthropod communities on mountains. In addition, I am interested in theoretical aspects of island biogeography, community assembly and several other related issues. During the past 9 years I have established my new lab at UCYECOBIO, aiming to study also the biodiversity of Cyprus, including the ecology, genetic diversity and ecophysiology of animal species that are endemic or of conservation interest. I have published >80 papers in peer-reviewed journals and volumes, and ca. 130 communications in >60 international and national congresses. I have organized ca. 10 international and national congresses, and have coordinated several research projects on phylogeography and terrestrial ecology. I am member of Editorial Boards in 5 international journals and a reviewer in >45 journals.
