Animal diseases remain a major constraint to livestock productivity and public health, necessitating accurate, early diagnostic methods. This review examines the classification and mechanisms of diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers in veterinary medicine and evaluates how advanced technologies enable their discovery. Mechanistically, biomarkers function as molecular indicators of disease presence, progression, or therapeutic response, and are essential in species where clinical signs often appear late or are non-specific. We detail the contribution of high-throughput omics platforms, genomics (NGS, RNA-Seq), proteomics (LC-MS/MS, DIGE), and metabolomics (NMR, LC-MS/MS) in identifying disease-specific molecular signatures. Emerging technologies, including CRISPR/Cas9, AI-enhanced imaging, aptamer-based biosensors, and microfluidic devices, show significant diagnostic potential. Case studies, including canine melanoma, bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC), and congenital portosystemic shunts in dogs, illustrate the real-world applicability of biomarkers. Challenges such as a lack of standardization, species variability, and poor clinical translation are acknowledged. The review concludes that integrating biomarker mechanisms with advanced analytical technologies is key to advancing veterinary diagnostics and disease control.

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) contamination in milk and dairy products poses a significant global concern due to its severe health risks to humans. Sensitive and specific detection of AFM1 has emerged as the most effective strategy for mitigating these health risks. Aptamers are regarded as ideal biorecognition elements for AFM1 monitoring owing to their small size, ease of production, excellent affinity and specificity, high stability, and low immunogenicity. Herein, we review the advancements in SELEX-based aptamer selection and the recent development of aptasensors for AFM1 from 2020 to 2025 for the first time. Additionally, the progress in signal transduction strategies, underlying mechanisms, and the design of portable devices are highlighted. Furthermore, we critically examine and summarize the prospects, challenges, and future trends in aptasensor technology, with a particular emphasis on its potential for real-world application and commercialization.

Aspergillosis is the name given to the spectrum of diseases caused by the genus Aspergillus. Research on aspergillosis has shown a progressive expansion over the past decades, largely due to the rise in the number of immunocompromised individuals who are at risk for the infection. Nanotechnology provides innovative tools in the medicine, diagnosis, and treatment. The unique properties of nanomaterials like small size in the nanoscale have attracted researchers to explore their potential, especially in medical diagnostics. Aptamers, considered as chemical antibody, are short, single-stranded oligonucleotide molecules with high affinity and specificity to interact with target molecules even superior to antibody. Accordingly, development of nanomaterials-based biosensors technology such as immunosensors and aptasensors against Aspergillus and Aspergillosis is of great significance and urgency. In this book chapter, we comprehensively introduce and analyze the recent progress of nanomaterials-based biosensors against Aspergillus and Aspergillosis. In addition, we reveal the challenges and provide our opinion in future opportunities for such sensing platform development. Ultimately, conclusion and future prospects are highlighted and summarized.

Sulforaphane (SFN), a bioactive compound sourced from cruciferous vegetables, offers significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits yet, its stability in animal feed is a challenge. Nanotechnology-based encapsulation, specifically ionic gelation, has demonstrated efficacy in improving the stability and bioavailability of SFN. This review examines the application of natural polymers such as chitosan and alginate in ionic gelation for the encapsulation of SFN. It also discusses how these polymers can prevent SFN from degrading while traversing the digestive tract. Encapsulated SFN has shown enhanced nutritional absorption, elevated immune responses, and reduced oxidative stress in animals. However, challenges persist in identifying optimal methods for encapsulating various species, including enhancing encapsulation effectiveness, particle size, and controlled release mechanisms. Additionally, regulatory concerns regarding the safety and environmental impacts of nanoparticles in feed must be addressed. Future research should focus on improving encapsulation techniques and ensuring the safe application of SFN-loaded nanocarriers in livestock feed.

This review examines the application of natural polymers such as chitosan and alginate in ionic gelation for the encapsulation of SFN. It also discusses how these polymers can prevent SFN from degrading while traversing the digestive tract. Encapsulation strategies for SFN have been associated with improved bioavailability, with absorption reported in experimental modules, to modulate immune-related and oxidative-stress pathways.
