Through many years of clinical/basic research on atopic dermatitis, Dr. Jung U Shin performed in-depth research on skin biology and immunology. She studied the skin barrier function and the role of immune cells, such as eosinophils, CD4+ T cells, NKT cells, and Tregs, in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis. She developed an allergen immunotherapy using microneedles and validated its efficacy using animal models. Recently, she is extending her research field to skin disease models using bioengineering technologies, psychological disability in atopic dermatitis, as well as skin-neuro-immune networks in inflammatory skin diseases.
Representative research achievements: A study on the mechanism of depression in atopic dermatitis (Arch Pharm Res, 2021), a study on the function of PFN-1 in psoriasis (J Invest Dermatol 2021), development of immune-competent 3D skin model for psoriasis (Sci Report 2020), discovery of ZAG and identification of its effect on skin barrier and skin inflammation (J Invest Dermatol 2019), development and validation of allergen-loaded microneedles as a new treatment for atopic dermatitis (Biomaterials 2018), and development of animal models for atopic dermatitis allergen immunotherapy ( Allergy 2018).
