Biography

I am Full Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, Medical School, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with over 20 years of experience leading a research group focused on hypoxia biology, integrating experimental and computational approaches. I have authored 65 peer-reviewed articles (5,500+ citations) and conducted research at leading institutions, including CSIC, Hospital Universitario de la Princesa, the University of Michigan, and the University of British Columbia. My early contributions include pioneering work on Ras signaling in cancer and the crosstalk between survival pathways and apoptosis, followed by key discoveries on hypoxia-induced apoptosis and oxygen sensing. I formalized my bioinformatics training in 2005 and deepened it during a sabbatical at UBC (2011–2012), initiating a productive, ongoing collaboration. My group has developed open-source tools (TFEA.ChIP, SinglePointRNA) and continues to uncover hypoxia-regulated pathways and HIF target genes. I have supervised 10 Ph.D. theses (80% women), promoted Madrid’s first official Master’s program in Bioinformatics, and contributed to academic governance and curriculum development. I also serve on national evaluation panels and technical committees.
