Biomimetics, which draws inspiration from nature, has emerged as a key approach in the development of underwater vehicles. The integration of this approach with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has further propelled research in this field. CFD, as an effective tool for dynamic analysis, contributes significantly to understanding and resolving complex fluid dynamic problems in underwater vehicles. Biomimetics seeks to harness innovative inspiration from the biological world. Through the imitation of the structure, behavior, and functions of organisms, biomimetics enables the creation of efficient and unique designs. These designs are aimed at enhancing the speed, reliability, and maneuverability of underwater vehicles, as well as reducing drag and noise. CFD technology, which is capable of precisely predicting and simulating fluid flow behaviors, plays a crucial role in optimizing the structural design of underwater vehicles, thereby significantly enhancing their hydrodynamic and kinematic performances. Combining biomimetics and CFD technology introduces a novel approach to underwater vehicle design and unveils broad prospects for research in natural science and engineering applications. Consequently, this paper aims to review the application of CFD technology in the biomimicry of underwater vehicles, with a primary focus on biomimetic propulsion, biomimetic drag reduction, and biomimetic noise reduction. Additionally, it explores the challenges faced in this field and anticipates future advancements.

The black soil of Northeast China is sticky and agglomerates easily, which often adheres to the surface of a traditional furrow opener during the furrowing process. In this paper, biomimetic design principles in resistance-reducing, anti-adhesion and resistance-reducing mechanism of biomimetic disc furrow opener were studied. Nine kinds of singular convex hull, nine kinds of singular wedge and nine kinds of mixed convex hull and wedge structural biomimetic disc furrow opener were designed, and the furrowing process with the soil simulated by finite element method (FEM).Three types of biomimetic disc furrow opener with less resistance were manufactured by laser processing for comparative test in soil bin based on the simulation results. The test results showed that the resistance of the biomimetic disc furrow opener was less than that of the ordinary disc. The soil-disc stress, influence of biomimetic structures, moisture content and furrow speeds on resistance were discussed. The resistance-reducing rate of D-BC-3 reached the maximum value 15.36% at the furrow speed of 0.6 m/s and the soil moisture content of 20%. It is believed that the biomimetic design principles can provide the significant inspirations for the future design of disc furrow opener with drag reduction.

When beetles are not in flight, their hind wings are folded and hidden under the elytra to reduce their size. This provided inspiration for the design of flapping-wing micro aerial vehicles (FWMAVs). In this paper, microstructures and nanomechanical properties of three beetle species with different wing folding ratios living in different environments were investigated. Factors affecting their flight performance, that is, wind speed, folding ratio, aspect ratio, and flapping frequency, were examined using a wind tunnel. It was found that the wing folding ratio correlated with the lift force of the beetles. Wind speed, folding ratio, aspect ratio, and flapping frequency had a combined effect on the flight performance of the beetles. The results will be helpful to design new deployable FWMAVs.

The exhaust tailpipe of a certain type of tractor was improved from the perspective of bionics, and bionic triangular convex texture was added to the inner surface of the exhaust tailpipe. The bionic tailpipe was proposed to improve noise reduction performance without changing the overall size parameters of the prototype tailpipe. Acoustics simulation software was used to predict the aeroacoustics noise and transmission loss of the exhaust tailpipe. Bionic exhaust tailpipes with triangular textures of different numbers of circumferential columns, height, and top angles were analyzed to study the noise reduction performance. The results showed that the proposed bionic exhaust tailpipes with triangular convex textures reduced the total sound pressure level and improved the transmission loss of the prototype exhaust tailpipe. To increase the transmission loss, a genetic algorithms (GA) optimized back-propagation neural network (BP) was used to optimize the bionic triangular convex texture parameters. By studying the aerodynamic noise reduction mechanism of bionic tailpipes, the research suggested that a secondary vortex appeared near the bionic texture and reduced aerodynamic drag and aeroacoustics noise. In addition, the sound pressure level amplitude nephogram, velocity vector nephogram, and velocity amplitude nephogram of the exhaust tailpipes were analyzed to study the vibration noise reduction mechanism of the bionic tailpipes. Then, the noise reduction performance was experimentally evaluated. The experimental results of the bionics exhaust tailpipes with triangular convex textures were analyzed and compared to that of the prototype tailpipe. The results demonstrated that the bionic exhaust tailpipes were able to attenuate noise.

This work presents a numerical study of the water-exit characteristics of a bioinspired unmanned aerial-underwater vehicle (UAUV) equipped with a front-mounted propeller. A robust solution framework was established on the basis of a modified Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model, volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase formulation, overset grid technique, and six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) motion model; the framework was verified against a canonical water-exit case of a sphere. Inspired by the morphology and water-exit behavior of flying fish, a bioinspired three-dimensional (3D) model was designed. Using this framework, the effects of the front-mounted propeller configuration, exit velocity, and exit angle were examined; the exit process under different conditions was analyzed; and the relationship between exit drag and exit state was quantified. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach can resolve the water-exit performance of the bioinspired UAUV in detail. Folding the front-mounted propeller effectively reduces exit drag and mitigates high-pressure concentrations on the blades. When the exit velocity is ≥8 m/s and the exit angle θ ≤ 30°, the peak exit drag does not surpass 90.004 N. The peak exit drag exhibits a pronounced quadratic relationship with both exit velocity and exit angle. To ensure safe water exit, the UAUV should avoid exiting with the front-mounted propeller deployed and avoid excessively low exit velocities and overly large exit angles. The numerical investigation of exit drag provides effective bioinspired design guidelines and a feasible analysis strategy for UAUV development. In conclusion, the findings provide crucial insights for designing more efficient bioinspired UAUVs, particularly in terms of minimizing water-exit drag and optimizing the configuration of the front-mounted propeller.

Cycloidal propellers are special propellers that can obtain a wide range of thrust in any direction without changing the propeller rotation speed or requiring the assistance of a rudder. They are typically installed on ships with high-mobility requirements. The implementation of pure cycloidal blade pitch control is complex, and there are a few control mechanisms capable of realizing these blade pitch motions. In this paper, a multi-link mechanism is designed to control the movement of the blades, and the relationships between blade pitch angle, linkage lengths, and their adjustment angles are established. The linkage lengths and their adjustment angles are solved using a genetic algorithm. The blade pitch angle controlled by the multi-link mechanism matches well with the pure cycloidal pitch angle after adjusting the linkage lengths and adjustment angles. The layout of linkages for the six-blade cycloidal propeller is designed to ensure that there is no motion interference between the linkages and their supporting shafts during operation. The open water hydrodynamic performance of the cycloidal propeller controlled by the multi-link mechanism and pure cycloidal pitch motion is analyzed using computational fluid dynamics. The simulation results indicate that the cycloidal propeller can achieve similar performance with different control mechanisms.
