Quality of life (QOL) is enhanced by the satisfaction derived from leisure time. Much of the evidence for this relationship comes from research in Western nations. In contrast, this study explores the links between leisure satisfaction and QOL in China using the Leisure Satisfaction Scale (LSS) and the short form of the World Health Organization Quality of Life scale (WHOQOL-BREF). Data were collected from 940 urban Chinese in the City of Ningbo. We used multivariate multiple linear regression to determine whether leisure satisfaction and demographic variables are predictors of QOL. Results indicate that the LSS predicts all the QOL domains. Nonetheless, when the LSS dimensions are analyzed separately, only Psychological Satisfaction and Aesthetic Satisfaction predict each of the four WHOQOL-BREF domains. Among the demographic variables, only income predicts all WHOQOL-BREF domains, whereas other demographic variables predict some of the domains. This study adds new insights to understand relationships between leisure satisfaction, QOL, and demographic variables in the non-Western world.

In contemporary China, public spaces are often sites for group leisure activities. In the last ten years, the most notable group leisure activity is Guangchangwu (广场舞) which translates as dancing in the public squares. It has become a unique leisure practice mainly for older women’s participation in urban China. Guangchangwu (GGW) is a new form of daily leisure activity which has been overlooked by leisure scholars. By means of studying this unique leisure activity, this paper explores the spatial practice of older women engaged in GGW in the city of Guangzhou. Results reveal that older women engage in GGW to cope with the scarcity of public spaces, the commercialization of leisure spaces, the alienation of urban life, and the pervasive sense of meaninglessness amidst urbanization. Moreover, China’s grooving grannies acquire many benefits from their participation in GGW, such as health benefits, self-actualization, intergenerational communication, and happiness; not to mention that, as a result of GGW’s inclusivity, there is an increase on the sense of community, carnival atmosphere, and acceptance of diverse performers. Therefore, this study contributes to both leisure research and public research from a cross-cultural perspective, and shows that older women use GGW to practice and reconstruct their identities by embedding themselves within public spaces.

Hainan, as a popular tourism destination, is well-promoted by the Chinese central government. In particular, both central and local governments encourage Hainan’s sport tourism-related professionals to develop sport tourism as one of the most important tourist activities in Hainan. However, previous research has not reported on Hainan’s sport tourism strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as a tourism destination or a sports event host. This study uses SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the context of Hainan’s sport tourism development. A total of 12 dimensions, including branding, culture, finance, infrastructure, location, market, nature, policy, product, specialty, sustainability, and tourist were generated from our data analysis. In addition, a total of five future directions, including emphasizing event-oriented sport tourism, prioritizing sport motivation, identifying major sport tourism markets, making the rational use of sport tourism resources, and nurturing sport culture, are recommended as a result of this study.

Based on the support of governmental policies and the rapid growth of China’s economic development, residents’ living standards, and tourism consumption demand, cruise tourism has continuously developed and its service level has gradually improved, which have become the main driving forces for the sustainable growth of China’s cruise tourism industry. This paper took Shenzhen Shekou Port (SSP) as a research site and used an online text analysis method by Rost Content Mining 6 software to analyze 2552 Ctrip travel network, and then did further study through face to face interviews from the perspective of “tourists source” and “procurement” in the value chain theory. Only by understanding the developing trend of cruise tourists can we cultivate cruise culture, expand cruise tourism market, and finally realize the benign development of cruise tourism. The research results show that the cruise business in Shenzhen should strengthen the senior citizens market and marketing to kids and parents, and improve the satisfaction of cruise passengers in terms of enriching entertainment facilities, elevating service quality, and upgrading duty-free shopping centers. This paper not only focused on the study of cruise tourists in Southern China, but also enriches the research of the cruise value chain.

The degree to which individuals are satisfied with their leisure strongly relates to and may substantially influence numerous other aspects of their lives. Nevertheless, although past research has shown that, in some cases, leisure satisfaction is associated with demographic, psychosocial, and/or cultural variables, the comparative efficacy of predictive variables is underdetermined, especially in non-Western societies. Hence, the purpose of this study is to determine which, among several variables measured in a sample of individuals from Taiwan, best predict leisure satisfaction. We focus, in particular, on cultural consonance in leisure, the degree to which individuals participate in leisure activities that are culturally accepted as important to a good quality of life. Multiple regression and dominance analysis indicate that cultural consonance in leisure, perceived stress, self-rated health, and community satisfaction predict leisure satisfaction better than demographics or leisure constraints.

Satisfaction with leisure contributes to life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, health, and overall wellbeing. It is not clear, however, how individuals develop expectations for satisfaction with their leisure experiences. In this study, we propose a cultural basis for leisure expectations. In particular, we model cultural consonance in leisure, the degree to which individuals, in their own behavior, match cultural conventions for appropriate or favored leisure, as a mediator between leisure constraints and leisure satisfaction based on data from urban, suburban, and rural Taiwan. We then apply the same model to data previously gathered in Mainland China and Taiwan. Results indicate that the new model fits all three data sets well and that, under most conditions, cultural consonance mediates the relationship between leisure constraints and leisure satisfaction.
