Nowadays, the fourth industrial revolution has achieved significant advancement in high technology, in which artificial intelligence has had vigorous development. In practice, facial recognition is one most essential tasks in the field of computer vision with various potential applications from security and attendance system to intelligent services. In this paper, we propose an efficient deep learning approach to facial recognition. The paper utilizes the architecture of improved FaceNet model based on MobileNetV2 backbone with SSD subsection. The improved architecture uses depth-wise separable convolution to reduce the model size and computational volume and achieve high accuracy and processing speed. To solve the problem of identifying a person entering and exiting an area and integrating on advanced mobile devices limits to (such as limited memory and on-device storage) highly mobile resources. Especially, our approach yields better results in practical application with more than 95% accuracy on a small dataset of the original face images. Obtained frame rate (25 FPS) is very favorable compared to the field of facial recognition using neural network. Besides, the deep learning based on solution could be applicable in many low-capacity hardware or optimize system’s resource. Finally, the smart automated attendance systems is successfully designed basing on the improved efficient facial recognition.

In computer vision and mobile robotics, autonomous navigation is crucial. It enables the robot to navigate its environment, which consists primarily of obstacles and moving objects. Robot navigation employing impediment detections, such as walls and pillars, is not only essential but also challenging due to real-world complications. This study provides a real-time solution to the problem of obtaining hallway scenes from an exclusive image. The authors predict a dense scene using a multi-scale fully convolutional network (FCN). The output is an image with pixel-by-pixel predictions that can be used for various navigation strategies. In addition, a method for comparing the computational cost and precision of various FCN architectures using VGG-16 is introduced. The binary semantic segmentation and optimal obstacle avoidance navigation of autonomous mobile robots are two areas in which our method outperforms the methods of competing works. The authors successfully apply perspective correction to the segmented image in order to construct the frontal view of the general area, which identifies the available moving area. The optimal obstacle avoidance strategy is comprised primarily of collision-free path planning, reasonable processing time, and smooth steering with low steering angle changes.

This research paper proposes a real-time obstacle avoidance strategy for mobile robots with a monocular camera. The approach uses a binary semantic segmentation FCN-VGG-16 to extract features from images captured by the monocular camera and estimate the position and distance of obstacles in the robot’s environment. Segmented images are used to create the frontal view of a mobile robot. Then, the optimized path planning based on the enhanced A* algorithm with a set of weighted factors, such as collision, path, and smooth cost improves the performance of a mobile robot’s path. In addition, a collision-free and smooth obstacle avoidance strategy will be devised by optimizing the cost functions. Lastly, the results of our evaluation show that the approach successfully detects and avoids static and dynamic obstacles in real time with high accuracy, efficiency, and smooth steering with low angle changes. Our approach offers a potential solution for obstacle avoidance in both global and local path planning, addressing the challenges of complex environments while minimizing the need for expensive and complicated sensor systems.

Computer vision plays a significant role in mobile robot navigation due to the wealth of information extracted from digital images. Mobile robots localize and move to the intended destination based on the captured images. Due to the complexity of the environment, obstacle avoidance still requires a complex sensor system with a high computational efficiency requirement. This study offers a real-time solution to the problem of extracting corridor scenes from a single image using a lightweight semantic segmentation model integrating with the quantization technique to reduce the numerous training parameters and computational costs. The proposed model consists of an FCN as the decoder and MobilenetV2 as the decoder (with multi-scale fusion). This combination allows us to significantly minimize computation time while achieving high precision. Moreover, in this study, we also propose to use the Balance Cross-Entropy loss function to handle diverse datasets, especially those with class imbalances and to integrate a number of techniques, for example, the Adam optimizer and Gaussian filters, to enhance segmentation performance. The results demonstrate that our model can outperform baselines across different datasets. Moreover, when being applied to practical experiments with a real mobile robot, the proposed model’s performance is still consistent, supporting the optimal path planning, allowing the mobile robot to efficiently and effectively avoid the obstacles.

This paper addresses the formidable challenge of enabling autonomous navigation in Mobile Robots (MRs), focusing on the development of advanced path planning strategies. Despite their pivotal role in diverse applications, they face challenges in dynamic settings due to limitation in existing Global Path Planning (GPP) and Local Path Planning (LPP) techniques. In response to this, we propose an innovative hybrid path planning approach that enhances the A* algorithm with a risk-aware heuristic function and integrates the Jump Point Search (JPS) technique for route optimization. Additionally, B-spline smoothing is employed for perceptually global trajectory refinement. Our approach also includes an innovative improvement to the Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) to align with the proposed enhanced A* algorithm for effective local navigation. Acknowledging the importance of high-quality input in path planning, we present substantial improvements to the IRDC-Net, a monocular-image semantic-segmentation model that we studied previously. Novel improvements include the integration of quantization and the Adam optimizer, along with the implementation of the Balanced Cross-Entropy loss function. These enhancements not only elevate the output quality of IRDC-Net but also reduce the model’s training parameters. The experimental results demonstrate the performance and viability of the proposed algorithm. Ultimately, the hybrid MR’s path planning algorithm exhibits proficiency across various tasks, particularly in addressing the challenge of evading moving obstacles to ensure the robot’s safety while adhering to the global path.
