Since the end of 2014, Dr. Nels Thevs has headed the Central Asia Office of World Agroforestry (ICRAF) in Bishkek. In this position, he works on different agroforestry systems across Central Asia, with a strong focus on agroforestry in irrigated agriculture and the impact of agroforestry on water resources, farm income, and agroforestry as an element of forest landscape restoration. Before moving to Bishkek, he was a Scientist at the University of Greifswald in Germany with projects in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and China (Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia) that centered around sustainable land use and water resource management. Specific project areas included the Ili Delta, Syr Darya, Amu Darya, and Tarim River basins, among others. These river- and wetland-related activities are still part of Dr. Thevs’ work today. In addition to research work at the University of Greifswald, he was engaged in teaching international students in the fields of soil sciences and remote sensing.
