Biography

Luigi Messori was born in Florence, on March 25, 1958. He received his PhD in Chemical Sciences (1987) and became an Assistant Professor (1990) and then Associate Professor (2004), in General and Inorganic Chemistry. He is a member of the Department of Chemistry, University of Florence. His main research interests are in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry and metals in medicine. In his initial work, he studied the solution behavior of metalloproteins, mainly by paramagnetic NMR, with emphasis on metal carrier proteins (transferrins and metallothioneins) and on selected zinc enzymes (carbonic anhydrase, carboxypeptidase). Later on, starting from 1995, his research interests moved to consider primarily the role of metal ions in medicine. In particular, he directed his attention towards antitumor metal-based drugs (mainly ruthenium and gold compounds) and their interactions with nucleic acids and proteins. More recently, his studies exploited proteomics and metallomics methods to disclose the molecular mechanisms of metal-based drugs at the cellular level. He has been involved in various COST actions dealing with metal-based drugs (D8, D20, D39, CM1105) with different roles. He has given several lectures in Italy and abroad on the above topics. He is author of more than 300 papers, published in international scientific journals.
