In order to improve the subjective and objective consistency of image sharpness evaluation while meeting the requirement of image content irrelevance, this paper proposes an improved sharpness evaluation method without a reference image. First, the positions of the edge points are obtained by a Canny edge detection algorithm based on the activation mechanism. Then, the edge direction detection algorithm based on the grayscale information of the eight neighboring pixels is used to acquire the edge direction of each edge point. Further, the edge width is solved to establish the histogram of edge width. Finally, according to the performance of three distance factors based on the histogram information, the type 3 distance factor is introduced into the weighted average edge width solving model to obtain the sharpness evaluation index. The image sharpness evaluation method proposed in this paper was tested on the LIVE database. The test results were as follows: the Pearson linear correlation coefficient (CC) was 0.9346, the root mean square error (RMSE) was 5.78, the mean absolute error (MAE) was 4.9383, the Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient (ROCC) was 0.9373, and the outlier rate (OR) as 0. In addition, through a comparative analysis with two other methods and a real shooting experiment, the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method in performance were verified.

The performance of current liquid zoom systems is severely limited by their initial structure’s construction and solution. In this study, an automatic search method based on genetic algorithm (GA) was proposed for obtaining the optimal initial structure of a double liquid lens zoom optical system. This method was used to design a zoom telescopic objective with a fast response characteristic. The zoom equation of the zoom system was derived based on the Gaussian bracket method, and an initial structure evaluation function that integrated the aberration, the system length, and the smoothness of the focal power change in the liquid lenses was designed. This evaluation function was used as the fitness function in GA to automatically retrieve the optimal initial structure of the zoom system. Finally, an optical design software was used to optimize the design of the zoom system to obtain the final structure of the zoom system. Image quality analysis and tolerance analysis of the zoom system revealed that the system exhibited excellent imaging capability and could be manufactured easily. In addition, the analysis of the zoom curve revealed that the optical system exhibited a smooth continuous zooming capability.

Digital imaging systems (DISs) have been widely used in industrial process control, field monitoring, and other domains, and the autofocusing capability of DISs is a key factor affecting the imaging quality and intelligence of the system. In view of the deficiencies of focusing accuracy and speed in current imaging systems, this paper proposes a fast autofocus method of bionic vision on the basis of the liquid lens. First, the sharpness recognition network and sharpness comparison network are designed based on the consideration of a human visual focusing mechanism. Then a sharpness evaluation function combined with the distance-aware algorithm and an adaptive focusing search algorithm are proposed. These lead to the construction of our proposed autofocus method with the introduction of the memory mechanism. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, an experimental platform based on a liquid lens is built to test its performance. Experiment confirms that the proposed autofocus method has obvious advantages in robustness, accuracy, and speed compared with traditional methods.

In this paper, a dielectric elastomer (DE)-driven liquid prism enabling two-dimensional beam control is proposed. The proposed liquid prism consists of a flexible driver and a liquid cavity. The glass plate is driven by DE to change the tilt angle of the liquid-solid interface for beam steering and field of view (FOV) tuning. The maximum optical deflection angle of 8.13° and response time of 76.77 ms were measured, the variable FOV capability was also verified. The proposed liquid prism can be used in beam modulation, microscope systems.

Monocular stereo vision has excellent application prospects in the field of microrobots. On the basis of the geometric model of bifocal imaging, this paper proposes a monocular depth perception method by liquid zoom imaging. Firstly, the configuration of a monocular liquid vision system for depth measurement is presented, and the working mechanism of the system is analyzed through theoretical derivation. Then, to eliminate the influence of optical axis drift induced by the liquid gravity factor on the measurement results, the target image area is used as the calculation feature instead of the image vector length. A target area calculation method based on chain code classification and strip segmentation is proposed. Furthermore, in response to the fluctuation problem of liquid lens focal power caused by factors such as temperature and object distance, a dynamic focal length model of the liquid zoom imaging system is constructed after precise calibration of the focal power function. Finally, a testing experiment is designed to validate the proposed method. The experimental results show that the average error of depth perception methods is 4.30%, and its measurement time is only on the millisecond scale. Meanwhile, the proposed method has good generalization performance.
