A novel robust control design is proposed for aircraft engines. The engine is modeled as an uncertain dynamic system, whose uncertainty may be (possibly fast) time-varying. The possible value of the uncertainty is prescribed to be within fuzzy sets. This distinguishes our modeling from the Takagi–Sugeno inference system. The uncertainty is divided into matched and mismatched portions. While the matched uncertainty lies within the range space of the input matrix, the mismatched uncertainty falls outside, which poses a significant challenge for the control design. The objective is to propose a new robust control design for aircraft engines, which are subject to mismatched uncertainty. A robust control, which is deterministic and is not IF–THEN fuzzy rule-based, is designed. The control design parameter needs to be feasible, i.e., within a prescribed range. Some prescribed deterministic performances of the system are guaranteed. By taking the control cost and the performance threshold into consideration, which is under the influence of both matched and mismatched uncertainty, the unique optimal choice of the design parameter is proposed. As a result, this control design delicately blends optimality with mismatched uncertainty. This design is applied to a turbofan engine. Hardware-in-the-loop laboratory testing in the flight envelope demonstrates the superiority of the control design.

This article presents a novel robust control scheme for nonlinear systems subject to asymmetric inequality saturation, modeling errors, and noise. The control scheme aims to achieve dynamic tracking targets while ensuring safe and low-noise operation of aero-engines. First, diffeomorphism theory is incorporated using the tangent function to establish an invertible mapping between a bounded input and an unbounded auxiliary input. In addition, the mapping can suppress noise. Second, a robust tracking control has been proposed for the reconstructed unbounded auxiliary system. The control consists of two parts: one to reduce nonlinearities, and the other to enhance tracking accuracy. Consequently, even under severe conditions, such as input saturation, the aero-engine system can guarantee uniform boundedness and uniform ultimate boundedness. Through numerical simulations and hardware-in-the-loop experiments, it is demonstrated that the diffeomorphism-based robust control enables smooth operation of the turbofan engine within safety limits, while maintaining high control quality across the complete flight envelope.

This paper presents a data-based Takagi-Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy modeling approach for aircraft engines in the flight envelope. We propose a series of T–S fuzzy models for engines with flight conditions as premises and engine linear dynamic models as consequences. By engine dynamic clustering, we determine rough T–S fuzzy models to approximate the nonlinear dynamics of engines in the flight envelope. After that, the maximum–minimum distance-based fuzzy c-means (MMD-FCM) algorithm comes to refine the fuzzy rules and the least square method (LSM) comes to identify premise parameters for each single rough model. The proposed MMD-FCM algorithm guarantees the refined results are stable and reasonable, and the identification improves the accuracy of the steady and transient phases. The model verification showed that the T–S fuzzy models for engines had a high accuracy with a steady error less than 5%, and that the root mean squared error (RMSE) of transient errors was less than 8 × 10−4 with good generalization ability in the flight envelope.

The variable cycle engine selects the appropriate working mode through mode switch to meet the requirements of low specific fuel consumption and high unit thrust. When the variable cycle engine switches between different modes, it should ensure the smooth transition of working modes and obtain the expected performance at the same time. Consequently, a general control schedule design method for mode switch is investigated in this paper. The feasible switching domains of single-bypass working mode and double-bypass working modes are obtained based on multifurcating tree traversal, and the switching point in the feasible switching domain is determined by solving the collaboration-game optimization problem based on sequential quadratic programming (SQP). Finally, the schedule of control variables is designed to realize smooth and fast switching between different working modes of variable cycle engine. The simulations show that based on the general control schedule of mode switch proposed in this paper, smooth transition of thrust and rotor speed can be achieved under the premise of safe engine operation, with small fluctuations and a short switching time, which is about 2.5 s.
