The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a relatively new optimization technique which has been shown to be competitive to other population-based algorithms. However, ABC has an insufficiency regarding its solution search equation, which is good at exploration but poor at exploitation. To address this concerning issue, we first propose an improved ABC method called as CABC where a modified search equation is applied to generate a candidate solution to improve the search ability of ABC. Furthermore, we use the orthogonal experimental design (OED) to form an orthogonal learning (OL) strategy for variant ABCs to discover more useful information from the search experiences. Owing to OED's good character of sampling a small number of well representative combinations for testing, the OL strategy can construct a more promising and efficient candidate solution. In this paper, the OL strategy is applied to three versions of ABC, i.e., the standard ABC, global-best-guided ABC (GABC), and CABC, which yields OABC, OGABC, and OCABC, respectively. The experimental results on a set of 22 benchmark functions demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the modified search equation and the OL strategy. The comparisons with some other ABCs and several state-of-the-art algorithms show that the proposed algorithms significantly improve the performance of ABC. Moreover, OCABC offers the highest solution quality, fastest global convergence, and strongest robustness among all the contenders on almost all the test functions.
The emergence of Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) has brought hope for the popularization and application of mobile Internet standards. Nowadays, NB-IoT technology has been introduced into the 3GPP standards, where low-overhead, low-data-transmission IoT devices can securely access the fifth Generation (5G) core network through the 3GPP access network. However, according to the current 3GPP standard, these NB-IoT devices still employ the traditional authentication process of normal User Equipment (UE) to implement mutual authentication between NB-IoT devices and 5G core networks, which brings a lot of communication and storage overhead, and it will be more serious when lots of NB-IoT devices are activated simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a fast mutual authentication and data transfer scheme for massive NB-IoT devices, which integrates the access authentication and secure data transmission process and achieves the authentications and data transmissions of a group of NB-IoT devices at the same time. Our scheme can not only greatly simplify the authentication process and alleviate the load of the networks, but also ensure robust security protection including user anonymity and non-repudiation. The performance analysis results show that the proposed scheme can withstand a variety of security attacks with ideal efficiency.
This article proposes a three-level radial basis function (TLRBF)-assisted optimization algorithm for expensive optimization. It consists of three search procedures at each iteration: 1) the global exploration search is to find a solution by optimizing a global RBF approximation function subject to a distance constraint in the whole search space; 2) the subregion search is to generate a solution by minimizing an RBF approximation function in a subregion determined by fuzzy clustering; and 3) the local exploitation search is to generate a solution by solving a local RBF approximation model in the neighborhood of the current best solution. Compared with some other state-of-the-art algorithms on five commonly used scalable benchmark problems, ten CEC2015 computationally expensive problems, and a real-world airfoil design optimization problem, our proposed algorithm performs well for expensive optimization.

It is very difficult to locate multiple global optimal solutions (GOSs) of multimodal optimization problems (MMOPs). To deal with this issue, a penalty-based multimodal optimization differential evolution (DE), called PMODE, is developed in this article. In PMODE, a penalty strategy with a dynamic penalty radius is constructed to solve MMOPs. An elite selection mechanism is designed to identify and select elite solutions. The neighboring areas of these elite solutions are penalized. PMODE uses a popular DE variant—JADE as its search engine. The proposed PMODE is compared with several other state-of-the-art multimodal optimization algorithms on 20 MMOPs used in the IEEE CEC2013 special session. The experimental results show that PMODE performs better than other state-of-the-art methods.
As an essential step of metaheuristic optimizers, initialization seriously affects the convergence speed and solution accuracy. The main motivation of the state-of-the-art initialization method is to generate a small initial population to cover the search space as much as possible uniformly. However, these approaches have suffered from the curse of dimensionality, high computational cost, and sensitivity to parameters, which ultimately reduce the algorithm’s convergence speed. In this paper, a new initialization technique named diagonal linear uniform initialization (DLU) is proposed, which follows a novel search view, i.e., adopting the diagonal subspace sampling instead of the whole space. By considering the algorithm’s update mechanism, the improved sampling method dramatically improves the convergence speed and solution accuracy of metaheuristic algorithms. Compared with the other eight widely used initialization strategies, the differential evolution (DE) algorithm with DLU obtains the best performance in search accuracy and convergence speed. In the extension experiments, results show that the DLU is still effective for three swarm-based algorithms: particle swarm optimization (PSO), cuckoo search (CS), and artificial bee colony (ABC). Especially for the multi-objective problem, the DLU still demonstrates its powerful performance compared with other strategies.

Evolutionary multitasking (EMT) with the ability to tackle multiple different tasks has attracted more and more attention. The transferred knowledge among tasks can simultaneously improve the solving efficiency of all optimization problems in the evolutionary process. However, if the way of knowledge transfer is inappropriate, the negative knowledge transfer will make a bad effect on the performance of EMT algorithms. It is worth studying that how to promote the positive knowledge transfer across tasks. In this paper, a multiobjective multitasking algorithm named EMT-DAVT is introduced. The proposed algorithm contains two components, namely subspace distribution alignment (DA) strategy and decision variable transfer (VT) mechanism. In DA strategy, a learned mapping matrix is utilized to align the distributions in the subspaces and reduces the divergence between subpopulations belonging to different tasks. Then, VT mechanism is implemented which can further promote the positive information transfer. The two proposed strategies interact with each other to improve the knowledge transfer. Finally, the search engine is designed to balance exploration and exploitation. The experimental results on the multiobjective multitasking test suites demonstrate that EMT-DAVT outperforms other classical multiobjective multitasking evolutionary algorithms.
