State-of-art quantum key distribution (QKD) systems are performed with several GHz pulse rates, meanwhile privacy amplification (PA) with large scale inputs has to be performed to generate the final secure keys with quantified security. In this paper, we propose a fast Fourier transform (FFT) enhanced high-speed and large-scale (HiLS) PA scheme on commercial CPU platform without increasing dedicated computational devices. The long input weak secure key is divided into many blocks and the random seed for constructing Toeplitz matrix is shuffled to multiple sub-sequences respectively, then PA procedures are parallel implemented for all sub-key blocks with correlated sub-sequences, afterwards, the outcomes are merged as the final secure key. When the input scale is 128 Mb, our proposed HiLS PA scheme reaches 71.16 Mbps, 54.08 Mbps and 39.15 Mbps with the compression ratio equals to 0.125, 0.25 and 0.375 respectively, resulting achievable secure key generation rates close to the asymptotic limit. HiLS PA scheme can be applied to 10 GHz QKD systems with even larger input scales and the evaluated throughput is around 32.49 Mbps with the compression ratio equals to 0.125 and the input scale of 1 Gb, which is ten times larger than the previous works for QKD systems. Furthermore, with the limited computational resources, the achieved throughput of HiLS PA scheme is 0.44 Mbps with the compression ratio equals to 0.125, when the input scale equals up to 128 Gb. In theory, the PA of the randomness extraction in quantum random number generation (QRNG) is same as the PA procedure in QKD, and our work can also be efficiently performed in high-speed QRNG.

The quantum entanglement distribution network, serviced as the communication infrastructure which distributes quantum information among remote users, enables many applications beyond the reach of classical networks. Recently, the applications such as quantum key distribution and quantum secure direct communication, have been successfully demonstrated in the quantum entanglement distribution network. In this article, we propose a multi-user round-trip quantum clock synchronization (QCS) scheme in the quantum network, which can be implemented with one single entangled photon source located at the server. The server distributes the entangled photons to remote multiple users with the wavelength division multiplexing strategy, and each user feeds partial received photons back to the server. The clock difference between the server and each user is calculated from the one-way and round-trip propagation times, which are determined according to the time correlation of entangled photons. Afterwards, the demonstration has been conducted between the server and a user over a 75-km-long fiber link, where the measured clock difference uncertainty is 4.45 ps, and the time deviation is 426 fs with an average time of 4000 s. Furthermore, the proposed QCS scheme is linearly scalable to many users, with respect to user hardware and number of deployed fibers.

Information reconciliation (IR) corrects the errors in sifted keys and ensures the correctness of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. Polar codes-based IR schemes can achieve high reconciliation efficiency; however, the incidental high frame error rate decreases the secure key rate of QKD systems. In this article, we propose a Shannon-limit approached (SLA) IR scheme, which mainly contains two phases: the forward reconciliation phase and the acknowledgment reconciliation phase. In the forward reconciliation phase, the sifted key is divided into sub-blocks and performed with the improved block checked successive cancellation list decoder of polar codes. Afterward, only the failure corrected sub-blocks perform the additional acknowledgment reconciliation phase, which decreases the frame error rate of the SLA IR scheme. The experimental results show that the overall failure probability of SLA IR scheme is decreased to $$10^{-8}$$ 10 - 8 and the efficiency is improved to 1.091 with the IR block length of 128 Mb. Furthermore, the efficiency of the proposed SLA IR scheme is 1.055, approached to Shannon limit, when the quantum bit error rate is 0.02 and the input scale of 1 Gb, which is hundred times larger than the state-of-the-art implemented polar codes-based IR schemes.

Rapidly and randomly drifted reference frames will shorten the transmission distance and decrease the secure key rate of realistic quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. In this article, we present a free-running reference-frame-independent (RFI) QKD scheme, where measurement events are classified into multiple slices with similar estimated classification parameter. We perform the free-running RFI QKD experiment with a fiber link of 100 km and reference frame misalignment more than 29 periods in 50.7 h. A key rate as high as 742.98 bps is achieved at the total loss of 31.5 dB benefiting from both the new protocol design and the 80 MHz repetition rate system in use. Our system runs 50.7 h freely without any reference frame alignment. In the experiment, the misalignment variation rate tolerance of the experiment is 0.262 rad/s, and could be optimized to 1.309 rad/s. Therefore, our free-running RFI scheme can be efficiently adapted into the satellite-to-ground and drone-based mobile communication scenarios.

Information reconciliation (IR), which corrects the errors in the sifted keys, directly determines the secure key rate and the link distance of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. In this paper, we propose an appending information reconciliation (AIR) scheme based on polar codes, which achieves high efficiency and ultralow failure probability simultaneously, by gradually disclosing the bit values of the polarized channels with high error probability. The experimental results show that the efficiency of the proposed AIR scheme is closer to the Shannon limit, compared with the state-of-the-art implemented polar-code-based IR schemes, with the overall failure probability around 10−8, especially when performed with smaller block sizes. Moreover, the efficiency of the proposed AIR scheme is 1.046, when the block size is 1 Gb and the quantum bit error rate of 0.02. Therefore, the proposed AIR scheme can further eradicate the performance gap between theory and implementation for QKD systems.

The quantum key distribution (QKD) technology is achieving a growing interest in both the scientific and industrial communities. Based on principles of quantum mechanics, it can provide unconditional security in key exchanges over end-to-end communication channels. Information-theoretically secure (ITS) authentication, the compulsory procedure of QKD systems, avoids the man-in-the-middle attack during the security key generation. In this paper, we propose a novel family of almost strongly universal (ASU) hash functions based on number-theoretic transforms (N-ASU), and prove that N-ASU hash functions can meet the high security requirement of an ITS authentication procedure. With such N-ASU hash functions, we propose a novel efficient NTT-based authentication algorithm (N-Auth) for QKD systems. Such a solution offers nearly the same security guarantees provided by the available authentication algorithms built upon ASU hash functions, but is characterized by a much lower computational complexity. The experimental results show that the N-Auth algorithm can fully meet the real-time and high-performance demands of modern 10-GHz QKD systems, making it a viable solution for the implementation of industrial-strength unconditionally secure broadband communication solutions.
