The present study hypothesis resulted in the identification of a viable system of indicators that might play an important role in the measurement of sustainable development. The main purpose of our research is the development of a watershed sustainability index and its application for the Motru River basin. This catchment area covers an area of 1,895 km2 within southwestern Romania. Applying the watershed sustainability index was based on the equal weighting scheme in order to aggregate the parameters (water availability per capita, variation of BOD, variation in the ratio of the agricultural area and the urban population, life quality index, and education index). Considering that basin management is a dynamic and holistic process, the state-pressure-response model was applied to the four components in a matrix scheme. As a result, for the Motru River basin, the obtained values of the watershed sustainability index were: 0.36 for five years and 0.51 for 10 years. The indicators with the lowest scores were hydrology and policy-education (0.17), while the environment indicator scored the highest (0.75). Applied to different time intervals, the watershed sustainability index emphasizes the evolution of watershed sustainability in order to help stakeholders and water managers in the decision-making process.

Evaluation of grazing impacts on land degradation processes is a difficult task due to the heterogeneity and complex interacting factors involved. In this paper, we designed a new methodology based on a predictive index of grazing susceptibility to land degradation index (GSLDI) built on artificial intelligence to assess land degradation susceptibility in areas affected by small ruminants (SRs) of sheep and goats grazing. The data for model training, validation, and testing consisted of sampling points (erosion and no-erosion) taken from aerial imagery. Seventeen environmental factors (e.g., derivatives of the digital elevation model, small ruminants’ stock), and 55 subsequent attributes (e.g., classes/features) were assigned to each sampling point. The impact of SRs stock density on the land degradation process has been evaluated and estimated with two extreme SRs’ density scenarios: absence (no stock), and double density (overstocking). We applied the GSLDI methodology to the Curvature Subcarpathians, a region that experiences the highest erosion rates in Romania, and found that SRs grazing is not the major contributor to land degradation, accounting for only 4.6%. This methodology could be replicated in other steep slope grazing areas as a tool to assess and predict susceptible to land degradation, and to establish common strategies for sustainable land-use practices.

Drought is an extremely negative phenomenon that is becoming increasingly frequent in the southern part of Romania (Oltenia Plain). An insufficiency or lack of precipitation, especially in the warm season, induces a state of stress on the vegetation, damaging it prematurely and decreasing the agricultural yield. Integrating satellite observations into research inventories has practical applications for drought dynamics in plain regions and may significantly contribute to its agricultural sustainability. The aim of our study was to highlight the relationship between drought and vegetation health in the central parts of the Oltenia Plain, namely, the Băilești Plain and Nedeia Plain. We used four different indices (SPI/SPI-CDF-ISND, SPEI, NDVI, NDMI) in order to assess the occurrence of meteorological and agricultural drought and gained a wider picture regarding past and future trends. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of vegetation health index trends and their implications for climate change. The selected indices were the most suitable for assessing drought according to the literature, and combining all of them helped us to obtain a full picture of drought’s impact on vegetation.

In accordance with the 2030 Agenda, the prosperity of tourist destinations holds a crucial role in the sustainable development of urban areas. Tourism represents an imperative solution in transitioning from survival to success after the COVID-19 pandemic. The stakeholders in the field should introduce new tourism forms that enable a more comprehensive strategy for managing and developing responsible tourism, bringing into focus new skills, resources, and levels for change to develop resilience, urban community satisfaction, and the unique intrinsic attraction of each tourist destination in Romania. This study develops a model of prosperity for urban tourist destinations, which can be applied to medium-large cities in Romania. We propose for the city of Craiova the use and identification of four spheres of sustainability, which in turn have a set of 17 indicators. The research method used to determine the indicators has two stages: (1) the analysis of the specialized literature to identify the appropriate indicators for an urban destination and (2) statistical analyzes and interviews with internal stakeholders (residents), which present their tourist perspective of the city. This article tackles an innovative concept, called prosperity and innovation in Craiova tourism, which can be implemented in all tourism niches and brings new development perspectives that correspond to the norms of sustainable development and their direction towards sustainability. The article addresses the concept of prosperity in tourism and contains information about: the definition of prosperity, the concept of prosperity (an engine of innovation in tourism and its implications), but also perspectives for a prosperous tourism policy in Craiova tourism.
