Precipitation datasets derived from reanalysis products play a crucial role in weather forecasting and hydrological applications. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of two distinct reanalysis precipitation products, i.e., the first-generation Chinese global land-surface reanalysis precipitation product (CRA40) and the fifth-generation European reanalysis precipitation product (ERA5), over mainland China. The evaluation is based on continuous and categorical statistical indicators with daily-scale gridded-point rain gauge data obtained from Chinese surface meteorological stations. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) CRA40 demonstrates a clear superiority over ERA5 in terms of the 13-year daily mean precipitation and seasonal daily precipitation. CRA40 exhibits better correlation coefficients (0.97), relative biases (5.25%), root mean square errors (0.34 mm), and fractional standard errors (0.05). (2) Both reanalyzed precipitation products generally exhibit an overestimation of precipitation in mainland China. The degree of overestimation is particularly pronounced in dry climatic regions (e.g., QZ, XJ), while wet regions (e.g., CJ, HN) demonstrate relatively less overestimation. (3) ERA5 shows better performance in the detection of daily precipitation. Neither CRA40 nor ERA5 can capture heavy precipitation events well. These findings are expected to advance our understanding of the strengths and limitations of the reanalysis precipitation products, CRA40 and ERA5, over China.

This paper evaluated the latest version 6.0 Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) and version 6.0 Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) products during 2018 Typhoon Mangkhut in China. The reference data is the rain gauge datasets from Gauge-Calibrated Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) Morphing Technique (CMORPHGC). The products for comparison include the GSMaP near-real-time, Microwave-IR merged, and gauge-calibrated (GSMaP_NRT, GSMaP_MVK, and GSMaP_Gauge) and the IMERG Early, Final, and Final gauge-calibrated (IMERG_ERUncal, IMERG_FRUncal, and IMERG_FRCal) products. The results show that (1) both GSMaP_Gauge and IMERG_FRCal considerably reduced the bias of their satellite-only products. GSMaP_Gauge outperforms IMERG_FRCal with higher Correlation Coefficient (CC) values of about 0.85, 0.78, and 0.50; lower Fractional Standard Error (FSE) values of about 18.00, 18.85, and 29.30; and Root-Mean-Squared Error (RMSE) values of about 12.12, 33.35, and 32.99 mm in the rainfall centers over mainland China, southern China, and eastern China, respectively. (2) GSMaP products perform better than IMERG products, with higher Probability of Detection (POD) and Critical Success Index (CSI) and lower False Alarm Ratio (FAR) in detecting rainfall occurrence, especially for high rainfall rates. (3) For area-mean rainfall, IMERG performs worse than GSMaP in the rainfall centers over mainland China and southern China but shows better performance in the rainfall center over eastern China. GSMaP_Gauge and IMERG_FRCal perform well in the three regions with a high CC (0.79 vs. 0.94, 0.81 vs. 0.96, and 0.95 vs. 0.97) and a low RMSE (0.04 vs. 0.06, 0.40 vs. 0.59, and 0.19 vs. 0.34 mm). These useful findings will help algorithm developers and data users to better understand the performance of GSMaP and IMERG products during typhoon precipitation events.

Extreme precipitation events have increasingly happened at global and regional scales as the global climate has changed in recent decades. Accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) plays an important role in the warning of extreme precipitation events. With hourly rain gauge observations as a reference, this study compares the performance of Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission (IMERG) and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products over Northern China in 2021. The Probability of Detection (POD), Relative Bias (RB), Root-Mean-Squared Error (RMSE), and Fractional Standard Error (FSE) are among the assessment metrics, as are the Probability of Detection (POD), False Alarm Ratio (FAR), and Critical Success Index (CSI). We examined the spatial distribution of cumulative precipitation and the temporal distribution of hourly average precipitation for three severe precipitation occurrences using these assessment metrics. The IMERG products capture strong precipitation centers that are compatible with the gauge observations, especially in extreme precipitation events in areas with relatively flat terrain and low-altitude (≤1000 m). Both IMERG (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA) and GSMaP (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA) satellite-based QPE products have precipitation peaks in advance (2–4 h) and generally underestimate (overestimate) precipitation when the actual precipitation is heavy (light). The satellite-based QPE products generally overestimate the heavy rainfall caused by non-typhoons and underestimate the heavy rainfall caused by typhoons. The GSMaP products may have the capacity to detect short-term rainstorm events. The accuracy of satellite-based QPE products may be influenced by precipitation intensity, sensors, terrain, and other variables. Therefore, in accordance with our recommendations, more ground rainfall stations should be used to collect actual precipitation data in regions with high levels of spatial heterogeneity and complex topography. The data programmers should strengthen the weights computation retrieval technique and fully utilize infrared (IR)-based data. Furthermore, this study is expected to give helpful feedback to the algorithm developers of IMERG and GSMaP products, as well as those researchers into the use of IMERG and GSMaP satellite-based QPE products in applications.

In the summer of 2023, North China experienced a rare extreme precipitation storm due to Typhoons Doksuri and Khanun, leading to significant secondary disasters and highlighting the urgent need for accurate rainfall forecasting. Satellite-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products like Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission have great potential for enhancing forecasts, necessitating a quantitative evaluation before deployment. This study uses a dense rain gauge as a benchmark to assess the accuracy and capability of the latest version 7B IMERG and version 8 GSMaP satellite-based QPE products for the 2023 summer extreme precipitation in North China. These satellite-based QPE products include four satellite-only products, namely IMERG early run (IMERG_ER) and IMERG late run (IMERG_LR), GSMaP near-real-time (GSMaP_NRT), and GSMaP microwave-infrared reanalyzed (GSMaP_MVK), along with two gauge-corrected products, namely IMERG final run (IMERG_FR) and GSMaP gauge adjusted (GSMaP_Gauge). The results show that (1) GSMaP_MVK, IMERG_LR, and IMERG_FR effectively capture the space distribution of the extreme rainfall, with relatively high correlation coefficients (CCs) of approximately 0.77, 0.75, and 0.79. The IMERG_ER, GSMaP_NRT, and GSMaP_Gauge products exhibit a less accurate spatial pattern capture (CCs about 0.66, 0.73, and 0.67, respectively). Each of the six QPE products tends to underestimate rainfall (RBs < 0%). (2) The IMERG products surpass the corresponding GSMaP products in serial rainfall measurement. IMERG_LR demonstrates superior performance with the lowest root-mean-square error (RMSE) (about 0.38 mm), the highest CC (0.97), and less underestimation (RB about −6.37%). (3) The IMERG products at rainfall rates ≥ 30 mm/h, GSMaP_NRT and GSMaP_MVK products at rainfall rates ≥ 55 mm/h, and GSMaP_Gauge products at ≥ 40 mm/h showed marked limitations in event detection, with a near-zero probability of detection (POD) and a nearly 100% false alarm ratio (FAR). In this extreme precipitation event, caution is needed when using the IMERG and GSMaP products.

Raindrop size distribution (DSD) can be used to improve the accuracy of radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) and further understand the microphysical process of precipitation; however, its spatio-temporal characteristics vary with different climates, rain types, and geographical locations. Due to the lack of observations, the DSD characteristics in the Beibu Gulf, especially at the rainfall center of Guangxi in South China, is poorly understood. In this paper, these regional DSD characteristics were analyzed during the warm season with an upgraded version of the OTT Particle Size Velocity (Parsivel) (OTT2) disdrometer. The DSD datasets from June to October 2020 and March to May 2021 were grouped into convective and stratiform precipitation by rain rate (R). The rainfall parameters were calculated from DSDs to further understand the rain characteristics. The results showed that: (1) the regional DSDs feature the lowest concentration of largest-sized drops when compared with the statistical results for other areas such as Zhuhai in South China, Nanjing in East China, Hubei province in Central China and Beijing in North China; (2) the raindrop spectra have an excellent fit with the three-parameter gamma distribution, particularly in regard to the medium-size raindrops; (3) the μ–Λ relation is closer to the coastal regions than the inland area of South China; (4) the localized Z−R relations differ greatly for convective rainfall (Z = 202.542 R1.553) and stratiform rainfall (Z = 328.793 R1.363). This study is the first study on DSDs in the Beibu Gulf region. The above findings will provide a better understanding of the microphysical nature of surface precipitation for different rain types along the Beibu Gulf in southern China, which may improve precipitation retrievals from remote sensing observations.

This study evaluates two reanalysis precipitation products (CRA40 and ERA5) over the Ganjiang River Basin with precipitation data from 37 ground rainfall gauges and surface-observed stream flow data from January 1998 to December 2008. Direct comparison with rain gauge observations shows that both CRA40 and ERA5 can capture the spatial and temporal characteristics of precipitation at the basin scale of the Ganjiang River and reflect most of the precipitation events, but there are pronounced differences in the quality of precipitation between them. ERA5 performs better on the daily scale, capturing precipitation changes more accurately over short periods of time, while CRA40 performs better on the monthly scale, providing more stable and long-term precipitation trends. The results of stream flow simulations using two reanalysis precipitation products driving the VIC hydrological model show that (1) CRA40 outperforms ERA5 with a better Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE, 0.65 and 0.6) and higher CC (0.96 and 0.91) in daily and monthly scale stream flow simulations, and ERA5 has a good CC (0.86 and 0.93, respectively), but its NSE is poor (0.29 and 0.30, respectively); (2) both CRA40 and ERA5 generally overestimate basin stream flows, especially during the flood season (April–September), with ERA5’s overestimation being more pronounced. This study is expected to provide a basis for the selection of reliable reanalysis products for Ganjiang River Basin precipitation and hydrological simulation.
