Purpose: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists have shown potential in managing eating disorders (EDs). Recent studies highlight their effects on pathophysiological pathways, indicating their therapeutic promise, particularly for binge eating disorder (BED). This systematic review evaluates the therapeutic effects of GLP-1 agonists on BED, focusing on weight management and eating behaviors. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, along with manual searches, identified studies assessing GLP-1 agonists in BED patients up to November 8, 2024. Observational studies and clinical trials meeting inclusion criteria were analyzed. Results: Five studies (182 participants) were included. Patients receiving GLP-1 agonists experienced greater weight loss (− 3.81 kg; 95% CI − 5.14 to − 2.49; p < 0.01, I 2: 59.88%) compared to controls. GLP-1 agonists significantly reduced BMI (− 1.48 kg/m2) and waist circumference (− 3.14 cm). Binge Eating Scale (BES) scores improved significantly (− 8.14 points; 95% CI − 13.13 to − 3.15; p < 0.01), though heterogeneity was noted. Conclusions: This review underscores the potential role of GLP-1 agonists in BED management. However, given the limited data, especially concerning EDs other than BED and the long-term effects of these medications, further comprehensive clinical trials are recommended to evaluate the impact of various GLP-1 agonists on different EDs across diverse demographic groups. Level of evidence: Level I, randomized controlled trials.

Dietitians and nutritionists play a key role in optimizing the nutritional status of the patients before and after performing surgery. The importance of nutrition is often overlooked because health professionals lack knowledge about nutritional problems, structured protocols for cooperation between surgeons and clinical nutritionists do not exist, dedicated resources are lacking, and preoperative and postoperative nutrition care protocols have not been disseminated. The purpose of this review is to describe various nutrition care guidelines for use during preoperative and postoperative periods for surgical patients to enhance recovery after surgery based on a review of the literature. It should help nutritionists and surgeons to make appropriate decisions on the management during preoperative and postoperative care, as well as facilitating the understanding and application of medical nutrition therapy.

Background: In bariatric surgery, inflammatory biomarkers predict outcomes. Limited research on complete blood cell (CBC) markers stresses the need for correlation study. This research explores links between CBC inflammatory markers, body changes, and fatty liver grades in Iranian bariatric patients. Materials and methods: This retrospective longitudinal study examined 237 bariatric surgery patients who satisfied the inclusion criteria and were deemed eligible for participation. These criteria encompassed patients who had undergone sleeve or mini-bypass surgery and were aged between 18 and 65 years. The study gathered demographic data, pre and post-surgery changes in CBC inflammatory biomarkers [neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), MPV-to-platelet count ratio (MPV/PC), and red cell distribution width (RDW)] and fatty liver grades. Additionally, it recorded pre and post-surgery changes in body composition, such as weight, muscle mass (MM), fat mass (FM), and fat-free mass (FFM). Results: The pre-surgery RDW marker significantly associated with FM changes, highlighting its predictive nature. While no significant association was found between changes in patients’ fatty liver grade and baseline marker values, it’s worth noting that individuals with higher MM at 3 months achieved a fatty liver grade of zero. Also, at 6 months, higher FFM and MM were also associated with reaching a fatty liver grade of zero. Conclusions: While the retrospective design of this study limits its findings to existing clinical data, future prospective research should collect additional samples, extend the observation time, and examine the long-term predictive value of these markers.
