One of the main treatment modalities for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is cisplatin-based chemotherapy. However, the acquisition of cisplatin resistance remains a major problem. Existing chemotherapy regimens are often ineffective against cancer cells expressing aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). As such, there is an urgent need for therapies targeting ALDH-positive cancer cells. The present study compares the anticancer properties of 36 structurally diverse isothiocyanates (ITCs) against NSCLC cells with the ALDH inhibitor disulfiram (DSF). Their potential affinity to ALDH isoforms and ABC proteins was assessed using AutoDockTools, allowing for selection of three compounds presenting the strongest affinity to all tested proteins. The selected ITCs had no impact on NSCLC cell viability (at tested concentrations), but significantly decreased the cisplatin tolerance of cisplatin-resistant variant of A549 (A549CisR) and advanced (stage 4) NSCLC cell line H1581. Furthermore, long-term supplementation with ITC 1-(isothiocyanatomethyl)-4-phenylbenzene reverses the EMT phenotype and migratory potential of A549CisR to the level presented by parental A549 cells, increasing E-Cadherin expression, followed by decreased expression of ABCC1 and ALDH3A1. Our data indicates that the ALDH inhibitors DSF and ITCs are potential adjuvants of cisplatin chemotherapy.
Drying various materials constitutes an essential component of several industrial processes, e.g., paper production. Typically, rotating cylinders heated internally by water steam are used for drying tape-shaped material in paper-making machines. Such an approach remains very energy-consuming, while the whole process is expensive and in conflict with the global policy of reducing energy consumption in heavy industry. One promising alternative method of drying fibrous tapes is the induction heating of drying cylinders. In this paper, we propose a drying system based on a set of inductors (electromagnetic field sources) that generate energy in the mantle of the cylinder and dry the running tape. By enabling the movement of the inductors, the system provides a high level of flexibility in terms of reacting to the varying humidity of the tape. Additionally, imaging the temperature field on the cylinder surface provides a supplementary source of information, enabling the temperature profile to be controlled. Two types of humidity control systems, a one-loop feedback control and a cascade control, were designed and analyzed. Simulation analysis and experimental verification performed using a semi-industrial setup proves that using the proposed cascade control ensures more than 30% faster response of the whole dryness control system.
Fixed, placed at regular distances inductors for induction heating of a rotating steel cylinder do not provide sufficiently uniform temperature profile along cylinder axis required by modern technologies,. The article examines the influence of inductors movement along the cylinder axis on the reduction of pick-to- pick temperature amplitude.

Various industrial technologies require flexible material webs to undergo processes such as thermal treatment (e.g., drying), printing, or laminating. Such processes are usually performed within winding systems, where the web goes through a set of rolls, and the precision of the web movement determines the quality of the final product. Therefore, high accuracy in the control of both the longitudinal and lateral movement of the web is of paramount importance. Designing the proper control system requires insightful analysis of the technological setup and precise modeling of its dynamic properties. In this paper, the transfer function model of the roll-to-roll system with closed-loop web circulation has been developed based on the mathematical description of the open-loop system. It has been proven that the analyzed system can be efficiently represented by an integral block with negligible inertia. Having established this, several control algorithms have been analyzed, and, as a result, the dedicated adaptive–predictive control algorithm has been proposed. The developed solutions have been verified both by simulations and real experiments performed using the semi-industrial laboratory setup. The high control quality of the proposed algorithm (e.g., considerable reductions in overshoot and settling time compared to PI control), outperforming classical approaches, has been confirmed under various disturbances.
