Information

Marià Alemany (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, 1946) graduated (1968) and received a doctorate (1972) in Sciences (Biology) from U Barcelona. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Washington University (St Louis MO USA, 1973–1974). He was a tenured assistant professor of General Physiology in 1974; associate professor of Biochemistry in 1977; full professor of Biochemistry and Mol. Biol. in 1981–present, and also a full professor of Nutrition and Food Science since 2001. He has been a professor at the Universities of Balearic Islands (1977–1981), Tarragona (1981–1986), and Barcelona (1969–1973, 1974–1977, 1986–present). He was given EASO’s Wassermann Award, and the Monturiol Medal from the Generalitat of Catalonia (2003). He is the author of 5 books including a novel, about 390 book chapters, and papers. He has filed 6 patents, 2 of which were exploited by a spinoff (Oleoyl-Estrone Developments) he created and directed (2001–2008). His scientific interests were early centered on energy and amino acid metabolism, initially in the mammal fetal–maternal unit. From the 1980s, he studied obesity and metabolic syndrome. Currently, he is focused on steroid hormone control of metabolic syndrome (and adipose tissue), and how amino acids, glucose, lactate, and glycerol are handled under conditions of excess energy availability. In 2016, he retired and was made professor emeritus. He remains active, writing analytical reviews on the regulation of energy partition and metabolic syndrome.
