The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) has been observing aerosol optical depth (AOD), which is a critical parameter in air pollution and climate change, for more than 7 years since 2012. Due to limited and uneven distribution of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) station in China, the independent data from the Campaign on Atmospheric Aerosol Research Network of China (CARE-China) was used to evaluate the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) VIIRS AOD products in six typical sites and analyze the influence of the aerosol model selection process in five subregions, particularly for dust. Compared with ground-based observations, the performance of all retrievals (except the Shapotou (SPT) site) is similar to other previous studies on a global scale. However, the results illustrate that the AOD retrievals with the dust model showed poor consistency with a regression equation as y = 0.312x + 0.086, while the retrievals obtained from the other models perform much better with a regression equation as y = 0.783x + 0.119. The poor AOD retrieval with the dust model was also verified by a comparison with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol product. The results show they have a lower correlation coefficient (R) and a higher mean relative error (MRE) when the aerosol model used in the retrieval is identified as dust. According to the Ultraviolet Aerosol Index (UVAI), the frequency of dust type over southern China is inconsistent with the actual atmospheric condition. In addition, a comparison of ground-based Ångström exponent (α) values yields an unexpected result that the dust model percentage exceed 40% when α < 1.0, and the mean α shows a high value of ~0.75. Meanwhile, the α peak value (~1.1) of the “dust” model determined by a satellite retravel algorithm indicate there is some problem in the dust model selection process. This mismatching of the aerosol model may partly explain the low accuracy at the SPT and the systemic biases in regional and global validations.

Accurate determination of the spatial distribution of coastal wetlands is crucial for the management and conservation of ecosystems. Feature selection methods based on the Jeffries-Matusita (J-M) method include J-M distance with simple average ranking (JMave), J-M distance based on weights and correlations (JMimproved), and heuristic J-M distance (JMmc). However, as the impacts of these methods on wetland classification are different, their applicability has rarely been investigated. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) and random forest (RF) classifier, this is a comparative analysis of the applicability of the JMave, JMimproved, and JMmc methods. The results show that the three methods compress feature dimensions and retain all feature types as much as possible. JMmc exhibits the most significant compression from a value of 35 to 15 (57.14%), which is 37.14% and 40% more compressed than JMave and JMimproved, respectively. Moreover, they produce comparable classification results, with an overall classification accuracy of 90.20 ± 0.19% and a Kappa coefficient of 88.80 ± 0.22%. However, different methods had their own advantages for the classification of different land classes. Specifically, JMave has a better classification only in cropland, while JMmc is advantageous for recognizing water bodies, tidal flats, and aquaculture. While JMimproved failed to retain vegetation and mangrove features, it enables a better depiction of the mangroves, salt pans, and vegetation classes. Both JMave and JMimproved rearrange features based on J-M distance, while JMmc places more emphasis on feature selection. As a result, there can be significant differences in feature subsets among these three methods. Therefore, the comparative analysis of these three methods further elucidates the importance of J-M distance in feature selection, demonstrating the significant potential of J-M distance-based feature selection methods in wetland classification.

Aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been widely used to estimate near-surface particulate matter (PM). In this study, ground-measured data from the Campaign on Atmospheric Aerosol Research network of China (CARE-China) and the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) were used to evaluate the accuracy of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) AOD data for different aerosol types. These four aerosol types were from dust, smoke, urban, and uncertain and a fifth “type” was included for unclassified (i.e., total) aerosols. The correlation for dust aerosol was the worst (R2 = 0.15), whereas the correlations for smoke and urban types were better (R2 values of 0.69 and 0.55, respectively). The mixed-effects model was used to estimate the PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH), Sichuan–Chongqing (SC), the Pearl River Delta (PRD), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and the Middle Yangtze River (MYR) using the classified aerosol type and unclassified aerosol type methods. The results suggest that the cross validation (CV) of different aerosol types has higher correlation coefficients than that of the unclassified aerosol type. For example, the R2 values for dust, smoke, urban, uncertain, and unclassified aerosol types BTH were 0.76, 0.85, 0.82, 0.82, and 0.78, respectively. Compared with the daily PM2.5 concentrations, the air quality levels estimated using the classified aerosol type method were consistent with ground-measured PM2.5, and the relative error was low (most RE was within ±20%). The classified aerosol type method improved the accuracy of the PM2.5 estimation compared to the unclassified method, although there was an overestimation or underestimation in some regions. The seasonal distribution of PM2.5 was analyzed and the PM2.5 concentrations were high during winter, low during summer, and moderate during spring and autumn. Spatially, the higher PM2.5 concentrations were predominantly distributed in areas of human activity and industrial areas.

Leaf area index (LAI) is a key parameter for characterizing the dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems, and is also one of the important structural parameters that can be retrieved from remote sensing (RS) data. LAI over mountainous areas, however, is still difficult to retrieve reliably due to the topographical variation that introduces significant uncertainties into observed reflectance. In this paper, we proposed a new scheme to estimate topographic influence on ratio-based vegetation indices (VIs) from diffuse radiation, which is not yet adequately considered in existing topographic correction schemes. In our scheme, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) LiDAR data were first used to model the sky view factor and terrain view factor of target pixels in a slope coordinate system. Based on these view factors, the total incident solar radiation on slope (ISRS) was corrected, specifically for the diffuse sky irradiance and adjacent terrain-reflected irradiance over complex terrains. we then recalculated the multispectral reflectance of UAV images and evaluated the topographic effects on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) because the magnitudes of correction on red and near-infrared reflectances are quite different. Finally, large-scale LAI distribution was retrieved by empirical models developed from the relationships between terrain-corrected NDVI and field-measured LAI. Our results show that the proposed topographic correction scheme can significantly improve the LAI retrievals over a growing season. Given that forests are widely distributed in complex terrains around the globe, this study would have significance in improving the mapping of global LAI that is essential for terrestrial carbon cycle studies.

Satellite aerosol products are pivotal in studies of regional air quality and global climate change. Compared with accurate in situ observations, satellite measurements provide valuable large-scale atmospheric information. However, limitations such as clouds and retrieval assumptions result in a significant number of missing values in satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) products, which severely hampers the representativeness. To address this issue, spatial interpolation of the AOD data is necessary to improve data coverage. In this study, one year of AOD observation data from the MODIS C6.1 version was applied to analyze the spatiotemporal correlated characteristics. The statistical parameters were used as dynamic interpolation weights to develop a novel interpolation method called empirical correlation weighting (ECW) based on MODIS AOD over Northern China in 2016. The ECW interpolation results were obtained at a 0.05° resolution (~5 km). The results showed that the spatial coverage of the Deep Blue (DB) and Dark Target (DT) products increased from 43.88% to 70.65% and from 15.04% to 32.62%, respectively. The reconstruction of the ECW method illustrated good agreement with original values in three cases and in two experimental areas. The mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) in the two experiments were 0.1171 and 0.0809, and 0.1212 and 0.0838, respectively, indicating that the ECW exhibited the better accuracy than ordinary Kriging (OK) and Thin Plate Spline (TPS). The AERONET validation results indicated that the values of RMSE and MAE were slightly higher after interpolation compared with those before interpolation, maintaining relatively low values, 0.241 and 0.257, 0.140 and 0.150, respectively.
