The rapid increase in global energy demand and the depletion of fossil fuels highlight the importance of biomass as a renewable energy source. Biomass, especially agricultural by-products rich in hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, offers a sustainable alternative for producing fuels and value-added products. The generation of power, heat, and biofuels from biomass has gained increasing significance in today’s energy landscape. This review explores the potential of advanced biomass conversion technologies, with a focus on thermochemical and biochemical processes as key methods for optimizing agricultural waste management strategies. It examines these technologies for converting agricultural wastes into bioenergy, such as biogas, syngas, bio-oil, biochar, and digestate, while detailing their operational parameters, technological principles, and implementation prospects. While biological processes are limited by long processing times and low yields, thermochemical methods are challenged by high processing costs and temperature requirements. The review also compares the advantages and challenges of each method to assess their overall effectiveness and suitability. Further research in feedstock pretreatment, catalyst development, and system optimization is essential for advancing biofuel production.

Nutrient management is always a great concern for better crop production. The optimized use of nutrients plays a key role in sustainable crop production, which is a major global challenge as it depends mainly on synthetic fertilizers. A novel fertilizer approach is required that can boost agricultural system production while being more ecologically friendly than synthetic fertilizers. As nanotechnology has left no field untouched, including agriculture, by its scientific innovations. The use of nanofertilizers in agriculture is in the early stage of development, but they appear to have significant potential in different ways, such as increased nutrient-use efficiency, the slow release of nutrients to prevent nutrient loss, targeted delivery, improved abiotic stress tolerance, etc. This review summarizes the current knowledge on various developments in the design and formulation of nanoparticles used as nanofertilizers, their types, their mode of application, and their potential impacts on agricultural crops. The main emphasis is given on the potential benefits of nanofertilizers, and we highlight the current limitations and future challenges related to the wide-scale application before field applications. In particular, the unprecedent release of these nanomaterials into the environment may jeopardize human health and the ecosystem. As the green revolution has occurred, the production of food grains has increased at the cost of the disproportionate use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which have severely damaged our ecosystem. We need to make sure that the use of these nanofertilizers reduces environmental damage, rather than increasing it. Therefore, future studies should also check the environmental risks associated with these nanofertilizers, if there are any; moreover, it should focus on green manufactured and biosynthesized nanofertilizers, as well as their safety, bioavailability, and toxicity issues, to safeguard their application for sustainable agriculture environments.

Modification of active membrane surface is an auspicious way to enhance the membrane performance. In our study, commercially available composite polyamide Nanofiltration (NF) membrane was modified by immobilizing silver doped TiO2 (Ag-TiO2) nanoparticles. Ag-TiO2 with different nanoparticles concentration (0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 wt. %) were coated on the surface of membrane by dip coating method. The evidence of successful coating was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images. Moreover the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), contact angle measurement and permeation tests were carried out in order to evaluate the membrane performance after coating. The antifouling property of modified membrane was evaluated for Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) and Gram negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria by colony counting method. The results indicated that the modified membranes keep efficient anti-bacterial efficacy against both type of bacteria. The bacterial growth reduced approximately 75% and 73% on modified membrane as compared to unmodified membrane for E.coli and B.subtilis respectively. Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles imbedded nanofiltration membranes inhibit the biofilm formation and facilitate in cleaning membrane surface without using excessive chemical agents.
